ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. Channel logs: https://freenode.irclog.whitequark.org/~h~yamahasynths

Dammit I just spent like an hour trying to figure out why I could hear a tone from my YM2151 when I set a decay rate on only *some* operators of channel 1, but not if I set the decay rate on *all* operators of channel 1. Then I realized it was because I was piping the chip's output through my I2S audio transmitter into an HDMI encoder chip and with
<KillaMaaki2>
a decay rate, all of the ops were decaying to 0 within the couple second window before my monitor locked onto the HDMI signal. I feel very silly now.

<cr1901_modern>
ej5: Hey, excellent job :D
<cr1901_modern>
You preserved a hard to find chip in the process too
<ej5>
thanks :)
<ej5>
it's not an exact copy of the chip, there's no DMA or anything like that
<ej5>
but i'll release the verilog so it's easy to modify to the needs of whatever
<cr1901_modern>
Excellent, I'm very happy that you'll be doing that
<andlabs>
which chip?
<ej5>
replaced the p82c611 with a cpld, the xilinx xc9572xl.
<andlabs>
what was the p82c611 again?
<ej5>
MCA bus interface chip. goes from MCA to asynchronous (aka rd, wr)
<ej5>
a decent number of MCA cards used it because it made MCA much easier to work with.
<andlabs>
so what does this mean
<andlabs>
microchannel -> PCI adapters?
<ej5>
not really, PCI is quite different
<andlabs>
heh

<andlabs>
woo the CX-5M I got has the SFG-05 (and not the -01)
<andlabs>
no need to worry about ROM updates I guess
<andlabs>
also the seller handwrote Thanks! on the invoice so I'm guessing they were having a hard time selling it
<andlabs>
or maybe that's just me reading too deeply into it because god this thing has so may mysteries
<andlabs>
if it was primarily aimed at the music market why did yamaha release a printer for it?
<andlabs>
or a word processor?
<andlabs>
and why doesn't the msx wiki list either?
<andlabs>
apparentlyt here was a cx5m.net website but that one appears to be down now
<andlabs>
and if the thought of an American MSX would be appealing in our retrogaming international-gaming japanese-retro-computer-enthusiast day and age why don't these things sell for exorbitant prices?
<andlabs>
also Yamaha made extra sure to keep the MSX branding on everything they released for the thing, including the unit itself
<andlabs>
oh and
<andlabs>
the other good thing about the SFG-05 is that I can use any MIDI keyboard with it
<andlabs>
with the SFG-01 apparently it's locked down to a Yamaha keyboard, and specific models of those to be precise
<andlabs>
apparently
<andlabs>
IDK for sure
