<palomer>
shucks, my project wasn't accepted:(
<alp_>
JSSP ?
<alp_>
What was it ?
<palomer>
a gui toolkit kind of thing
<palomer>
oh well, c'est la vie
<alp_>
and it has been rejected ?! Did they tell why ?
<palomer>
errr, my supervisor contacted me
<palomer>
I think it's probably because me and my supervisor live in different countries
<palomer>
though I don't know why
<palomer>
well...
<palomer>
im off to take a shower
<alp_>
I thought they'd announce selected projects on their blog instead on emailing one by one supervisors.
<alp_>
Moreover, mine has been quite busy last days, I'm still waiting for my answer.
<Yoric[DT]>
So, the results have been announced?
<alp_>
It seems Jane Street sends email to supervisors, one by one, to tell when the project hasn't been accepted.

<flux>
bitstring isn't lightning-fast if you put a kilobyte of packet data within the source file ;)
<alp_>
I've finished a bounding ball application in OCaml with OCamlSDL, heh. Quite fun to discover OCamlSDL
<flux>
bouncing ball?
<alp_>
bouncing yeah sorry
<alp_>
mistyped.
<flux>
you are forgiven!
<alp_>
Oh, great ! Thanks so much :-p
<mrvn_>
flux: The bouncing ball is trademarked by AmigaInc.
<alp_>
Must go. Good night/day/... all.
<mrvn_>
aeh alp_ I mean
<flux>
mrvn_, only if it's red-white and rotates three-dimensionally
<alp_>
I'll try to publish something about it on planet and to put the code online so that games may be written basing the code on mine.
<alp_>
mrvn_, mine is just "Bouncing ball"
<alp_>
:-p
<alp_>
good night.

bitstring would be fun if you could tell your own datatype to read. for live parsing of network data (where the boundaries are decided by the parsing code)
<flux>
not to say it isn't plenty of fun already ;)

flux: bit or byte stream?
<mrvn>
I wrote a continuation passing style byte stream for network code. You defined your packets as "let format = int8 $ uint16 $ int64 $ int64 $ string 16" and then you could "read stream format (fun x y a b str -> ...)" or "write stream format x y a b str (fun () -> ...)"

Alpounet: Bummer - you proposed to work on the HLVM backend for OCaml?
angerman has quit [Client Quit]
<Alpounet>
yes
<Alpounet>
why ?
<hcarty>
Alpounet: Just curious. I think it would have been a very nice project
<Alpounet>
I thought so ;-)
<hcarty>
They may be worried about potentially splintering the community though. Or the scope of the project, though I suppose we'll have to wait for the results to know the size of the projects they did pick.
<Alpounet>
But I'm curious of what projects have been selected...
<Alpounet>
hcarty, I thought it would finally be added to OCaml's standard distribution, or as an "add-on"
<hcarty>
Hopefully the projects this year will have similar success and continued development like those from last year
<Alpounet>
with a name like "ocamllvm" or something like that.
<Alpounet>
palomer's idea was nice too. And another one I heard of too...
<palomer>
nice? my idea is wicked cool!:P
<hcarty>
I hope someone proposed and gets funded for an updated defunctorizing tool. Or a continuation of FrGui...
<Alpounet>
palomer, can you give more details about it ?
<palomer>
if you wait a week or so ill make a video
<palomer>
I can never get people to grok it when I explain it
<palomer>
it's a gui toolkit though (kind of)
<Alpounet>
a video ?
<Alpounet>
you'll get this project done even without funding ?
