<Kartha> hi
<Munsy> hi
<Kartha> what is up, Munsy :D
<Munsy> just chillin, bout to fork this baby and start playing with it
<Munsy> wew
<Kartha> it's been pretty non-hyped for a year or so now
<Kartha> this was supposed to be the future of the internet
<Munsy> rip
<Kartha> well, it's not dead yet
<Munsy> hmm maybe i should read over some issues and try to do something with it instead of just playing

<postables[m]> Kartha: personally anything i've seen be super hyped since 2017, particularly relating to "decentralzed X" has ended up being a pile of shit
<postables[m]> IPFS is probably the only project I've discovered through the hype of the ICO rush that I'm comfortable hedging my bets against it becoming something the world uses
<Munsy> yeah whyrusleeping got me looking at it in college and i keep coming back to check on it
<postables[m]> i'd even give ethereum+bitcoin a higher chance of becoming nothing before IPFS becomes nothing. Regardless of whether or not IPFS actually "becomes the new internet" i think there's a ton of functionality that's applicable to a wide variety of situations which doesn't neccessarily require it becoming "the new internet"
<Munsy> tru dat
<Munsy> i was watching a video (probably shared here multiple times so i'll spare you) that showed how it could be used to connect earth to mars and i was like "oooooh that's shiny"
<Munsy> or rather just make file transfers a little less time consuming
<postables[m]> that talk that juan benet gave? yea that shit blew my mind the first time i saw it, pretty sure that was the video that got me hooked on ipfs
<Kartha> postables[m], Munsy : are there any popular projects using ipfs now?
<postables[m]> depends what you define as popular, the most well known one is probably openbazzar
<Munsy> i think cloudflare is hosting a node now
<Munsy> if that counts
<postables[m]> opera supports IPNS+ENS
<Kartha> these are interesting

<fooock> hello
<fooock> I have a question, I'm developing the service https://ipfs.fooock.com/ and I need to check the writeable status of gateways
<fooock> now I check if I can post a file to the api add method
<fooock> but the correct check should be post to /ipfs/ path
<fooock> Currently the infura ipfs gateway is shown as writeable, because I can post a file to the api, but if I execute this request, curl -v -X POST https://ipfs.infura.io/ipfs/, it returns a 405 error
<fooock> what I'm missing??
markg85 has joined #ipfs
<kmal> fooock: Not sure quite yet what the answer is (still researching :), but quick note: In the docs, looks like they include the port number ("https://ipfs.infura.io:5001/api/v0/...etc") Not sure if that helps, but I'll keep looking.
<D_> POSTing to gateway and using the api are two different things, though
recursive has quit [Ping timeout: 250 seconds]
recursive has joined #ipfs
<kmal> Hmm.. That's true.
<D_> infura seems to do a thing where they whitelist some api paths
cp- has joined #ipfs
kyan has joined #ipfs
<fooock> kmal: yes now I'm using the api, but I only want to post to the ipfs path to check if node is writeable
cp- has quit [Client Quit]
<fooock> but with infura post don't works, but gateway is writeable
<D_> The whole idea behind enabling posting to gateway is that you don't expose your API
<D_> infura does a funny thing where they expose some of their api paths to the internet
<D_> I assume they have a reverse proxy that blocks stuff like /api/v0/pin/ls
<D_> I don't think any other gateway exposes their API at all
kyan has quit [Ping timeout: 246 seconds]
cp- has joined #ipfs
<fooock> yeah, but then there isn't a standard method to check writable statuses? Other solution is make the two requests... (api add method and gateway post)
xcm has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
xcm has joined #ipfs
mowcat has joined #ipfs
<D_> They're two different settings, essentially 🤷
<D_> I think posts being accepted to gateway is the standard definition of "writeable" gateway

<Asuska[m]> Hey can everyone please check their IPFS peer counts. I am noticing a large connection of peers (over 15,000) on 2 of my IPFS nodes. I am not sure the cause, either a bug in peer connection management or a deliberate attack on the network.
<Asuska[m]> IPFS uses a few GB of ram.
<Voker57> got 4059 with connmgr set to 600/1200
<Voker57> > IPFS uses a few GB of ram.
<Voker57> that's normal for IPFS :)
<Voker57> but mine only uses 500m
<Asuska[m]> Not exactly normal in this case.
<Asuska[m]> Considering connection was up to 15k peers
<graylan[m]> It must be some bug because i've had two ipfs node operators come to me with errors, from the ram maxing out, they have been running ipfs for months with no problems.
<graylan[m]> i actually had them just turn off IPFS. so that's great lol.
