hi. I'm currently trying to build u-boot and a mainline kernel for a20-olinuxino-lime. I realized, that the dts files apply gmacs instead of emacs by mistake and wrote some patches to fix this. though I achieve link detection now, I still got some trouble, to get a working connection.
<stephan_>
u-boot now states "Net: eth0: ethernet@01c0b000" and the kernel log shows "[ 0.879259] sun4i-emac 1c0b000.ethernet: eth0: at e08a6000, IRQ 26 MAC: 02:19:03:82:a2:4c [ 5.886089] sun4i-emac 1c0b000.ethernet eth0: Link is Up - 100Mbps/Full - flow control rx/tx"
<stephan_>
still I can't ping in any direction (of course with valid ips :)). do you have any idea, what to try?
<stephan_>
of course I'm happy to provide my patches :)
<stephan_>
and the fex file also only has the emac, not the gmac enabled
<mripard>
stephan_: yeah, and the GMAC is able to deal with that just fine
<mripard>
you'll have a 100M link
<mripard>
but you can still use the GMAC
<stephan_>
ok, I'll have a look, if I get it that way... thank you :)
<stephan_>
but I guess, then I will have to apply the gmac in the fex file...
<stephan_>
I'll try it :)

stephen_: lime works with default settings uboot 2015.07 / kernel 4.3.2
<Igorpec8>
4.2.3
<stephan_>
thank you Igorpec8
<Igorpec8>
stephan_: eth0: PHY ID 00008201 at 1 IRQ POLL (stmmac-0:01) active
<Igorpec8>
everything is normal
<stephan_>
I get that message too, still I can't communicate over that ethernet port... but I'll try 4.2.3 - possibly that'll fix it
<Igorpec8>
aha, strange

<Igorpec8>
i have deb packages for kernel and uboot if you want to try?
<Igorpec8>
you have bad connection or no connection?
<stephan_>
none. not a single ping passes.
<stephan_>
thank you, I think I'll try it with a different kernel config first
<stephan_>
ok - I had to unload the module and reload it after loading rtc - as described in your link. it works now :)
<Igorpec8>
sorry that I hadn't remember this earlier ;(
<Igorpec8>
good
<stephan_>
no, no, I'm glad, thank you :) I would have searched forever :)

Igorpec8: is it a kernel bug, or a userspace one ?
tomboy64 has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]
<stephan_>
I would suspect it to be a kernel bug... the actual time should not influence the function of the kernel module... I'll have a look at the module
<Igorpec8>
kernel bug which is actually not a bug ;)
<Igorpec8>
rtc drivers are different. read the issue, we explored as far as we could

the image debian kernel 4.2 or 4.3 for orangepi
<William__>
i need it
<TheLinuxBug>
thats nice?

go find one
<TheLinuxBug>
or, build it your self

<TheLinuxBug>
did you even search on google before you came here?
<TheLinuxBug>
I was able to find several within 30 seconds of searching
<TheLinuxBug>
and I would see what is happening in Uboot when the machine starts
<TheLinuxBug>
something is failing
<TheLinuxBug>
without knowing what
<TheLinuxBug>
kinda hard to tell you what to do next
<William__>
it no boot
<TheLinuxBug>
your not listening to what I am telling you
<TheLinuxBug>
You need a Uart cable
<TheLinuxBug>
which is SERIAL
<TheLinuxBug>
to see what is on the screen when Uboot initially loads
<William__>
96136
<TheLinuxBug>
the HDMI won't start until it engages the kernel
<TheLinuxBug>
the failure obviously comes before it loads kernel
<TheLinuxBug>
so you get blank screen
<William__>
oh
<TheLinuxBug>
Using serial UART cable
<William__>
:(
<TheLinuxBug>
you can see what happens before that in a terminal application
<William__>
can you show for me link ebay Uart cable orangepi

not sure William

I got mine with my Cubieboard
<TheLinuxBug>
im sure there are other who sell it
<TheLinuxBug>
William__: which orangepi do you have?
<TheLinuxBug>
the A20 or the H3?
<William__>
h3
<TheLinuxBug>
You may be trying images for the A20 on the H3
<TheLinuxBug>
and that will not work
<TheLinuxBug>
they are different chips and have different uboot support
<William__>
yup
<TheLinuxBug>
that may be part of your issue
<TheLinuxBug>
the main orangepi is A20
<TheLinuxBug>
and it is the one you will find most supported
<William__>
right
<TheLinuxBug>
as Cubieboard, BananaPi, etc
<TheLinuxBug>
are built with A20
<TheLinuxBug>
I think also Igor's images are for the A20
<TheLinuxBug>
not the H3
<TheLinuxBug>
this is why you do not have it boot
<TheLinuxBug>
it is possible there is not yet kernel 4.2 for H3
<William__>
really?
<William__>
no 4.2 for H#
<William__>
omg 3 day of me
<TheLinuxBug>
Well issue is
<William__>
:(
<TheLinuxBug>
H3 requires different libraries and such to work right
<TheLinuxBug>
and as orangPi I believe are only ones really working with H3
staplr has joined #linux-sunxi
<TheLinuxBug>
dunno wtf that was
<TheLinuxBug>
Most documentation I find seems to be for Original OrangePi with A20
<TheLinuxBug>
Though i see one major problem: the kernel
<TheLinuxBug>
They use 3.4 which is too old for systemd. Their U-Boot (from 2011) should be able to boot a more recent kernel but you still need to build one. The CPU itself is supported since 4.2 [1] but there is currently no device tree file for any H3 board (also i have no idea if there are drivers for the rest of the SOC/board)
<William__>
right
<William__>
3.4 too old
<TheLinuxBug>
well issue is they didn't release devicetree file
<TheLinuxBug>
so hard to make a mainline system without having that
<TheLinuxBug>
Basically either OrangePi would have to make device tree file
<TheLinuxBug>
and would need to research if other drivers work for it

Some Orange Pi boards have been
<TheLinuxBug>
added to Linux 4.2, but I think these are the Allwinner A20 based only. I have not seen work done on Allwinner H3 specifically, but it’s a sun8i platform like A23 so maybe it might boot too.
<TheLinuxBug>
You may want to ask on #linux-sunxi IRC channel to check mainline status.
