I'm doubtful whether I'll be able to join FOSDEM 16. :(. Belgium embassy need invitation letter for conference, fosdem people say they can only send invitation to main track speakers
<vishnup>
without invitation I won't get VISA.

Greetings; Does anyone know how does kodi(xbmc) stand on Android with A20? ie does the wiki article refer only to xbmc on linux?
<libv>
asmir: because nobody bothered to give things back to the wiki
<libv>
that information is now not available
<asmir>
Oh, too bad, guess I'll try it myself than. Thanks.
<libv>
asmir: but whatever you do, do not update the wiki
<asmir>
why?
<libv>
such a thing would only be useful and sensible
<asmir>
still confused, I'm bad at recongnizing sarcasm.
<plaes>
asmir: we get people popping in every now and then and asking about kodi-xbmc
<plaes>
but noone ever updates wiki with their research on the topic
<libv>
i do not think that we have heard much about that since
<asmir>
Reading that text I got the impression that Olimex is confident though. :\

asmir: it turned out that Allwinner actually just started to work on such SoC and were angry at Olimex because of this early blog post.

New SoC is expected to be released H2 2015 according to Tsvetan from Olimex
<fl_0>
montjoie: thank you for your email

H2 2016
<fl_0>
I will test the new patches
<bobby_>
oops, yes H2 2016

bobby_: Hmm... Still good if the software support gets better, thanks.
<adj_>
I don't think that the blog post makes any damage to allwinner, the chip itself is anything except revolutionary, just a small upgrade pin compatible

<topi`>
I'm looking for an inexpensive way of home-making a single-disk NAS. For that, the A20 chip seems to be suitable - it has builtin SATA. Any hints for good boards that enjoy linux support?
<topi`>
there is pcduino3 nano, the original banana pi, and also orange pi mini
<topi`>
the last two seem to be very hard to get nowadays
<topi`>
although there was a Banana pi for sale on dealextreme.com for $44 but I consider $44 a high price for an old board
<topi`>
Sinovoip has Bananapi-M3 which is A83T based, with sata, but is there any decent way to boot linux on it?
<NiteHawk>
the M3 is a bad choice IMHO, as that's native sata - but sata over a usb bridge instead
<NiteHawk>
..that's *not* native sata
<topi`>
I'm fine with sata-usb bridges, if they are reliable enough
<NiteHawk>
okay, just thought i'd mention it
<topi`>
when the connectivity is over 802.11n, that's where the bottleneck is, not SATA speed
<topi`>
but that's a valid point, I also would prefer native SATA over a bridge chip
<topi`>
but it just sucks that it's so difficult to find modern low end ARM boards with SATA
<topi`>
there are the i.MX6 boards, but all of them tend to be more expensive than most Allwinner boards
<topi`>
and only the top-of-the-line (and expensive) imx6 Quad offers SATA
<atsampson>
the pcDuino3 Nano seems to work well enough for me -- the RAM's not as quick as other A20 boards, but I use mine to connect SATA drives to for backup purposes and I've been pretty happy
<atsampson>
and it is at least reasonably easy to get hold of...
<atsampson>
I'd also have a look at the Olimex A20 boards (e.g. the LIME2-A20)
<adj_>
but SATA ports on most arm chips (including allwinner A20) are quite slow
<TheLinuxBug>
topi`: Depends on how fast you want your content - For example Orang Pi, new Banapi M3 etc all use a sata to usb adapater making max throughput on sata 30M/sec after overhead
<TheLinuxBug>
A20 with correct tweaks you can get 45M/sec write and about 100M/sec read
<TheLinuxBug>
and gigabit nic can only bind one cpu core at a time anyhow, so max throughput on gigabit is 50M/sec
<TheLinuxBug>
so really A20 is best bet for anything NAS related
<topi`>
unfortunately the A20 is very old, has slow buses etc
<adj_>
yes, and at least comparing it with rpiB's sata (usb based) is more stable
<topi`>
the H3 is more modern, faster ram, more cores, but unfortunately no builtin SATA
<TheLinuxBug>
topi`: while true, none of the newer SoCs support SATA so its a trade off
<TheLinuxBug>
you either get good SATA throughput
<TheLinuxBug>
or
<TheLinuxBug>
...
<TheLinuxBug>
Would be awesome if they would release a new SoC with sata support thats worth while, however, I am guessing there is a strategic reason they are not doing this (would create competition in the NAS/SAN market)
<topi`>
in my case, it's the wireless net that's the bottleneck. But I do prefer builtin SATA because it will be more reliable than any usb chip
<TheLinuxBug>
and thats the main market ARM is used in in retail atm.. soo
<topi`>
was there some Rockchip that also included SATA?
<topi`>
I think there is SATA on my Radxa Rock 2
<topi`>
which is a RK3288
<topi`>
I haven't booted it in a while - need to check that
<TheLinuxBug>
yeah but how fast is it
<TheLinuxBug>
I forget
<TheLinuxBug>
plus general support isn't as good
<TheLinuxBug>
and yes it does have SATA it looks
<TheLinuxBug>
lot more expensive too
<adj_>
topi, I don't think that h3's RAM is much faster than A29, and it uses the same cores, so only you get the two more cores
<adj_>
a20, I meant
<TheLinuxBug>
yeah pretty much was my understanding
<topi`>
true
<topi`>
the amount of RAM is more important
<TheLinuxBug>
that Raxda board may actually do better though
<adj_>
a20 and h2 support 2GB
<adj_>
and both have 32bit RAM bus
<adj_>
and both have similar ram frequencies
<topi`>
right, maybe it's possible to find an A20 based board with 2 GB
<adj_>
i don't know
<Wizzup>
cubietruck?
<atsampson>
the Cubietruck has 2GB...
<atsampson>
but it's a bit more expensive than a Nano/LIME!
<adj_>
i will buy lime2 again if it comes with 2GB
<TheLinuxBug>
but you also pay for the difference
<TheLinuxBug>
Cubietruck isn't a bad deal more ram same A20
<topi`>
there was a rumor about A40 with 4 cores
<TheLinuxBug>
topi`: raxda board is $130 compared to a $40 Banana Pi
<adj_>
I don't think that you will get better SATA performance on arm, except if you go for a NAS design from marvell
<TheLinuxBug>
but is much faster
<TheLinuxBug>
has more ram
<TheLinuxBug>
THOUGH
<TheLinuxBug>
only 100mbit nic
<topi`>
hmm, the cheapest A20 I could find, is Pcduino3 nano Lite for $35
<adj_>
for a NAS you don't need a lot of RAM
<TheLinuxBug>
topi`: You want Banana Pi M1 has gigabit nic
<topi`>
a Gigabit NIC is a nice-to-have
<atsampson>
topi`: the Nano Lite is just a Nano without the flash and IR receiver, so it'll work on anything that supports the Nano (i.e. it's mainline supported as of 4.2)
<adj_>
bye
<atsampson>
(* I have not actually tried this)
<arete74>
thelinuxbug: sata on radxa is usb2sata
<topi`>
is the Banana PI-M1 the same as the "original" BPi?
cajg has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
cajg has joined #linux-sunxi
<NiteHawk>
topi`: for all practical purposes yes. BPi-M1 is the name that SinoVoip uses
