has anyone here used ipfs-js-api object.get? I'm trying it on a html file added to ifps (ipfs cat works fine) but when getting it with object.get it contains a bunch of leading and trailing unicode chars, i.e \b\u0002\u0012\u0005

the result.Data property, that is

holodisc: object.get is that, getting the object. What you are looking is for ipfs.get (or ipfs.files.get), which unfortunately is not implemented in the js-ipfs-api client library /cc voxelot

voxelot: right, but how's the Data property encoded in that node?
<holodisc>
voxelot: trying to get clues from object.spec.js but i think that part of the equation is mocked out

hi guys, speaking of js-ipfs-api, does it support /api/v0/add with multipart encoding via add(arrayOrBufferOrStream, [callback]), or am i looking at wrong place?
<lidel>
will look into it. i would like to outsource all API interactions to js-ipfs-api, but to use it in firefox i need to browserify it and it may be tricky as firefox does not provide native implementation for all parts of commonjs, eg. there is buffer, but os module is missing
<lidel>
probably will end up with partially native, partially shimmed commonjs setup
<jedahan>
and like, my hope is to help out, by implementing whatever IPC-ish thing a webserverworker would be talking to the main function
<jedahan>
so if it is creating webrtc channels for messaging or whatever, :D

yeah i feel like I am occasionally running in circles, with the idea of 'run ipfs as a system-wide daemon, and interact with that from the browser', vs 'visit this webpage, it will download an offline-first application, and if you hit save in that application, it will post the data back to the network, and run an ipfs daemon within //the tab// you have open'
<jedahan>
there is some bootstrapping confusion
<brand0>
have you checked out js-ipfs?
<brand0>
i think that's what you want to be looking at, as that will eventually be able to use webrtc to directly connect to other peers
<voxelot>
i'm still wrapping up the http-server part that will connect to the daemons, but should finish today
<voxelot>
next weekish we should have things ready for you
<jedahan>
which would be super cool - when you save something, the blob is client-side encrypted. but the urls are shareable because the fragment is the encryption key
<jedahan>
voxelot awesome!
<jedahan>
voxelot thats where my understanding gets real hazy... you mean running an ipfs http server in the browser tab?
<voxelot>
jedahan: correct: to my understanding libp2p is getting close to being able to connect js-ipfs to go-ipfs via websockets, an intermediate hybrid step otw to webrtc connection
<voxelot>
after finishing the node js-ipfs http-api today im proabably going to shift over toward libp2p and see how thats going
<voxelot>
everything that doesnt end in node is what we having running in the browser currently, still a bit of work to be done getting libp2p in there
<jedahan>
hmm, I think i will need to read about ipfs api - objects, blocks, merkle-dag, etc to understand what abstractions these all actually mean
<jedahan>
also, these magic 'buffer!./' things that seems like a webpack feature
<voxelot>
jedahan: haha i like how you use magic, sometimes the webpack things we do in js-ipfs feel very hand wavy, but yes we use a lot of loaders and shims to get the job done
<voxelot>
understanding all of that is my week point, but looking into the objects and how the dag service works will give you an idea of the lower level modules that handle commands in my files PR

do you know if there is a roadmap for webrtc or a PR or anything like that?
malverde has joined #ipfs
<malverde>
If I put a text file on ipfs and turn off my computer can I access that text file? Or do I need to be hosting it? I guess I'm asking are files replicated across the p2p network? Or only replicated when a second person does a "get"
<voxelot>
brand0: you can follow daviddias' captains log for all things js-ipfs, not sure if there is a specific libp2p/webrtc roadmap
<malverde>
I was wondering if I could use it for service discovery for p2p networks instead of having to rely on trusted centralized seeds
<r0kk3rz>
malverde: sure, using the findprovs function you can find clients that have a certain hash
<malverde>
Thanks, I will look into that
<r0kk3rz>
malverde: ipfs dht findprovs <hash>
<malverde>
And right now you can ask peers for what files they have? So its possible to enumerate through the peers and see all the files accessible on the network? Has a search been built?

no idea, conceptually it might be possible, but you would have to rely upon metadata to be stored in IPFS
