i finally used Alexis's picolisp-mode today. it's nice in the doc facility (using "native" emacs rendering (shr))

but it doesn't have "electric ident" (auto indent when you press Return) and it doesn't send expressions from the source code buffer to the pil REPL (and return the answer); you have to cut-and-paste in to the REPL (buffer) so you end up switching buffers so it's not as fast as tj's.
