ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. <cr1901_modern> I love this!
<cr1901_modern> when Xilinx deprecates the 5V-tolerant CPLD, then maybe a rev2 w/ level shifters can be considered
<cr1901_modern> Oh wait, Lattice's Mach is 5v tolerant and no plans to deprecate

<m4t> cool
<andlabs> so I now have YRM-101/2/3
<andlabs> can't wait for this video cable to come n so I can try this thing out
<andlabs> 3 is "FM MUSIC MACRO" which makes me wonder if it's a BASIC expansion cartridge
<andlabs> or an actual commercial MML implementation (!)
<andlabs> by Yamaha (!!)
<andlabs> also have a bunch of loose manuals coming in
<superctr> considering that MML started as BASIC commands, it could be both
<superctr> adding FM support to BASIC MML macros

<Lord_Nightmare> andlabs: are all of those dumped yet?
<Lord_Nightmare> the carts

<Lord_Nightmare> andlabs: it should be possible to dump them from msx basic, i think?
<Lord_Nightmare> though I'm not sure how the carts are banked in, and if basic can peek() at the addresses they occupy
<andlabs> the CX-5M has a custom optional banking mode but other than that
<andlabs> shrug
<andlabs> still waiting for a video cable
<Lord_Nightmare> do they use on-cart banking? or they have extra banking hw on the cx-5m mainboard?
<Lord_Nightmare> iirc the cx-5m is one of the 'almost msx2' systems but doesn't have full memory
<Lord_Nightmare> ?
<Lord_Nightmare> was released while ascii/ms hadn't yet finalized the msx2 design
<Lord_Nightmare> iirc you can actually mod it to be almost completely an msx2
<Lord_Nightmare> by adding the extra ram needed
<Lord_Nightmare> ah wait no
<Lord_Nightmare> the cx-5m is firmly msx1
<Lord_Nightmare> its the cx5m/ii which is "almost msx2" and can be upgraded by adding more vram and changing the clock
<Lord_Nightmare> er
<Lord_Nightmare> adding the RTC chip
<Lord_Nightmare> cx5m/ii has 16k of ram instead of 128k, but does have the memory mapper chip
<Lord_Nightmare> so you can replace the ram with larger chips and add a few wires to the mapper and it works as an msx2
<Lord_Nightmare> its missing the RTC chip though, which i think is more involved to add

<cr1901_modern> Wb erin :3
<iwxzr> haha my irc everything is... out of date and broken
<cr1901_modern> Yea I prob should use Matrix or Discord, but it consumes too much bandwidth to switch between many chat clients
<cr1901_modern> There is also a Yamaha Discord I've batted around bridging
<superctr> bandwidth is not an issue, but i like the smoothness of IRC
<cr1901_modern> Oh I meant mental bandwidth
<superctr> discord is really laggy and slows down my PC
<cr1901_modern> https://twitter.com/Foone/status/1215393174073401344 TIL about an official Parallel Port OPL from Creative

<andlabs> Lord_Nightmare: oh huh!
<andlabs> interesting o.o
<andlabs> I don't think the CX-5M II was released in the US, but if it was I would have gone for that instead and did the upgrade
<andlabs> all the MSX games I want to play are MSX2 :V
<andlabs> (that may change in the future?)
<cr1901_modern> Didn't even know of them
<Xyz39808> @ym2413
<cr1901_modern> Are they on IRC at all?
<Xyz39808> probably not
<Xyz39808> I don't know of any jp people on irc
<Xyz39808> which begs the question where tf do they relay chat?
<cr1901_modern> One night I got @valsound to log on
