<Noxz> I'm buying a Grade A 24x36x4" granite surface plate + stand tomorrow
<mrdata_> nice
<Noxz> super excited about it, actually
<Noxz> from a proper tool & die mfgr - so well maintained and they have others and want to reclaim some space, hence selling it
<Noxz> not some garage tinkerer thast has dings and whatnot
<mrdata_> my counter top is fake granite
<mrdata_> laminate
<Noxz> how flat is it? :P
<mrdata_> it bubbled in a couple places
<Noxz> doh
<mrdata_> but hey, i am a tenant
<mrdata_> it isnt my doing
<Noxz> yeah, this is my first house to own.. but my art studio was basically fair game
<Noxz> I mean, renting at my previous place didnt stop me from building a chemistry fume hood in my living room ducted to a window..
<Noxz> even spilled acids/bases on the floor a bit - they had to replace it upon moving out
<mrdata_> yeah, i did similar in the bathroom at my previous place
<mrdata_> and they renovated it too when i left
<mrdata_> funny thing tho, i didnt get blamed
<Noxz> they repainted it to a lighter color when I left
<Noxz> it was a depressing dark green
<mrdata_> the owner was just tired of the look
<Noxz> they replaced the windows and roof (I was in a converted attic) while I was there
<Noxz> I am essentialy completely unsatisfied with the lathes available, both watchmakers (historically tiny) and larger ones
<Noxz> and I will need to verify flatness etc
<Noxz> also build precision jogs and whatnot
<Noxz> i'll be a good buy

<sync> Noxz: dings are completely fine with granite tho
<sync> wear is still an issue
<sync> I don't buy granite used anymore, it's just so cheap

<SpeedEvil> used can be a problem shipping-wise. Just go along with a small group of 30 friends, and all grab a corner.

<Noxz> sync, what sizes do you have?
<Noxz> and what do you typically use them for? for me, it will likely be more for machining & verifying tolerances
<john_cephalopoda> MEMS-related article: https://ifixit.org/blog/11986/iphones-are-allergic-to-helium/
<sync> Noxz: mostly scraping
<sync> I have a small 300x400 one, a 1500x1000mm one and a 2000x3000mm one although the latter one is missing a corner
<sync> the latter ones I bought used but I measured them before I bought them

<Noxz> got my stone + stand
<Noxz> was only 3" but went with it anywho, for my needs
<Noxz> also, a 1/2/3 block slipped off an indicator stand as he was clearing it and put two dings in it - right in front of us!
<Noxz> doh!
<Noxz> he made up for it by giving me an indicator stand kit that he is making
<Noxz> says when all said and done one of those indicators would likely sell for 1k - so I feel like I got a decent deal
<Noxz> I need more tools to complete it though
<Noxz> but it's a start!
<Noxz> his shop was very cool
<Noxz> no pics - he's against cell phones

<john_cephalopoda> Noxz: You should have taken a Polaroid camera with you ;þ
<Noxz> it was impressive.. two bridgeports, 2 cncs, two EDMs
<Noxz> not sure what brand the lathe was because it said "Cadilac" instead :P
<Noxz> a couple old ford trucks he was working on
<Noxz> but, also, HUGE die presses
<john_cephalopoda> Night

<sync> indicators used are virtually worthless in my experience
<sync> at least buying them, it seems like that
<Noxz> just the stand, not the indicator themselves
<Noxz> he has kits for indicators that he plans to sell as retirement later on
<Noxz> not sure what is so special about his just yet, but yeah
