<cess11> can grab mp3:s of normands podcast from the rss-xml, https://feeds.transistor.fm/thoughts-on-functional-programming-podcast-by-eric-normand
<cess11> probably easy to integrate with newsboat and the podcast tooling around it
<cess11> while forth is famously low-level there's also factor, which is quite fun to play around with, kind of smalltalk but forth
<Regenaxer> yeah

<beneroth> thanks cess11
<beneroth> Regenaxer, since when is picolisp UTF-8 ?
<beneroth> (rough year?)
<Regenaxer> Started in 1999
<Regenaxer> second version
<Regenaxer> (cause it used Java applets for GUI)
<beneroth> Microsoft SQL Server is just adding it in its newest version...
<Regenaxer> oh, haha!
<beneroth> wasn't Java using UTF-16 back then?
<Regenaxer> no, 3-byte UTF-8
<Regenaxer> i.e. 16-bit chars
<beneroth> for some weird reason (I guess the crippled wide-string support in C++) much stuff from the early 2000 is all on UTF-16
<beneroth> ok
<Regenaxer> Really
<Regenaxer> ?
<beneroth> Windows
<Regenaxer> Not 16-bit "wide" chars?
<Regenaxer> yes
<Regenaxer> no utf iirc
<beneroth> no, UTF-16. Well not even exactly UTF-16 but compatible UCS-2 collation, something like that
<beneroth> I believe..might be wrong
<Regenaxer> I see
<beneroth> anyway
<Regenaxer> not important, who cares? ;)
<beneroth> lost some hours yesterday to find out that MSSQL database uses UTF-16 Little Endian and Oracle Database uses UTF-16 Big Endian for NVARCHAR database type
<beneroth> I produce hashes in SQL on both systems, to compare (data sync)
<Regenaxer> oh
<beneroth> same string gave different hash because of the Endianess difference
<beneroth> so many headaches. all no problem with pilDB.
<Regenaxer> T
<beneroth> so I would say you can rightly claim to be 20+ years ahead of the big players in the industry :P
<Regenaxer> Well, Java was back then
<beneroth> just by thinking before doing, while decision making in big companies is more talking then doing, thinking even less so
<beneroth> ok
<beneroth> good, then Java did one good thing, noted :D
<Regenaxer> yes, would say so
<Regenaxer> early Java was good for some things
<Regenaxer> like browser applets
<Regenaxer> platform independent
<Regenaxer> There it made sense
<beneroth> yeah
<Regenaxer> but never in servers
<beneroth> they copied you: runtime instead of platform-specific :P
<Regenaxer> yep
<beneroth> servers was the big background of SUN. They hoped that java would become the middle layer for all software, and to cash in big then
<beneroth> same as Oracle did with buying them, in a sense, fortunately Oracle lost
<beneroth> the compensation for alleged copyright violation they demanded from Google was suspiciously close (a bit higher) than what they payed for SUN
<beneroth> madness
<Regenaxer> :)

<olaf_h> <beneroth> said: so I would say you can rightly claim to be 20+ years ahead of the big players in the industry :P
<Regenaxer> Too big a word ;)
<olaf_h> this is T for a lot more topics, Regenaxer realized!
<olaf_h> I do not have a list, but the smooth integration of http/html gui was years ahead of industry
<Regenaxer> hmm, not sure, I never paid much attention
<olaf_h> what they now do with javascript and did before with rich clients or so, that all was included in picolisp
<beneroth> Regenaxer, good you didn't paid attention. others do, get confused and then follow fashion instead of science and clear thinking
<Regenaxer> ok :)
<olaf_h> example css3 grid-template-areas attribute - picolisp had this (not 100% the same, but the idea of) since ever (not really, but as long as I know picolisp, i think)
<Regenaxer> oh, I don't know well, it is by Jon Kleiser
<Regenaxer> @lib.css, right?
<olaf_h> picolisp <grid> had a rather similar idea of making it easier to place content in a predefined layout
<Regenaxer> Jon did some improvemenys back then
<Regenaxer> ok, yes, <grid> etc. is my stuff
<olaf_h> my words were wrong .... the Absicht of the mentioned css3 attribute is the same, which you realized in picolisp years ago (or decades ago, perhaps)
<Regenaxer> I see
<olaf_h> and putting all stuff only in memory - you did this since .... when .... ? 1980's ? When 640K were the memory size of a dos pc?
<olaf_h> what vision!
<olaf_h> what vision you had!
<Regenaxer> You mean the DB? This started in the late 1990s
<olaf_h> yes, may be
<olaf_h> so far my 'good words for today' :-) - i have to go out now. enjoy your day
<Regenaxer> thanks Olaf!
<Regenaxer> See you :)
<olaf_h> sure
<Regenaxer> I will go too
