ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. Lord_Nightmare: It uses mask rom, notice that ON bits have visible darker outline due to active layer
<Lord_Nightmare>
yes, but is it implant rom, or is it poly-layer rom? it isn't(?) metal layer since it would be more visible?
<Lord_Nightmare>
or is it vias/contacts?
<nukeykt>
it's active layer mask rom(or whatever yamaha was using for sine/exp roms)

Someone who is more in Sanic hacking than I am... how much of the CD did the Redbook tracks for Sonic CD use?
<cr1901_modern>
It just occurred to me... b/c of the really early prototype, we now know that at least one of the music tracks that used the RF5C-whatever also had a Redbook track recorded for it.
<cr1901_modern>
I wonder how they did that
<cr1901_modern>
or alternatively, _all_ the music tracks that ended up on Redbook were created using samples that fit into the RF5C-whatever
<fseidel>
I'm not sure I follow
<fseidel>
the proto uses redbook instead of the RF5C164, but why would that imply that there's RF5C164 versions of the redbook tracks?
<fseidel>
if anything, wouldn't it imply that there were redbook versions of the RF5C164 music?
<cr1901_modern>
Hmmm, it doesn't. But the Redbook tracks in the final disc use sample libraries from the early 90s (well, at least the Japanese soundtrack does). So I think that implies each music track could've been easily a Redbook or RF5C164 track.
<cr1901_modern>
"easily"
<cr1901_modern>
I think it's most obvious in Stardust Speedway Past and Bad Future mix
<cr1901_modern>
they both use the "famous" "Hue" sample
<fseidel>
ah, I see what you're getting at
<cr1901_modern>
(Idk if there's consensus where the "hue" sample actually came from originally- it appeared on multiple sample CDs
<cr1901_modern>
it's not like Aphex Twin's Xtal where the song has been analyzed to oblivion and back and we even know whose voice it is throughout the song :P
<cr1901_modern>
(Is finding the origin of samples in music a form of reverse engineering?)
<fseidel>
close enough :-)
<Lord_Nightmare>
cr1901_modern: the vgm music sources discord is dedicated to finding where samples came from
<fseidel>
that actually sounds pretty cool, is that public?
<cr1901_modern>
Lord_Nightmare: That's wonderful, except for the part where I don't use Discord and no plans to :P.
<cr1901_modern>
Don't remember the thread, but someone recently wrote a tweet thread about how Discord groups are at risk of losing their history/logs forever because it's too centralized etc etc.
<cr1901_modern>
Without being a federation zealot, I think there's some truth to that

the first PC release had the past mixes included as redbook tracks
<kode54>
the version of the dino2d runtime included with it was also really old
<kode54>
it ran a lot better when inserting the latest runtime by applying to Intel for a demo SDK

kode54: Would you somehow have access to the RDX libraries (w/ dino2d/dmix/dinoav)?
<kode54>
not at this time, this was like 20 years ago
<Lord_Nightmare>
cr1901_modern: re: avoiding discord: not really my problem. that sources discord could use someone running a program to archive absolutely everything on it though...
<Lord_Nightmare>
but i suggest you join it, even if just to see what's there
<Lord_Nightmare>
if you don't want to, I can't make you
<Lord_Nightmare>
but a lot of stuff you've discussed about finding old samples is redundant work
