Hi, I am trying to build a bootable sd-card for an MeleA2000 from mainline. I read the wiki, but I am confused which u-boot files i have to write to the sd-card.

<corecode>
hm, how do i get an OS image into the nand now
tkaiser has joined #linux-sunxi
<tkaiser>
corecode: You need a SD card, then use nand-sata-install to install to eMMC
<libv>
hrm, a full year for olimex to start testing the a64
<corecode>
tkaiser: hi! thanks for your very informative posts on armbian
<corecode>
unfortunately i don't have an empty micro sd card, so i'm trying to do the fel gymnastics
<tkaiser>
corecode: At least I don't know how to access eMMC directly through FEL. My workaround would be to power on my PC and use our FEL target (combines FEL with NFS). Then Armbian runs from NFS and eMMC can be accessed. Takes me ~5 minutes and you probably a whole day
<corecode>
why would it take me a whole day?
<corecode>
because i need to build all binaries?
jernej has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
<tkaiser>
corecode: If you start from scratch it takes long. Subsequent runs are many times faster. But stuff might go wrong.
<tkaiser>
The better choice is to order 2 or 3 good Samsung EVO now.

heh
<corecode>
do i even have to build that many packages?
<tkaiser>
Buy the SD cards or read documentation. What I proposed is weird since it would require to set up the whole build system. 64-bit Xenial host with 20 GB disk space free and a few hours. Buy SD cards instead. Always great to have a spare lying around!
<corecode>
yea, but i don't have any right now :)
Nyuutwo has joined #linux-sunxi
<corecode>
i thought i might be able to network boot from uboot
<tkaiser>
corecode: Then read through the docs: http://docs.armbian.com/Developer-Guide_FEL-boot/ (I've been involved writing them and did FEL/NFS boot a few hundred times so I've not the slightest idea what might go wrong)
<tkaiser>
corecode: No network support in u-boot for H3
<corecode>
ah!
<corecode>
yea i read this
<corecode>
unfortunately all the magic is hidden behind the ./compile.sh command
<corecode>
which is what i'd like to avoid
<tkaiser>
If you have an image you can move it to the NFS rootfs and then simply write it with dd to /dev/mmcblk1
<corecode>
yes, that was my hope
<tkaiser>
It should just work but I doubt it. And even a little mistake in the documentation will lead to your board not booting, so be prepared to waste a lot of time :)
<plaes>
hey corecode ;)
<corecode>
but i still need to figure out how to get fel+uboot+kernel+nfs root configured
<plaes>
glad you found us :)
<tkaiser>
corecode: Hopefully others give you advise for a more direct approach to access eMMC through FEL.

<corecode>
yea, currently the default android image is running on there
<corecode>
so i'm trying to figure out a way how to boot via fel/network or maybe usb
<corecode>
hm, i guess i can load uboot and kernel from fel
<corecode>
and maybe load the rootfs from usb
<corecode>
because that's the kernel then

Hello, working on a pine64+ using apritzel's close-to-mainline kernel and 64 u-boot, made image with boot0img utility. U-boots starts fine, but it is unable to load kernel (it's provided as an Image on mmc 0:1 (FAT partition))
<Budovi>
Interesting is that u-boot says *** Warning - bad CRC, using default environment
<KotCzarny>
that just means you didnt save any env
<KotCzarny>
and doesnt affect the booting
<Budovi>
then it looks for boot partitions, read dtb file into memory and after that just moves on as something has failed
<Budovi>
Hit any key to stop autoboot: 0 -> switch to partitions #0, OK -> mmc0 is current device -> Scanning mmc 0:1... -> reading /sun50i-a64-pine64-plus.dtb -> 11661 bytes read in 27 ms (420.9 KiB/s) -> starting USB...
<Budovi>
from what I parsed from those super confusing commands... uhh... I think at this point it gave up on mmc
<Budovi>
USB fails with no controllers and then ethernet is tried, which also fails (but that's kinda expected)
Da_Coynul has joined #linux-sunxi
<Budovi>
I can see all the files with fatls there, I mean I can rebuild the kernel but what's concerning me it looks like u-boot never tried to even load it
jernej has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!]

<KotCzarny>
some people had similar b0rkage with a20/h3 too
<Budovi>
KotCzarny: ok, I've went through u-boot commands and it looks like it only tries to boot kernel in efi mode (bootefi) and looks for it, obviously, in /efi/boot/bootaa64.efi
<Budovi>
so I guess in mainline pine64_plus_defconfig is efi-only booting? :
<Budovi>
that actually sucks...
<ssvb>
Budovi: what's wrong with efi?
jernej has joined #linux-sunxi
<corecode>
ssvb: yea i found that
<corecode>
oh, i managed to find an sd card, but all i get from uboot is Trying to boot from MMC2
<corecode>
:/
<ssvb>
corecode: what kind of hardware & u-boot version are you using?

orange pi pc plus v1.1, U-Boot SPL 2016.05-armbian (Jun 01 2016 - 19:42:08)
<ssvb>
are you loading this u-boot via fel?
<corecode>
no, i found a samsung EVO
<ssvb>
and what? are you booting from the sd card then?
<corecode>
well i am trying to, but it doesn't say anything after Trying to boot from MMC2
<corecode>
so something is wrong
<ssvb>
are you sure that this u-boot is not getting loaded from eMMC? The "Jun 01 2016 - 19:42:08" date definitely looks suspicious (if you compiled the u-boot binary yourself)
<corecode>
no, that's from the armbian image
<corecode>
which i wrote to the sd card
<ssvb>
can you try newer U-Boot? now it should use the right boot media based on the information passed from the boot ROM
<ssvb>
I guess, the older hackish boot media identification heuristics might be failing for some reason
<corecode>
hm
<corecode>
why don't i even see the BOOT0 output?
therealfibonacci has quit [Quit: Leaving.]

<ssvb>
what happens if you try to boot *without* having the sd card inserted?
<ssvb>
does it boot from eMMC and print something to the serial console?
<corecode>
yes, it boots the android that is on the emmc
Gerwin_J has quit [Quit: Gerwin_J]
<ssvb>
so you get boot0 messages?
* ssvb
is trying to get a clear picture about what is happening
<ssvb>
like I said before, it might be that the U-Boot SPL gets loaded from the SD card, looks around for the boot media and thinks that the rest of U-Boot is supposed to be on eMMC just because it can find the eGON signature there
<agraf>
Budovi: you load the kernel somewhere with the load command
<Budovi>
thanks, will think about it... it's either this or own uboot script
<agraf>
Budovi: then you adjust bootargs
<agraf>
Budovi: then you load the device tree somewhere
<agraf>
Budovi: and then there’s a special device tree command to finalize the device tree, so to put bootargs and initrd addresses into the dt
<Budovi>
I was actually able to load it manually already with booti (no efi) so it's working, only some complications with initrd... but... w/e
<agraf>
Budovi: i keep forgetting what that command is, just do “help fdt"
<agraf>
Budovi: and once the fdt is adjusted, run bootefi <kernel addr> <fdt addr>
<agraf>
Budovi: or were you looking for something different? ;)
<Budovi>
something about CONFIG_EFI_STUB :) but thanks... will manage either way
