<implr> so if anyone else is having problems with xilinx's 2020 installer on linux
<implr> the solution is
<implr> # cat /etc/redhat-release
<implr> CentOS Linux release 7.6.2003 (Core)
<implr> (create that file with those exact contents)

<Hoernchen> that's it? and then the gui works?
<kc8apf> not surprising. Shipping commercial software on Linux is hard so vendors want to limit their testing and support matrix. If they allow you to install on unsupported OSes, someone will ask for support on it and waste a lot of their time.
<nats`> no no no.. xilinx just sucks with linux
<nats`> they have an outrageous backlog of bugs
<nats`> but they also sucks with java, they manage to make unworking java code :[
<nats`> it's a nightmare recently I had to work with quartus.... it was like discovering paradise
<nats`> it's ugly but at least I didn't trigger any weird bug and everything was working like expected on an "unsupported" distribution
<nats`> but they also sucks for windows support recently they added a new support for ISE and in fact it's a VM with a linux and ISE installed. There is a work around with just renaming DLL to have ISE working natively under windows...
<implr> so the issue is
<implr> that they otherwise pop up the 'your os is incompatible' dialog
<implr> and that dialog, and that dialog only, is broken
<implr> some java gui deadlock bullshit
<nats`> -_-
<implr> so if you fake being a centos the dialog does not appear and the installer runs normally
<Hoernchen> lol
<nats`> typical xilinx :D
<nats`> do you have multi screen ?
<implr> not on this laptop
<implr> vivado itself does run on multiple screens though
<implr> before i discovered this hack i installed 2020 on my desktop with the batch installer
<nats`> oky asking because some version of recent vivado can install/runs on multi screen correctly
<implr> (which has no gui therefore also just works)
<nats`> because some dialog have a null pointer exception when multi screen is detected
<implr> oh, fun
<implr> haven't encountered that
<nats`> what I encountered while working on a zynq project :D
<nats`> The answer I made to myself sum up 3 super fun bug :D
<nats`> super fun is you like to loose 1 week when you don't have the answer on forum

<implr> ah for bitbake i tend to use more of the upstream yocto stuff
<implr> + meta-xilinx[-tools] from xilinx
<etrig> implr: does that work 100% now? their "osl" flow always seemed to be broken for me
<implr> for the kernel I still do linux-xlnx
<implr> and fsbl/uboot/etc
