Hey razzy :)
<Regenaxer>
razzy is not very responsive ;)
<Regenaxer>
hi beneroth!
<beneroth>
Hi Regenaxer :)
<Regenaxer>
Some people ask something and then drop off, so you never know if your invested time was in vainor not
<beneroth>
yeah that is bloody rude
<Regenaxer>
true, but common unfortunately
<beneroth>
they probably were not socialized in IRC of 20+ years ago
<Regenaxer>
looks like
<beneroth>
or I just lived in a even smaller bubble then I thought :)
<Regenaxer>
:)
<beneroth>
I find respect for others livetime is one of the core social hacker valuer
<Regenaxer>
yes, for all kinds of communication, not just IRC
<beneroth>
most of our standards are open (RFC), many books are free & open, and most top-shots of our profession are available for email or nice chat (if one doesn't waste their lifetime)
<beneroth>
thats very different to most other fields
<Regenaxer>
yep
<razzy>
Hi beneroth. Regenaxer I subscribed :] . I value time of others :]
<Regenaxer>
Perfect! :)
<Regenaxer>
I thought it is you who subscribed
<beneroth>
pilCon is 1800 CET?
<Regenaxer>
Yes
<beneroth>
hey razzy :) welcome back to the ML
<razzy>
ML machine life?
<beneroth>
mailing list
<beneroth>
you right, in common usage its machine learning
<beneroth>
overused abbreviations
<beneroth>
Regenaxer, I just realized my problems with math is that they primarily use your coding style :D too many single-char variables always meaning something different :P
<Regenaxer>
hehe, that's true :)
<beneroth>
your style is better, sometimes you spend more chars :D
<Regenaxer>
Though I usually try to keep some consistency
<beneroth>
T, absolutely
<Regenaxer>
Naming is a big task
<beneroth>
one of the top 3 problems
<beneroth>
hm.. estimation should be taken into that list
<Regenaxer>
besides one-off
<beneroth>
T
<Regenaxer>
off-by-one to be exact
<Regenaxer>
You mean estimation of memory and time usage?
<beneroth>
no, project estimations
<beneroth>
well ok, not an IT problem to be exact
<Regenaxer>
yes, I think it is impossible
<beneroth>
it is

Oops, seems there is a bug in 'till'
<razzy>
bug or feature?
<Regenaxer>
Bug
<Regenaxer>
does not correctly read UTF-8
<Regenaxer>
Fixed now
<Regenaxer>
Released
<tankf33der>
All passed.
<Regenaxer>
Thanks!
<Regenaxer>
The bug shows if (till <c> NIL) reads an UTF-8 in between
<Regenaxer>
then only the first byte of UTF-8 chars is listed
<Regenaxer>
(or: was)

Regarding abbreviations overuse, I guess that the surge in machine learning popularity made finding jobs requiring knowledge of ML (the programming language) harder.
<f8l>
By the way, if treating IRC as an asynchronous means of communication is considered undesirable here, please let me know.
<Regenaxer>
Asynchronous is fine, we all do
<Regenaxer>
No matter if an answer appears later (just it should appear at all)

I'm still hearing Eric Normand's postcast from time to time. He talks about Alan Kay and whatnot. And most of the time I feel that PicoLisp got it all right :)
<Regenaxer>
Fexprs, inheritance, late binding

I recently heard the one about stratified design, that was excellent. and nicely explained (I find him a bit slow, but I guess that is fully on purpose and meaningful)
<Regenaxer>
yeah, ok I think
brd has joined #picolisp
<beneroth>
stratified design is exactly what big complex systems require to become maintainable (in my view). And Lisp is the best for that because of the DSL/code-is-data feature.
<Regenaxer>
Today I heard the long one about history of Smalltalk
<beneroth>
link?
<Regenaxer>
Shortly after the stratified one
<beneroth>
did you find a way to download btw? I've always trouble with the non-youtube podcast just stopping without any reason (and resetting), and the youtube one has all the youtube-problems of course...
<beneroth>
ok
<beneroth>
I find it interesting that his reading of software papers shows (as many other sources, if one looks) that basically Software as a field is mostly stagnating, and (as often said) Academia is (was since 60s) decades ahead of industry practice
<Regenaxer>
I use AntennaPod
<beneroth>
I use VLC. I want to use download + filebrowser + vlc.
