TheLinuxBug: I think transfer speed is not related serial port from Allwinner Board side. However, as you might be using USB to serial converter to talk to Board while using FEL mode
<vishnup>
from PC side USB-to-Serial communication and the USB bulk transfers used for FEL are related.

I'd faced similar issues when I connect USB-ro-serial converters, keyboard inputs become very slow. and this time I was using BeagleBoardBlack

"The ‘problem’ with the H3 is that it’s being marketed as “up to 1.6 GHz” but that’s just marketing bullsh*t suitable to provide higher Antutu scores. When you do benchmarking for your tablet’s press release you also switch off the ‘thermal controls’ contained in Allwinner’s 3.4 kernel: Normally the CPU cores are being shut down one after the other. To work with this chip in a realiable way you simply don’t exceed a core voltage of 1.2V which translate

or we could wait until someone gets one, and check the chip specs directly

vishnup: thx for your comments. in fact i'm using two usb connections from the pc side, one for sunxi-fel to the usb-otg of the a20 (bpi), and the other for a usb-serial connection (pl2303)
<NiteHawk>
the really weird thing is that i'm observing slower transfers (~570kB/s) with the otg connection *alone*, and only after i run minicom on the serial it get's a boost up to ~950kB/s
<NiteHawk>
with the serial not really doing anything (expect showing output from the u-boot SPL of course)
<NiteHawk>
in my experiments it was sufficient to exit minicom on the PC side to lower the FEL transfer speed again...
<NiteHawk>
(i haven't actually tried that while FEL uploads were in progress, that might be another interesting experiment)

rellla: is there a wip driver for g2d?
<wens>
though g2d should be fairly simple. it's just a mem2mem v4l2 device, no complex binding
<rellla>
not yet. i thought about adding the dt bits.
<rellla>
then look into how such a mem2mem v4l2 device functions
<wens>
normally you add the dt bindings with the driver
ricardocrudo has joined #linux-sunxi
<wens>
otherwise you might get stuck with a bad binding :p
<rellla>
yes, with the driver. i looked into samsungs g2d driver and think this would be some good basics ...

@rella, may i ask about a clarification of on the G2D HW module. is that enabling mainly HW bit-blitting?
<sunxi_fan>
is that good also for the plain "framebufffer" /dev/fbX API acceleration?

i mean the what's included in .../linux/fb.h like these ioctl calls:

<sunxi_fan>
@rella: so, application-wise, an app needs to call these ioctls for leveraging this engine. right? are there already "test apps" exercising the G2D "3.4 legacy" driver?
<sunxi_fan>
then i suppose, at a later time, some "glue logic" should be able to wrap the framebuffer ioctls on top of the ones from G2D. right?
<sunxi_fan>
i'm not too "in the know" about this stuff so i'd like to understand ..
<sunxi_fan>
it looks like a powerful enhancement of sunxi mainline graphic display performance!
<rellla>
sunxi_fan: libvdpau-sunxi uses it
reinforce has joined #linux-sunxi
<rellla>
and afaik xf86-video-fbturbo also uses g2d, but there i don't know the details.
<rellla>
sunxi_fan: don't spend too much time in glue'ing anything, but go forward supporting g2d in mainline :p
philippe_fouquet has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<sunxi_fan>
yeah, i'd like to play with G2D on mainline indeed :-) ..
<sunxi_fan>
but, on one hand i'm a bit short on time (or better i have too many tasks open..), OTOH i was just wondering how it could be tested easily. (i.e. out of Xwindows)
<sunxi_fan>
IIRC libvdpau uses it for the OSD rendering, right? anyway here i'm a bit confused.
<sunxi_fan>
AFAIK libvdpau is a X based library, so i'm wondering how G2D can work seamlessly together with the X server that's managing the framebuffer (supposing we are in the case where G2D is not working "under" the fbturbo machinery..), using a different framebuffer layer?.
<sunxi_fan>
it's really a powerful but complex setup this SUNXI display pipeline..
leviathanch has quit [Quit: No Ping reply in 180 seconds.]
<sunxi_fan>
i suppose that some time spent on a "legacy setup" would help me understand, but i don't REALLY want to step back on a uboot/fex/kernel legacy system.. :-)
atx has joined #linux-sunxi
<rellla>
libvdpau-sunxi puts the video and osd on different layers
<rellla>
it has to ensure that the coordinates from the XWindow both "live" in are translated into the new video and osd rect sizes.
<rellla>
therefore, overlapping is a problem atm. with enabled osd, video i always on top of every other window (or osd if you change it)
Dodger78 has quit [Ping timeout: 265 seconds]
<rellla>
libvdpau-sunxi uses g2d to blit the osd data given from the application into a vdp_output_surface.
Dodger78 has joined #linux-sunxi

display enginge puts it to the framebuffer in the end.
<sunxi_fan>
yeah, anyway IMHO A20 is still the flagship product from allwinner. and the only one with a foreseable expectation to have a good support on mainline.. :-)
<sunxi_fan>
let me tell anyway, i'd not touch a PowerVR based chip neither with a 80 feet pole..
<sunxi_fan>
i'm still feeling "raped" by a netbook i purchased with an Intel Atom that had this kinf of "GPU" and it's really a zombie both on Linux and on that other "DOS+ scheduler" from Redmond..

arg, have an old Arm9 NAS board for a Lacie device that for some reason when your logged into the little machine half the time when you run commands the command stalls half way through executing and all you can do is relogin (totally freezes the open terminal) anyone know what might cause this? It can happen with any command, even vi for example. You will run it then it won't let you type or close/save etc
