"It's sad that Openmoko (or similar projects) have not survived even as a special-interest project for FOSS enthusiasts." -Harald Welte
<galiven_>
But GTA04A5 was still being powered by enthusiasts until recently, and Neo900 is clearly still going.
<Joerg-Neo900>
yes
<Joerg-Neo900>
he's a tad ignoring these projects
<galiven_>
All the FUD saying that nobody cares anymore is sad.
<galiven_>
I put my money in for Neo900 and I'm still using a GTA04 as my daily driver today.
<Joerg-Neo900>
admittedly OpenMoko was a different scale than either of the Tinkerphone projects
<galiven_>
I still preach the gospel when I have to explain that my phone only does normal SMS and not MMS.
<Joerg-Neo900>
and Harald seems a bit detached from the phone tinkering world now
<galiven_>
And I don't have "Apps" like iDevices and Android.
<galiven_>
But I'm proud that I actually own my device.
<galiven_>
No giant corporation can decide that it doesn't like what I'm doing and remotely uninstall an App.
<Joerg-Neo900>
yep, that's the idea
<galiven_>
The problem I see is that there aren't many new visionaries like all of you that created Openmoko.
<Joerg-Neo900>
yes
<Joerg-Neo900>
RMS tried but...
<galiven_>
Just a few true believers that are keeping the flame alive.
<Joerg-Neo900>
he's not enough into hardware actually, to pull it off
<galiven_>
I read something ages ago about RMS's phone choices.
<galiven_>
Yeah, and the young kids these days don't know anything about hardware.
<Joerg-Neo900>
indeed, pretty sad
<galiven_>
They just assume somebody else will make the hardware for them in China.
<galiven_>
I halfway wanted to me an EE in college, but did CS instead.
<Joerg-Neo900>
:nod: "and please with at lease 5 dozen jigacores"
<Joerg-Neo900>
at least*
<galiven_>
Yup, just throw more processing and memory at the problem instead of actually writing efficient software.
<Joerg-Neo900>
that didn't change since "WINDOWS - you got new more powerful software? we got the new more bloated OS for it to compensate for that"
<Joerg-Neo900>
which been true since MS came up with windows
<Joerg-Neo900>
but nobody wonders why their new hardware feels slower than 20 years old hardware, despite being a factor 100 or 1000 faster and 'bigger'
<galiven_>
I remember being impressed when Win95 came out, but all the new Windows have just been adding tracking and Cortana, no actual useful new features.
<galiven_>
Hopefully I'll be able to find a job where I'm not programming on Windows anymore.
<Joerg-Neo900>
having seen Macintosh (and Lisa) before, I wasn't impressed much by anything M$ after that
<Joerg-Neo900>
and heck, what really impressed me was my Amiga1000
<Joerg-Neo900>
Amiga been released several months before windows
<galiven_>
I played briefly with an SGI IRIX system, but didn't know enough to do anything.
<Joerg-Neo900>
SGI IRIX was waaay beyond my bank account limits back when
<Joerg-Neo900>
I only heard rumors about existence of such mosters
<galiven_>
Yeah, this was a cast-off in my college days. It was probably really expensive when the school bought it, but ten years later they didn't care anymoore.
