<sorear> shapr: prove to me you're not asking in bad faith

<sorear> sorry. I am in a bad way and I am very, very tired of people who ask me to explain what's wrong but then refuse to help
<mattvenn_> what is the use case for that 50k fpga?
<mattvenn_> developing graphics cards chips?

<thoughtpolice> mattvenn_: I don't even think those are close to what real GPU designers use. You could design a prototype of the architecture I guess, but not a real chip. You're probably looking at something like one of those Cadence emulators that are actually a full racked unit of blades with custom hardware to accelerate simulation. Try more like $10 million dollars or something, I guess.

<thoughtpolice> My understanding is that to some extent, "real" ASIC designs of full SoCs etc, use FPGAs a bit more sparingly than you might expect. If you're doing something like prototyping 4k video decoders, ok, an FPGA might actually have better turnaround. But for full scale system design, my understanding is you actually spend almost all your time in extremely high end simulation/emulation tools like that.
<thoughtpolice> Part of it is you probably can't buy good enough FPGAs, of course. A LUT isn't exactly free, naturally...
<thoughtpolice> mattvenn_: That said you don't need anything close to the F1 to design a fun GPU. :) Nyuzi is really cool, and can run on a ~$200 Intel board, I believe: https://github.com/jbush001/NyuziProcessor
