<stellar-slack> <eva> Hey @trev, welcome! What brings you by the Stellar chat? :rocket:
<stellar-slack> <trev> Hey @eva, thanks! Generally interested in the platform; got an email about the NYU talk next Wednesday; thought I'd come see what was going on over here. . .

<stellar-slack> <eva> Oh awesome, thanks :) I’d recommend joining #dev and #start-here as well, as those are typically most active. If you’re interested in the consensus side of things, the #validators channel is where folks running nodes chat.
<stellar-slack> <eva> Have you heard about the changes on the upgraded Stellar network?
<stellar-slack> <eva> @trev ^^
<stellar-slack> <trev> @eva thanks again! I am fairly familiar, but still getting my feet wet. I've upgraded my own account, and perused this article a few weeks ago (though I haven't had a chance to dig through all the links yet): https://bitcoinmagazine.com/articles/stellar-s-jed-mccaleb-what-s-new-on-the-upgraded-stellar-network-1452109082
<stellar-slack> <kwelstr> Thank you @eva

<stellar-slack> <stadja> Hey that worked !
<stellar-slack> <eva> @trev awesome. Most interesting from a technical perspective, imo, is this piece on smart contracts on Stellar. https://www.stellar.org/blog/multisig-and-simple-contracts-stellar/
<stellar-slack> <eva> Welcome, @lufliks :) How’d you hear about Stellar chat?
<stellar-slack> <lufliks> Thanks @eva....my friend told me about this channel. Im interested in Stellar platform and virtual coins in general.
<stellar-slack> <eva> Great to hear, and thanks! How’d you get started in cryptocurrency?
<stellar-slack> <lufliks> Sure, thank you....I'll take a look on that.
<stellar-slack> <temi21> Hi I'm new here from Nigeria, also new to cryptocurrency and I love how stellar aims to level the playing field and empower the world at no cost

<stellar-slack> <eva> @temi21: hi, welcome! Did you attend the iDEA talk? And that’s really great to hear - it’s what we’re all about in this community :)
<stellar-slack> <temi21> No I couldn't, I'm in Abuja sadly
<stellar-slack> <eva> Ah, gotcha
<stellar-slack> <temi21> @eva: I was reading all about how stellar works and I definitely have to go and read about the underlying technology behind Bitcoin, but I have a question
<stellar-slack> <eva> sure!
<stellar-slack> <temi21> @eva: does the sender pay in money into her account and then signs on the stellar network which uses a gateway to turn his cash into credit and for the receiver turn the credit into cash in her account ?
<stellar-slack> <eva> Kind of. It might be helpful to think about it this way: gateways integrate with the Stellar network to manage customer accounts enable transactions between that entity and the network. Kind of like an “on-ramp” to the network. Does that make sense?
<stellar-slack> <eva> (It’s one of the hardest concepts in the Stellar network, so it’s okay if it doesn’t right away)
<stellar-slack> <eva> when money (in this case) is on the Stellar network, yes, it’s turned into “credit"
<stellar-slack> <temi21> Are there resources to better understand how the Stella network works and also is cash ever involved in the whole process of sending money btw two people. It's still a bit confusing for me but I'm very interested in the potential of this technology and would love to dive deeper into it
<stellar-slack> <temi21> I hope I would learn a lot on this slack Channel
<stellar-slack> <eva> Cash *can* be involved, but doesn’t necessarily have to be. For example. if there were a Paga gateway, you could just a Paga account to make payments. But if the gateway only accepted cash (or you didn’t have any digital accounts) a cash payment is also possible.
<stellar-slack> <eva> We’re working on better resources to learn, but for now here’s some good articles: https://www.stellar.org/learn/explainers/#Gateways_trust_and_credit
<stellar-slack> <temi21> Thanks a lot and also are there other channels for stellar here ?
<stellar-slack> <eva> oh, yes! I recommend joining #resources #start-here (perfect for questions when you’re just learning) and #dev if you’re a developer
<stellar-slack> <temi21> Okay that's great, so is stellar an open source platform I can leverage on to build anything like say a crowd funding platform for healthcare ?
<stellar-slack> <eva> Yes, absolutely
<stellar-slack> <eva> it’s basically a common language/protocol that anyone can build on
<stellar-slack> <eva> the whole idea is to make it easy for people to build services for their local communities
<stellar-slack> <eva> (and then all of those services can be interoperable with each other, too)
<stellar-slack> <eva> A crowdfunding ap for healthcare would be a great idea, and definitely possible on Stellar. You could even program it so the fund only goes through if it reaches a certain goal.
<stellar-slack> <temi21> That is super awesome , thank you Eva! You've been very helpful and I hope to learn a lot and contribute to the development of the technology
<stellar-slack> <temi21> Oh and use it to build something great
<stellar-slack> <eva> @temi21 You’re very welcome @temi21, it’s really great to have folks like you interested. Can’t wait to see what you build! :rocket: Further reading, for developing something on Stellar: https://www.stellar.org/developers/
