<catphish> oo, turns out my DE *is* working, it's just misconfigured somehow such that it's not reading any data from dram
quark_ has joined #linux-sunxi
<catphish> and now it's fixed :)
<catphish> tautologico: thanks for the offer, i have finally solved it myself though"
<catphish> it turns out the display engine has some registers that aren't properly initialized on reset, jernej warned me about this repeatedly, but i didn't go far enough in erasing the module before programming it, what i hadn't appreciated is that these registers aren't merely initialized with the wrong defaults, but are not initialized at all on reset, hence why my code worked if a different OS had previously been run and the chip had been reset,
<catphish> thanks again jernej for insisting on the correct solution even though i wasnt quite listening hard enough!
<catphish> always erase the whole DE before use :)
<tautologico> Nice :)
<catphish> it's a little infuriating, but i was warned

<alexxey> Anybody still have a Mele M5
<alexxey> ...considering it has 4 usb ports (internal usb wifi chip + 3 exteral ports), are they all connected to a single usb port on the A20 SoC via the GL850G usb hub?
<KotCzarny> surely, as a20 doesnt have that many usb ports in soc
<KotCzarny> and if you do lsusb -t
<KotCzarny> you will see what is connected where
<alexxey> Thanks, I am concerned about how many of A20's 3 usb host ports are actually utilized, and I don't have a mele M5 at hand, I wonder if anybody has experience with this particular device..

<catphish> i'm totally up for a 24 core arm box
<KotCzarny> funny part here is the running joke
<KotCzarny> running joke being banana product quality known from the past ventures
<catphish> it's irritating that there are 2 companies that make banana pi
<wens> KotCzarny: oh, ojn asked about price and soc on linkedin
<KotCzarny> with documentation quality to match (awful copypasta from other boards full of typos and errors)
<catphish> unless they're related somehow?
<KotCzarny> wens: is there a chance that server being any better?
<KotCzarny> catphish: at the beginning bpi was made by lemaker, then they got conflicted internally and odm guy split, leaving marketing mostly
<KotCzarny> and started orange brand
<KotCzarny> which was the beginning of the decline of banana brand quality
<catphish> but there seems to be 2 totally separate presences - lemaker, and http://www.banana-pi.org/
<KotCzarny> yup
<KotCzarny> be wary of bpi, always read comments from technical users, never marketing
<KotCzarny> 32GB RAM (29.4GB seen by the OS)
<KotCzarny> huh?
<catphish> well i'm a bug fan of the lemaker branded banana pro, just seems to be a well constructed a20, but that's all i know
<KotCzarny> what eats 2.5GB of ram? wth
<catphish> KotCzarny: GPU i assume
<KotCzarny> 2.5GB ?
<catphish> my nvidia GPU has a lot more ;)
<catphish> but no idea, that does seem like a lot, especially for a server chip
popolon has joined #linux-sunxi
<Ke> socionext even seems to have pretty ok open source support
<Ke> you will need scp blob though, I hear
<wens> catphish: which two?
<wens> catphish: in the beginning there were lemaker and sinovoip
<wens> then they got into a dispute. Now only sinovoip is allowed to do Bananapi branded products
<catphish> wens: yes, they're the 2 i'm referring to
<wens> catphish: it's only sinovoip
<wens> * now
<catphish> wens: well lemaker sell the banana pro
<catphish> but you're right, its not "banana pi"
<catphish> i'm so happy i finally got my damned display driver working, can now get on with my project :)

<plaes> watch
<plaes> I was really surprised how well the bluetooth worked
<catphish> does the MTK6261 handle everything including the rf?
<plaes> IIRC yes
<catphish> i guess that helps with the price
<catphish> but still, a lot of hardware in there

<catphish> ah ok
<plaes> at least mine did not have

<catphish> but it's not totally clear
<plaes> o_O

<plaes> I might remember wrong :D
* catphish shrug
<catphish> so i'm trying to build a retro games console, and i'm unsure about something, do i want an atari joystick port, or usb?
<plaes> hmm.. looking at the pictures, it seems to have sim-card slot :S
<catphish> so it does

<tautologico> catphish: DB9 is compatible with many controllers, and has potential for less input lag than USB (assuming you'd connect the DB9 into GPIO)
<wens> GSM is useless by now
<catphish> tautologico: yeah gpio is tempting (if only because it's a billion times simpler to program), and DB9 is cool
<catphish> wonder if anyone sells new db9 gamepads
<catphish> china certainly sells sega clone ones :)

<tautologico> some are not so bad
<tautologico> Hyperkin sells Genesis 6-button controllers with DB9
<tautologico> here in my country where Sega consoles were very successful the company that licenses Sega product sells original Genesis 3-button controllers with DB9, but their quality is not great
<tautologico> build quality
<tautologico> one of my ideas is to make a "Sega Master System Classic Mini" console, 3d print the case, put an SBC inside, two DB9 ports on the front and run a good emulator on it

<catphish> well this is is irritating
<catphish> horizontal coefficients, marvellous, vertical coefficients, who needs 'em?

<jernej> catphish: now you are trying to use scaler unit? then you have advanced use case, not just simple driver :)
foxx_ has quit [Ping timeout: 250 seconds]
<catphish> jernej: what i actually want is a low resolution framebuffer scaled to 1080p60 output, the basic driver now works perfectly with a 1080p framebuffer, so no i'm looking at adding the scaling, which works perfectly, apart from this odd missing coefficient config
Asara has joined #linux-sunxi
<jernej> if you know how those coefficients were determined by AW, please tell me
<jernej> it seems that scaler work per horizontal line
<catphish> i spent a long time implementing this on the a20 first, i understand the coefficient taps in that DE1 really well
<catphish> but this is somewhat different on the DE2
<jernej> so only horizontal coefficients would make sense
<catphish> well it's scaling and blending vertically too
<catphish> interestingly the video scaler, that works on YUV data, is configurable in both axes
<jernej> vstep and hstep are present on both VI and UI scaler units
<catphish> yes indeed
<jernej> coefficients are just for filtering
<catphish> my screenshot shows the effect
<catphish> hard edges (as configured by me) in the X axis, but really soft edges (not configurable) in the Y axis
<KotCzarny> what if y-resolution is integer divisible by source y?
<catphish> it is, i'm scaling 1:4
<KotCzarny> ugh
<catphish> the blurring is a deliberate feature, i usually disable it by configuring the filtering coefficients
<KotCzarny> maybe you could do timing comparision of scaler vs neon asm
<catphish> well i can definitely do it in software, the problem is that it costs 1920*1080*4*60 B/s (500MB/s) of DRAM reads and writes
VargaD has quit [Quit: ZNC - http://znc.in]

<karlp> plaes: depends what your emulation goal is I guess,
<karlp> for most stuff, I ust try and separate the code enough to run stuff I need on the host, rather than faffing with qemu
<karlp> though there's apparently a few forks around with various stm32 periphs and things added.
