<montjoie> ask orangepi ?
<montjoie> ullbeking: seems yes http://www.orangepi.org/orangepiplus2e/
<ullbeking> montjoie: it's got an 'e' on the end
<ullbeking> it's my favourite one
<ullbeking> but I want the non-e version
<ullbeking> for historical importance
<montjoie> seems unaivaillable on the web site

<mr_rcollins> So I have several CHIP computers, and I would like to set one up as a terminal server for my retro computers and my VT420 terminal. How can I add an RS232 port?
<maz> mr_rcollins: usb is probably your best bet
<maz> mr_rcollins: that's how I have 32 ports hanging off one of my A20 boxes.

<mr_rcollins> Hmmm, that would allow multiple ports instead of one using the built in UART.
<mr_rcollins> Probably with a female port too.
<mr_rcollins> Most of them on Amazon have a Prolific chip, any issues with those?
<mr_rcollins> Wow, there are four port rs232 to usb cables.
<mr_rcollins> Do I need a null modem adapter?

<DonkeyHotei> mr_rcollins: you would need to look up the wiring for the vt420
<DonkeyHotei> and the pl2303 driver for linux sucks
<mr_rcollins> That's what I thought. :-)
<mr_rcollins> I found one with an FTDI chip I'm going to try.
<mr_rcollins> It will be here Monday.
reinforce has joined #linux-sunxi
<DonkeyHotei> the ftdi driver itself is fine but the vast majority of chips are counterfeit and don't work as well
nexgen has quit [Quit: Leaving]
<mr_rcollins> That's what I'm afraid of, I guess I'll find out Monday... Crap, I have a meeting Monday night. I guess I'll find out Tuesday.

<martinayotte> Most of my USB-TTL are CH340
<DonkeyHotei> the question was about usb-rs232, not usb-ttl
<montjoie> real FTDI are 15€
<montjoie> on allwinner I found some probable real FTDI but nothing less than 6€
<montjoie> on aliexpress I mean

<Mangy_Dog> need some recommendations... I want to build a torrent box media centre with one of my spare pis... But it also needs to easily run netflix and Amazon prime video at full HD... so have the apropreate drm stuff ... Is Kodi with apps installed the only real option for me?
<Mangy_Dog> or is there anything better?
<ullbeking> Mangy_Dog: i would personally recommend an Orange Pi +2E. anybody else?
<ullbeking> i do NOT recommend using "SATA" on these SBC's
<Mangy_Dog> i was thinking a usb to sata interface
<ullbeking> use a NAS instead, especially if you have large amounts of data
<Mangy_Dog> for bulk storage
<ullbeking> Mangy_Dog: do that if you want, i personally do not recommend these USB-to-SATA interfaces
<ullbeking> get a SBC with a REAL SATA controller
<Mangy_Dog> and banana pi zero or o pi zero h5 is the optiosn right now :p
<Mangy_Dog> or a rasp betty pi 3
<Mangy_Dog> ok but what about os?
<Mangy_Dog> thats the main question really
<Mangy_Dog> is kodi the real only option?
<Mangy_Dog> and does it have netflix and amazon prime apps built for it
vagrantc has joined #linux-sunxi
<KotCzarny> android on h3 has kodi 16 and netflix
<KotCzarny> dont know about amazon apps
<KotCzarny> feel free to try and report
<KotCzarny> most likely via sideloading

<ullbeking> I also recommend H3droid
<ullbeking> But which H3 boards have real SATA?
<ullbeking> KotCzarny: ?
<ullbeking> Actually it doesn’t matter. 1 GbE Ethernet is fine.

<KotCzarny> as for sata, you should get A20/R40, only those have real sata
<KotCzarny> but 40MB/s via usb isnt bad, no?
<KotCzarny> but you have to buy recommended dongle (chipsets)
lkcl has joined #linux-sunxi
<ullbeking> personally I think that using a USB-to-SATA bridge is just wrong in principle
<aalm> ?
reinforce has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
<ullbeking> firstly, it's one more thing to go wrong or break. I think the idea of using a $10 SBC to run a NAS with important data is insane (for many reasons).
<ullbeking> also
<ullbeking> ...
<ullbeking> it has been the case that the USB-to-and-from-SATA translation has lost subtle/obscure but vital data, e.g., when testing SATA drives
<ullbeking> this has happened in enterprise applications in my example
<vagrantc> i've been running a build farm with most of the machines running with usb-sata adapters ... and they mostly work, but the disks do flake out periodically
<ullbeking> vagrantc: oh? how do they flake out?
<vagrantc> ullbeking: disk just drops out, sometimes it recovers, sometimes not
<ullbeking> ^^^ thirdly, I have low expectations on the quality of design and implementation on the kinds of devices that require a USB-to-SATA adapter rather than. simply using a straight SATA controller
<ullbeking> fourthly, vagrantc's experiences do not surprise me in the least
<ullbeking> I wouldn't even bother investigating
<ullbeking> I'm not saying the these devices are useless
<ullbeking> Just get the data from the Ethernet instead!
<ullbeking> That is what I plan to do with H3droid
<vagrantc> i have definitely wondered if these wouldn't be more stable just using remote filesystems
<ullbeking> vagrantc: remote filesystems are a known quantity
<ullbeking> much more so than flakey USB-to-SATA adapters
<vagrantc> that said, a few boards are still using usb-ethernet adapters :)
<ullbeking> such as....?
<vagrantc> i think some early-generation pine64+ boards ... the built-in ethernet had some reliability issues ... though that might be fixed or worked around in more recent tests
<vagrantc> at a "quick" glance it looks like those might be the only two left

<megi> ullbeking: my only issues with usb-sata turned out to always be power issues
<megi> so I just use seprate power for the drives, and have yet to see it fail
hlauer has joined #linux-sunxi
<megi> even on my PC, I'm more likely to run into trouble if I use front vs back USB connectors for the external USB drive
<megi> front connectors use internal cabling and are not directly connected to the board, like the back ones
<ullbeking> megi: power issues are the most of all
<ullbeking> problems cause by poor PSU's and poor wiring are the biggest cause of weird problems
<megi> yes
