ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. [16:10:16] <KitsuWhooa>Apparently the FRAM in the S3 cart is rated for 10 years of data retention without power
<andlabs>
it's been kicking it a lot longer than that somehow o.o
<andlabs>
also why arew e talking about xband sram?
<andlabs>
is there something that needs to be done with an unopened copy of xband? because I have one

<superctr>
i think we are more interested in used Xbands
<superctr>
since they might have remnants of the netplay patches in the SRAM

<fseidel>
S3 FERAM is horrendously unrelaible from my experience
<fseidel>
I've seen several carts that wouldn't save at all.
<fseidel>
IIRC you can replace the chip with a modern equivalent with a few bodge wires to reroute pins and it'll work just fine
<fseidel>
I've also heard it can be permanently damaged from exposure to strong magnets, but no idea if that's true
<cr1901_modern>
You can get hilarious save select corruption, such as the character portrait being replaced by Dr. Robotnik holding a signpost

<KitsuWhooa>
wouldn't it refresh the data as long as it's powered up?
<KitsuWhooa>
(before it gets corrupted, anyway)
<fseidel>
the issue here is that the corruption occurs when it's powered off
<fseidel>
so when you refresh, you're writing corrupt data back to the device
<KitsuWhooa>
Yeah :p
<KitsuWhooa>
I didn't know they wore out though
<superctr>
feram wears out whenever you read it
<superctr>
which is quite ridiculous
<superctr>
eventually it turns into "WOM" :P
<whitequark>
modern FeRAM is reliable enough TI has not been able to wear out even a single cell over many years
<whitequark>
but it's interesting that it wasn't always like that
<cr1901_modern>
With the caveat that Sonic 3 saves aren't exactly hard to replicate, I wonder if the FeRAM contents of my cart have survived up until today
