I just installed libreelec for the first time on my Intel J199-based HTPC, the installation went fine and I was suprices how fast and easy it was to intall. but the thing is I can't really play anything on it, the buffer runs out in about 10 second or so.
<anonymip>
previously I've been running Kodi under Windows 10 on the same hardware, and I've never had this issue when playig back videos
<anonymip>
any ideas where to start looking?

I read somwere the Realtek NIC driver are not very good on libreelec, maybe that's the issue?
<oblikoamorale>
nah, realtek kernel driver issues were fixed a long time ago, and it works just fine
<oblikoamorale>
enable debug logging and look at kodi log at playback stop moment, perhaps you'll learn something to go on from

to me it feels like network performance is worse on libreelec than on windows 10. but I don't know, it might be someting totally different.

I have a few boxes with realtek nics, some of them running 24/7 with no apparent networking problems
<oblikoamorale>
make sure your physical networking media is ok, check cabling, connectors etc
<oblikoamorale>
ah, and check dmesg for network related messages too
<anonymip>
the network is the same as when I ran on Windows 10, which I did yesterday
hijacker has joined #libreelec

I'm not currently at home, but I see now when it scans my music source, it does that at about 60-65mbit/s, so the network seems to be doing alright
<oblikoamorale>
I was hoping to see network related kernel error messages in noticeable quantities there. did you reboot the box after encountering playback stops, or it's the same run?
<anonymip>
it's not rebooted since the playback issues
<anonymip>
what I was noticing when trying to play some movies yesterday evening was that it took about 5 seconds of buffering for the video to start paying, and then when it starts I klick "o" to get the playback information I could see the buffer drop from 100% to 0% in about 5 seconds, just like if the network connection couldn't keep up.
<anonymip>
and that was video files stored on my unraid server over gigabit LAN, previously on my windows installatoin I have only seen this happend occationally when playing video over remote VPN connections

hmm, I think my issue is gone, all I did was deleting the DHCP reservation in pfSense for the libreelec machine, and and assing it another IP-address. now the buffering seems to be gone. strange...
<anonymip>
and btw, is there some way to time how long library updates take, except sitting on the couch with a stop watch staring at the screen?
<pragmaticenigma>
anonymip: Accidentally configure a different machine with a static IP? maybe an old machien you pulled out of storage and forgot how it was configured?
<pragmaticenigma>
anonymip: if the debugger is on, I think the entries in there are time stamped and there should be entries for when an action starts and stops
<pragmaticenigma>
anonymip: why are you timing it though?
<anonymip>
nope, no other machine on the network with same IP, the same machine have had this IP for ages while running windows
<anonymip>
well, I'm just curious about how long it takes, it feels like it goes alot faster on libreelec than on windows though
<pragmaticenigma>
depends on how much it needs to fetch and from where though. TheTVDB or TheMovieDB sites are most commonly used and depending on server load at the time could take longer or shorter to complete
<pragmaticenigma>
The windows and libreelec/linux versions of kodi use the exact same python plugin to fetch that data
<anonymip>
ok, I see
<anonymip>
and also, do you know how the scan of different sources in handled, are the sources scanned in alphabetical order?
<anonymip>
or do the run in the order they get added?
<pragmaticenigma>
anonymip: I don't know if there is a defined order. I haven't looked at the source code. However, I could make an educated guess that the plugin would use Python's os.walk() function. Which would sort things based on the binary value of the characters that make up a file and/or directory name.
<pragmaticenigma>
In Ascii and example: 'B' would come before 'a'
<pragmaticenigma>
that has more to do with how the OS's interfaces provide that information to Python
<anonymip>
that would be a nice feature for the "Library auto updater", thet you could select in what order different sources should be scanned.
<anonymip>
I have named my sources with leading numbers asuming they would run in that order
<pragmaticenigma>
I don't see why it would matter
<pragmaticenigma>
forcing something like that to perform in a specific way as you describe would slow down the process and make it take longer
<pragmaticenigma>
because you would first have to generate the list of items to be scanned, then sort it, then process it. Instead of processing each element as you encounter it
<anonymip>
for me I have sources for movies, tv shows and music on my NAS located in my LAN which I would like to be scanned first, then I have several remote sources via IPSec tunnels
<anonymip>
and when I think about it it would also be nice if there could be different schedules for the different sources
<pragmaticenigma>
anonymip: All of that would add execution time to scanning your media. Another educated guess is sources are scanned in the order they were added. So you might want to check the sources configuration xml in userdata and see how they're ordered in there

any idea what v8d is? when I look at "top" it seems to constanly be using 100% CPU, looks like this: https://pastebin.com/raw/Gsc2HrhE
<pragmaticenigma>
It might be this? https://github.com/gittup/v86d ... which appears to be a tool for providing support for kernel drivers requiring x86 support
<anonymip>
oh, it's v86d
<anonymip>
ok, I don't remember seeing that earlier when I checked top, maybe that has something to do with the buffering I was seeing?
<pragmaticenigma>
possible... but I don't know why that would be needed with libreelec
<anonymip>
and about libreelec version, it's LibreELEC-Generic.x86_64-9.2.2

probably best to postpone it to when library finishes updating :)
<anonymip>
Do you think I have to reboot in between addon removal?
<anonymip>
The extended info script I don't even know what it is, but the library auto update I would like to keep
lacrimosa has joined #libreelec
<pragmaticenigma>
anonymip: I'm not suggesting you permanently remove these... I'm just trying to help narrow down what might the culprit
<pragmaticenigma>
and it might not hurt to reboot between removals. I don't now the plugin system of kodi very well. I don't know if a plugin that has a dependency on another will remove the dependency plugin if the other is removed
<pragmaticenigma>
You could also try going throught he add-repository browser and see if the v86d is listed somewhere in there on it's own and try removing it and see what breaks
Gittun has quit [Disconnected by services]
Gittun has joined #libreelec
<anonymip>
Yeah, Good ideal. And I think all depencies are listed for each addon, so maybe I'll spot v86d there
lacrimosa has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!]
<buzzmarshall>
normally if your using kodi's built in tools it won't remove a dependancy if some other plugin is using it
Gittun has quit [Disconnected by services]
<buzzmarshall>
as long as it's marked being used by something it should show you whats using it and not allow you to remove it till all those instances are removed
Gittun has joined #libreelec
<buzzmarshall>
if your trying to get something specific out you'll probably have to do it manually and then make sure to go into the packages directory inside the plugins directory and remove the zip package of that program as well
<buzzmarshall>
that way if you try and reinstall it that will ensure it goes and gets the new zip source file rather then reinstall the existing package already on the device
<anonymip>
I simply disable (from the web interface) all three suggested plugins, and now v86d is gone. Now I'll try to activate auto updater gain
