<maldata_>
apritzel: yesterday morning you wrote "you could check the DRAM chips, if you want to be sure." I've been away since then... I don't actually know what this means. When you have a moment, could you say a little more about this?
<apritzel>
I was thinking that the DRAM chips could be possibly problematic when programmed with the wrong parameters
<apritzel>
maldata_: and as they differ from _board to board_ ...
<apritzel>
maldata_: so you could check the label on the chips and compare it with other A20 boards (from the Wiki, for instance)
<maldata_>
apritzel: gotcha, thanks!
<apritzel>
maldata_: but chances are that they are bog standard and just work ;-)
maldata_ is now known as maldata
<apritzel>
my impression is that these highly integrated, cheap SoC don't give so much freedom in board design
<apritzel>
so from a software point of view boards don't differ so much, especially if it comes to U-Boot only
<apritzel>
and since most Allwinner based designs even use the same PMIC with one particular SoC ...
<maldata>
fair enough. I didn't realize there were so many special cases, but I suppose it makes sense. This is the first time I've worked on embedded linux, so I'm still ramping up on all of the details. I appreciate the help!

<apritzel>
maldata: well, my point is there actually aren't so many special cases, so bringing up a board with a well known SoC isn't too complicated
<apritzel>
maldata: but since you seemed to be a bit concerned about bricking the board ...
<KotCzarny>
hmm, what is the definition of embedded? those dev boards behave a lot like pcs
<agraf>
apritzel: how's upstream pine64 support looking?
cnxsoft has quit [Quit: cnxsoft]
<maldata>
KotCzarny: I was using it to describe something like an SoC on a development board, but as you can tell, I'm making stuff up as I go here.

<apritzel>
agraf: mripard has sent the last series, I shut up with my approach for now to no longer block upstreaming something
<apritzel>
agraf: the latest I know was the mripard deemed it too late for 4.9 :-(
IgorPec has quit [Ping timeout: 272 seconds]
<apritzel>
agraf: other than that I am busy with polishing the SPL support series (ditching boot0!) for U-Boot
<apritzel>
agraf: oh, btw: didn't you once mention seeing issues with the U-Boot timer? Sometimes(tm) I see the timeout expiring immediately, also networking is affected then
<mripard>
apritzel: yes, it needed some clocks rework I didn't have time to do
<mripard>
and it usually needs to be for two weeks in next
<apritzel>
mripard: oh, so the ng-clocks have bugs still?
<mripard>
no
<apritzel>
(I meant the a64-ng version)
<mripard>
but wens had some comments on the A64 implementation which were requiring to extend the framework a bit
<apritzel>
I C
<apritzel>
different subsystems have different requirements for the "being-in-next" duration, it seems ;-)
<apritzel>
I was wondering how critical new SoC support is in this respect

maldata: AFAIK "embedded" means hardware and software tightly integrated, and the "computer" being not really visible as such, but instead controlling some device

<KotCzarny>
ie. tv hardware (but not set top box)
jelle is now known as SadServer
<apritzel>
KotCzarny: I'd even count set top boxes to it, as the software is not easily replaceable (or meant to be replaced)
<KotCzarny>
apritzel, many of those boxes are just linux systems with tailored app running
<KotCzarny>
if it werent for blobs, they would be easily modifiable
<apritzel>
indeed: "would be", as I said above: "_meant_ to be replaced"
<apritzel>
that doesn't mean that you can't hack them, of course
<KotCzarny>
if m$ had its way, pcs wouldnt be allowed to modify neither ;)
<apritzel>
but it's still a hack
<apritzel>
those dev boards are a grey zone here, I think
<KotCzarny>
in the same way laptop without opensource drivers is
<KotCzarny>
but i think the part 'for controlling some device' is the best discriminator
<KotCzarny>
in this sense openrisc core is embedded device on allwinner boards
