sigrok/pulseview's protocol decoders (which can be written in Python) are a really nice feature. however, they have serious performance issues with time bases in simulations. moreover, they can only handle single bit signals. if you need to deal with serial interfaces, you might like it. the second reference I provided is precisely about downsampling VCD waveforms generated with GHDL.
