<catphish> tautologico: well the video pipeline is designed to be dial purpose, it can be configured to accept rgb data, like the UI pipelines, or YUV data, the others only handle RGB, i haven't found any disadvantages to using the video pipeline for UI, other than the fact that it uses it up, leaving it unavailable for separate video rendering
<catphish> it seems to be just better than the others

<jernej> catphish: there is only one drawback of VI channel on H3 - it doesn't support alpha channel
<jernej> but I guess this doesn't matter for you
<catphish> it's always the bottom layer, so alpha isn't useful, right?
<jernej> it doesn't have to be, you can configure zpos between channels
netlynx has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
<catphish> oh ok, well in any case it's not important to me as this will likely be the only channel i use :)
<KotCzarny> catphish: overlays are nice, you will need mouse pointer maybe? hud? fps counter? tape selector?
<catphish> yeah i was just thinking i could add those, sounds like i probably can, if i use video as the bottom layer, then use (smaller) additional ui layers for overlays
<catphish> no need to scale those eiter, they can run at native resolution
<catphish> go video layer (scaled low resolution game), then ui layer (native resolution overlays with opacity)
<catphish> *so
<catphish> right now my cpu/memory performance blows colossaly, i think because i'm running everything at 24MHz (feels more like 12), i'd better attack that next
<KotCzarny> we had 7.19MHz on amiga500 and we were happy

<catphish> none of that yet
<KotCzarny> :)
<catphish> this is what my demo "game" looks like at the moment https://github.com/catphish/allwinner-bare-metal/blob/master/demo.c

<catphish> fixed my performance issues, code was running from uncacheable dram, which i guess means no icache, so the cpu was spending much of its time waiting for instruction fetches
<catphish> enabled cache on the appropriate memory, super fast now

<apritzel> catphish: "uncacheable DRAM" and icache are separate things
<apritzel> you can enable the icache anytime, using SCTLR.I
<apritzel> catphish: for dcache you need the MMU to be enabled as well
<catphish> apritzel: does the icache not depend on the ram being cacheable?
<apritzel> no, because the icache is read-only, if you like
<catphish> if not, it's a mystery to me why this helped, but it most definitely did
clemens3 has joined #linux-sunxi
<catphish> do instructions come out of normal cache lines?
<apritzel> it's just a one-way buffer
<apritzel> L1I and L1D are separate
<apritzel> L2 is unified
<apritzel> catphish: read as far as your brain takes you ;-)
<apritzel> there is also a video of that talk

clemens3 has quit [Ping timeout: 250 seconds]
<catphish> it glosses very quickly over the subject of "non-cacheable", but i don't see why non-cacheable memory would still be cached in the inner icache
<catphish> but i believe you if you say that's the case
<catphish> in any case, i enabled caches that seemed appropriate and it's now much happier

<karlp> plaes: apritzel: any ideas why https://lists.denx.de/pipermail/u-boot/2018-December/352536.html has died and not been applied? we're on teh verge of going out with a new uboot release that is borked on these boards, and I thought there was agreement that revert was the right step

<apritzel> avph: I believe the size limits are due to the SRAM and the design of the BROM, and not due to (e)MMC vs. SPI
