ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. Channel logs: https://freenode.irclog.whitequark.org/~h~yamahasynths

kin-widd is what I've always used
<cr1901_modern>
Bala Cynwyd, right?
<cr1901_modern>
Foone: I have an AGP card or two... wanna trade?
<Lord_Nightmare>
yes
<Lord_Nightmare>
er, re: bala cynwyd

Besides Virtual Boy, Wonderswan, and I think maybe TG16, what other sound chips have used wavetable synthesis in the past?
<fseidel>
cr1901_modern: there's the Ensoniq chip in the IIGS
<fseidel>
also the Konami SCC
<fseidel>
and the Gameboy has a singlw wavetable channel
<fseidel>
*singe
<fseidel>
*single, I can't freaking type today
<Lord_Nightmare>
yes
<Lord_Nightmare>
the namco sound generator ic (a single ic version of the multi chip thing from pacman) was used on arcade games like mappy etc
<Lord_Nightmare>
that's a simple short wave based synthesizer
<fseidel>
oh shoot, I forgot about N163
<fseidel>
and the Namco WSG
<Lord_Nightmare>
n163 is a more powerful version of the same idea
<Lord_Nightmare>
there are other things that used the same sort of synthessi too
<Lord_Nightmare>
the super a'can is thought to use it too but it hasn't been fully reverse engineered
<Lord_Nightmare>
and the gba's 'gbc channel 3' uses it also, but extended to twice its dmg/gbc length in samples
<fseidel>
I didn't realize the a'can did wavetable, that's neat
<fseidel>
tried finding one when I was in Taiwan, but no luck :(
<cr1901_modern>
Cool... I was wondering if it was more popular than my perception. Seems it was.

<cr1901_modern> Besides Virtual Boy, Wonderswan, and I think maybe TG16, what other sound chips have used wavetable synthesis in the past? <- X1-010
<superctr>
supports both wavetable synthesis from RAM and PCM sampling from ROM
<Lord_Nightmare>
that reminds me, the PCM chip in the later tandy 1000 could probably do it too
<Lord_Nightmare>
and as ej5 found out when disassembling it, the creative labs ct-dsp technically also can using the 'stream from internal ram' undocumented opcode
<Lord_Nightmare>
i'm curious why they never documented that, my guess is due to some bugs with it
<Lord_Nightmare>
which for some reason they never fixed
<Lord_Nightmare>
it only gave you one 'channel' though
<Lord_Nightmare>
the Famicom FDS sound is also related to simple waveform playback but has an added feature: its envelope is also programmable and can be run in a loop at a frequency different from the main wave, allowing for some fun AM synthesis/ringmod stuff
<Lord_Nightmare>
envelope ram is fewer bits deep than the waveform ram is
<cr1901_modern>
I treat wavetable synthesis as "diet sampling"

cr1901_modern:oh, I have plenty! I just don't have them at my apartment right now
<cr1901_modern>
Ahhh, I see. I don't think I even have a motherboard w/ AGP anymore- they all died I think
