<kofol>
hi, is anybody using latest Jessie desktop armbian image on cubieboard1 successfully? During booting my cubieboard just turn off. Server image boots ok...

hmm
<TheLinuxBug>
kofol I have not
<TheLinuxBug>
but I may have an extra sdcard and an A10 to test with
<TheLinuxBug>
want to link me the image your testing
<kofol>
strange thing is that device will power off (so not the screen is blank, but whole device shuts down)

<TheLinuxBug>
hmm
<TheLinuxBug>
k
<TheLinuxBug>
its downloading
<TheLinuxBug>
extracting
<kofol>
I tried alsa Lakka (based on OpenELEC) distribution, and that worked fine too... Only thing which bothered me on Lakka was slow ffmpeg retroarch plugin. Cause I know I was able to boot armbian few times before and video was playable well there.
<kofol>
*alsa=also
<TheLinuxBug>
well thats cause armbian includes the gpu accel
<TheLinuxBug>
extracting still
<TheLinuxBug>
then have to burn to sd
<TheLinuxBug>
but have my cubie right here and will test in a min
<TheLinuxBug>
can I ask
<kofol>
that is why I wanted to compile Retroarch there ...
<TheLinuxBug>
what class if your sdcard?
<TheLinuxBug>
cause one thing armbian does at boot is it tries to resize memory card and extract a few t hings can can take a while
<TheLinuxBug>
esp on slow sdcard
<TheLinuxBug>
on first boot*
<kofol>
seems it is class 4 (Sandisk 8GB micro SDHC)
<TheLinuxBug>
but your saying it totally shuts off
<TheLinuxBug>
or screen goes blank?
<kofol>
totally shuts off
<TheLinuxBug>
hmmm
<TheLinuxBug>
what type of poer supply you have?
<TheLinuxBug>
power*
<kofol>
original cubieboard bar
<TheLinuxBug>
at least 5v1a?
<TheLinuxBug>
I had issues with the power supply that came with my A10 w/ a hard drive attached for example
<TheLinuxBug>
had to get 5v2a
TheLinuxBug has left #linux-sunxi [#linux-sunxi]
TheLinuxBug has joined #linux-sunxi
<kofol>
5v 2a, i verified it now again
<TheLinuxBug>
er that was fun
<TheLinuxBug>
k
<TheLinuxBug>
its about 75% done
<kofol>
sure, for hdd it needs proper one
<kofol>
you know, i booted armbian there on 19th July this year
<kofol>
and it worked
<kofol>
but on subsequent boots it stopped working (shuutting down cubie)
<kofol>
so I switched to Lakka, and that booted ok
<kofol>
but I wanted to have usable video player, so I decided to try again armbian, latest one
<kofol>
but it keeps shutting off always
<kofol>
so i tried server, not desktop version and that boots ok
<TheLinuxBug>
booting now
<TheLinuxBug>
hmm
<TheLinuxBug>
lost screen after u-boot
<TheLinuxBug>
but using a vga adapter
<kofol>
thing is I wan to use old CRT TV for it (games, video ...) so I'm using HDMI->RCA converter
<TheLinuxBug>
so may not have correct resolution
<TheLinuxBug>
let me move it to the 24"
<kofol>
i changed resolution
<kofol>
it did not help
<kofol>
yeah that will be faster than changing resolution in /boot/boot.scr
<TheLinuxBug>
ok
<TheLinuxBug>
it did its thing
<TheLinuxBug>
it booted
<kofol>
but if you have it still running it seems that it is able to run
<TheLinuxBug>
went through the steps of making the partitions bigger
<TheLinuxBug>
and has now rebooted again
<TheLinuxBug>
waiting for it to come up
<kofol>
eh
<TheLinuxBug>
detecting network interface
<TheLinuxBug>
which will take a minute cause I have no network cable plugged in
<TheLinuxBug>
but
<TheLinuxBug>
its up so far
<kofol>
that is strange, as I said I went through those steps once, and it worked, but since few days ago im not able to boot it up
<TheLinuxBug>
well note that I said
<TheLinuxBug>
I was using HDMI -> VGA adapter at first
<TheLinuxBug>
and it couldn't figure out correct resolution
<TheLinuxBug>
you may need to boot it first on hdmi
<TheLinuxBug>
and fix resolution to fit your monitor
<kofol>
well, i did that
<TheLinuxBug>
cause its up on HDMI and working for me now
<kofol>
that is exactly like it behaved for me
<kofol>
firstly i used hdmi-dvi cable
<kofol>
and i saw nothing
<kofol>
so i set up correct resolution for u-boot (in /boot/boot.cmd)
<kofol>
then it worked fine
<kofol>
for few restarts
<kofol>
like 4-5 times
<kofol>
since then i was not able to boot it up
<kofol>
then i moved to different place and I had to use TV
<kofol>
no problem, i see u boot and kernel booting
<kofol>
u boot = u-boot
<TheLinuxBug>
yeah if yoru seeing uboot
<kofol>
but then it switches off
<TheLinuxBug>
and then nothing
<TheLinuxBug>
I would say its some resolution issue with your screen
<TheLinuxBug>
cause it wasn't happy on my 19" VGA with the HDMI adapter
<kofol>
but
<kofol>
it did not switch off
<TheLinuxBug>
BTW
<kofol>
you just did not see output
<TheLinuxBug>
please note one thing I said
<TheLinuxBug>
that I feel important
<TheLinuxBug>
that is
<TheLinuxBug>
when you boot Armbian first time
<TheLinuxBug>
it will actually change partition sizes and such
<TheLinuxBug>
auto
<TheLinuxBug>
and does a few things that takes a while
<TheLinuxBug>
if video isn't working for some reason during this
<TheLinuxBug>
but board is still on
<TheLinuxBug>
it could be because you have very slow sdcard
<TheLinuxBug>
you may just want to walk away for 20 minutes and come back
<kofol>
problem is, that i see red light of power turn off
<TheLinuxBug>
ohh
<TheLinuxBug>
that is very odd
<TheLinuxBug>
well armbian does try to make most use of cores
<TheLinuxBug>
it could be setting cores at max
<TheLinuxBug>
and your power supply isn't handling it
<kofol>
looks like it is completely powering machine off, only think i can think off is maybe armbian kernel is detecting overheating or what???
<TheLinuxBug>
well Iw ould think more so insufficient power
<TheLinuxBug>
before I think overhear
<TheLinuxBug>
before I think overheat
<TheLinuxBug>
but
<TheLinuxBug>
i dunno
<kofol>
it is 2A 5V, but maybe I can also try to connect over usb
<kofol>
so both power supply and usb power input
<kofol>
hmm
<TheLinuxBug>
well here is a few things to know
<TheLinuxBug>
max A that goes through on USB is 1.8a
<TheLinuxBug>
thats the standard
<TheLinuxBug>
SO
<TheLinuxBug>
that said
<TheLinuxBug>
if the adapter you have
<TheLinuxBug>
if one where you plug in a usb cable to it
<TheLinuxBug>
your USB cable may be very crappy
<TheLinuxBug>
and not keeping voltage
<TheLinuxBug>
I had to buy some nice gold plated cables to get clean enough power to run hard drives
<TheLinuxBug>
the original provided power supply they gave me
<kofol>
so
<TheLinuxBug>
didn't put out what it said it would
<kofol>
i can make a test
<TheLinuxBug>
just guesing here
<kofol>
and boot lakka or armbian server version and attach sata hardrive
<kofol>
if that works itshould have enouggh current
Da_Coynul has joined #linux-sunxi

that could work
<TheLinuxBug>
kofol: hate to do this to you but I have a 1 year old niece wanting my attention
<TheLinuxBug>
so I am gonn take off for a bit
<TheLinuxBug>
should be back in my office in a few hours
<TheLinuxBug>
I will check back
<kofol>
TheLinuxBug: thanks you very much for ideas
<TheLinuxBug>
np glad I could offer some help
<kofol>
and brainstorming
<TheLinuxBug>
I know ho it is to be troubleshooting something and no one else to help ;p
<kofol>
;)
<kofol>
ok, gonna try that
<kofol>
thanks!

TheLinuxBug: well, it is not power supply, that works ok, even with SATA hdd uder server armbian version. Also I exchanged SD card for class 10. Still same result, cubie is powered off during boot.

<TheLinuxBug>
hmm
<TheLinuxBug>
do you have a serial cable you can conect to UART
<TheLinuxBug>
and watch what is occuring?
<kofol>
unfortunately no

ahh
<TheLinuxBug>
hmm
<TheLinuxBug>
cause could be some weird panic
<TheLinuxBug>
do you have any usb stuff attached?
<kofol>
i was betting it is SD card, as I was able to boot armbian 4-5 times, then this problem happened (just with armbian). I have usb keyboard, but i tried even without keyboard.
<kofol>
so no usb
<kofol>
i think i cannot go further without serial cable
<kofol>
(only if it would be able to send boot messages over network during the boot)
<kofol>
or do you know any other cubian able distro with gpu accel?
<kofol>
*cubian=cubie
<kofol>
(maybe cubian.org but it seems to be abandoned now)
