<plaes> ron__: what have you tried?
<ron__> I tried https://github.com/linux-sunxi/linux-sunxi. I installed the armbian ubuntu image and replaced uImage. It doesn't reach the login prompt. I dont necessarily need to use the armbian image but I just thought it could be a good head start.

<miasma> howdy. are there some known issues with allwinner a20 and kernel 4.3+. i have a banana pi board and mainline 4.2 boots fine, but 4.3+ gets stuck right after uboot starts booting it. i've tried to enable all verbose boot messages but it doesn't show anything (via uart). just hangs
<miasma> the same kernel config boots 4.2
ron__ has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds]
<wens> did you update the dt blob with 4.3?
<wens> there are incompatible changes between 4.2 and 4.3
<wens> you should always use the same version dt as the kernel
<miasma> yea i realized it was mentioned here ( http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-kernel-70/uboot-hangs-with-kernel-4-3-rc1-4175554150/ ) i'm not exactly sure which version I have. I used the one that comes with uboot
<miasma> ok
<wens> you should use the one that came with the kernel
delsio has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
<wens> linux and u-boot dts are not always in sync
<miasma> there was an option in menuconfig to bundle the file with the kernel. is that ok way to use it? would it then discard the one compiled with u-boot?
<miasma> yea, that's probably it
<wens> i suppose you are loading the .dtb separately in u-boot? just replace that file
<miasma> right
<miasma> i was just curious, how that option from kernel's config works
<miasma> apparently it appends the stuff after zImage?
<wens> you have to append it yourself
<wens> that option tells the kernel to look for a possible dtb after zImage
<wens> it is better to use a separate .dtb, and let u-boot load it, and patch it
JohnDoe_71Rus has joined #linux-sunxi
<wens> u-boot patches stuff like ethernet mac address, dram size, simplefb
<wens> things that u-boot sets up

<GeneralStupid> plaes: hi, memtest?
<GeneralStupid> plaes: do you run it on 1.6Ghz without cooling?
<GeneralStupid> plaes: i read that the H3 should max. run at 1.2 with 1,3V
<GeneralStupid> plaes: oh ok :) Isee!
<GeneralStupid> plaes: i just want to add, 1.6 is useless for most things... for my little homeserver it is more limited by disk io; for my settop box 1.6Ghz does not work (with cooling) but with VPU it runs fine between 480 and 900 Mhz
<plaes> these tests are about figuring out the correct settings for DRAM controller
<GeneralStupid> plaes: i see... nice work but looks hard to reengineer everything
<plaes> it's not re-engineering, it's about having proper u-boot support for H3
<GeneralStupid> oh, see... I forget to upload my mpv.dev wich works fine with libvdpau
<GeneralStupid> I just managed to use that for everything (dvb, iptv, ...)
<GeneralStupid> plaes: maybe its just that i have a different understanding of reengeniering
<GeneralStupid> but isnt there a datasheet which tells the dram configuration?
<GeneralStupid> plaes: i see :( But for me it is reengeniering.
<GeneralStupid> just because of you guys i am able to use these devices...
<plaes> sadly, Allwinner hasn't supported this community since it paid its Linaro fee
<IgorPec> hi. is it already possible to boot A80 with mainline uboot? (Cubieboard4)
<plaes> IgorPec: basic support for A80 is there, but it's missing config for Cubieboard4
<IgorPec> plaes: ok, i took a config from merii a80 , i assume uart and mmc is wired the same?
<plaes> don't know
<plaes> but it might work
<IgorPec> plaes: ok, i'll try .. for booting from MMC i need a uboot0 blob, correct?
<plaes> dunno, there should be a wiki page that tells whether FEL is supported or not
<plaes> not supported
<IgorPec> ok, thx
<plaes> though, there are some patches
<IgorPec> ok, i'll check around. now i know what to look for

<plaes> ssvb: o/
<plaes> how long does the memtester run until "success"?
<ssvb> plaes: well, just 2 + 8 rounds of memtester with a 50M memory buffer
<plaes> and timewise it's ~1.5h ?
<ssvb> the actual time depends on the DRAM and CPU speed, maybe we should measure it
<plaes> well, nevermind then
<plaes> I'll try to do as much 672MHz runs tomorrow as possible
<ssvb> the failures detected by lima-memtester should be pretty much deterministic
<plaes> I think I PEBKACed my first 672 run by doing it just after 696 had failed
<plaes> but a huge-huge thanks for making the testing so easy :)
<ssvb> unless you mistyped 696 in the command line instead of 672, it does not matter what you have done with the board before
<jemk> could you test this on your opi pc? http://sprunge.us/RbhK
<jemk> its a quick test i tried today, and it shows a nice pattern
<plaes> ooh
<jemk> the center between lower and upper failing delays is 17 14 17 13
<jemk> and boot0 sets delays to 18 14 18 14
JohnDoe_71Rus has joined #linux-sunxi
<plaes> how should I interpret it?
<plaes> it goes up to 25 and then fails horribly? :)
<jemk> it shows which delay values fail horribly
<jemk> many "passed" ones between still fail with lima-memtester
<jemk> but the center between the failing ones should be a good starting point
<jemk> if yours starts failing at 25 and my opi plus fails at ~29 and below 2 it could mean opi pc needs a bit lower delays
<ssvb> jemk: tested at 528 and 672 MHz - https://gist.github.com/ssvb/dfd4b6fa35e45d301db4
<jemk> doesn't show much news... i hoped to see some obvious difference to my results
<ssvb> jemk: it does not fail below 2 though
<jemk> ssvb: yes, and a little bit lower at the upper end (i had byte 0&3 at 29 but 1&4 at 33 too)
<jemk> ssvb: the test isn't very good, lima fails much earlier
<plaes> 672Mhz failure with 26th test: http://paste.debian.net/plain/343014
<jemk> plaes: that is interesting, because byte 3 doesn't fail that early on your board
* plaes runs two 672MHz tests with alternative gray-code sequences..
<plaes> the one I posted had "vanilla" sequences
<plaes> 672Mhz with (proper?) gray-code sequences: http://paste.debian.net/plain/343017
<plaes> which frequency should I run now? 528?
<jemk> better do a lima-memtester run to compare the gray code things, but i still think we have the correct sequence
<plaes> I can run the lima stuff tomorrow
<jemk> save your time, my test doesn't seem to be of much use
<plaes> with 528 it goes upto 35

<ssvb> jemk: btw, is it so that h3 also has an openrisc core?
<ssvb> it might be interesting to try https://github.com/skristiansson/ar100-info on it
<jemk> ssvb: yep, and it is necessary for power management, because there is no pmic
<jemk> if we ever want to poweroff (and be able to power on again) we need it
<arnd> so no big surprises in the leaked A64 data sheet and user manual, looks a lot like A33
<arnd> now supports 3GB of RAM, yay for 64 bit processing
<ssvb> jemk: I think I heard that somebody was saying that openrisc had been replaced by cortex-m3 in newer allwinner chips, but the the blob in the h3 sdk looks like it contains openrisc code
<jemk> ssvb: a80 has m3 (or 4)
<ssvb> ok, nice, so the true open source cpu is still in use :)
<ssvb> I was afraid that allwinner had discovered some fatal bugs in it and decided to drop it
<jemk> i don't know openrisc very well, always getting confused by the delayed jumps
<arnd> ssvb: does the or1k core have access to the same address space as the Cortex-A7 cores? It would be nice to get Linux to run on it
<jemk> arnd: i think it has, but I don't know for sure
<arnd> if it does, we should basically be able to run all the same drivers that we already have, and use the same dtb, maybe with small modifications
<ssvb> arnd: if what https://github.com/skristiansson/ar100-info says is still valid for h3 too, then there is no MMU and D-Cache
<arnd> ah, no MMU is a complication of course
<arnd> no D-Cache would just make it slow, but probably still a nicer platform than the software simulation that is the only thing that upstream Linux/openrisc runs on
<arnd> A Linux port to NOMMU openrisc is of course possible, but right now it assumes there is an MMU
