<Encrypt> Hello guys!
<Encrypt> I've noticed that I am using an old version of LibreElec on my Raspberry Pi 3 B+
<Encrypt> I'm confused though: I believed that Libreelec periodically checked for updates in the background, but apparently it doesn't?

<mack-> Encrypt: you have to select the main version channel in the settings for updates. If you're in the version 8 channel, it will only update to 8.2.5 until you choose version 9 channel for updates.
<Encrypt> Hmmmmm... let me check
<Encrypt> Right now it's set to "auto"
<mack-> auto = the behavior I described.
<Encrypt> Alright
<Encrypt> My current version is 8.2.5, indeed
<mack-> Since major version updates change the backend database and many addons need to be updated between major updates, major versions are not auto-updated.

<mack-> There's nothing wrong with being on 8.2.5 :) If everything works, and you don't need any of the changes in 9.....
<Encrypt> mack-, Well, I guess it has new features and nice stuff? :)
<Encrypt> Also, there is something wrong with pictures playback currently, I had disabled the fading effect and changed time between images in the slideshow but it had no effect it seems
<Encrypt> And Kodi sometimes crashes / the system sometimes hangs
<Encrypt> That's why I'm considering upgrading...
<mack-> as always, read the release notes for upgrades to decide if the time is right for you, and if you do decide to proceed, make and test a backup first.
<mack-> upgrading a malfunctioning install of any software is always risky. So that backup must be done.
<mack-> 8.2.5 on my Pi2B is rock solid, including slideshow with various settings you mention, so something is wrong with your setup. (Could be something as simple as failing SD card, since you mention random crashes)
<mack-> LibreElec is also very easy to get back to a working state from a fresh install for most people, assuming they've got their media filenames correct and/or NFO files.
<Encrypt> Weirdly, version 8.2.5 is in "LibreELEC legacy (not for RPIB+)"
<Encrypt> RPI3+*

<Encrypt> mack-, Update done, it didn't solve my picture playback problem though... (<_<)
