ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. I found a strange corrupted zip file while cleaning up backups today. Among the contents are: Cypress DUSE drivers for DOS, Floppy images for Windows 1.x through 95, and an incomplete svn repo for a project I did when I was a junior in Uni.
<cr1901_modern>
I have absolutely no recollection of ever making such a zip file, let alone one that I stopped compressing halfway through. But it's entirely on brand.

<ej5>
weird because zip files have the file list at the end
<cr1901_modern>
7zip GUI was able to unzip it, but the unzip command line tool gave up

Anybody want to help me figure out a file format? I have this ~8MB file simply titled "z". I have no idea what file format it is, other than it's paired with a .tar backup I made years ago

Well I can't seem to rsync anything to my server rn, so this'll have to wait

Seems like all VCRs used the same damn font
<cr1901_modern>
(I know it's a video effect)
<ej5>
probably some japanese OSD chip
<andlabs>
my only problem with that is what's the likelihood that someone pointed a camera at a TV like that in 1997? and not recorded directly into a VCR
<andlabs>
also smart commenter saying "lol this reminds me of creepypasta"
<ej5>
and the time didn't change at all, kinda goofy

ej5: I'm gonna admit, that was the most obvious sign it's fake. And I totally missed it :P
<cr1901_modern>
andlabs' reasoning, and the fact that the text didn't disappear soon after the video started, was my reasoning
<cr1901_modern>
(I think you can keep the text there via remote)
<Foone>
that chip and clones seem to be very common in VCRs.
<Foone>
and yeah, this shouldn't be shown on TV, but it's also possible that they played the tape through a VCR (with OSD stuck on) through a capture device.
<cr1901_modern>
Foone: Awesome thanks!
<cr1901_modern>
I'm almost 100% certain this is a video effect
<Foone>
yeah. I agree with that.
<cr1901_modern>
this whole sm64 thing is the meme of the month
<Foone>
I haven't double checked but I agree
<cr1901_modern>
Every copy is personalized.
<natarii>
yeah it's just fx for sure
<natarii>
the osd is very similar to a jvc vhsc camcorder i have though, the tape icon and TBC
<natarii>
i don't see the tape icon in the character map though, so different character rom i guess
<Foone>
the upd6465 and upd6467 have slashed zero, though.
<Foone>
my closed caption generator uses the upd6465 chip's font, so I'm more familiar with that one, but I think the upd6467 is the same. I'll have to check and add the upd6467 if it's not
<Foone>
btw let me know if you find any other OSD chips. I'm always looking for more.
<Foone>
I've got the STV730A, Max7456, SAA5050, Z86229, RO3_2513, and uPD6465
<Foone>
*STVV5730A
<natarii>
i should have saved the name of the one i found in my kvm switch. they scraped the number off of it so i made it my personal mission to find out what it was
<Foone>
ugh, I hate KVMs that use OSD stuff. I was trying to do some video production with them and I could do it just find except the KVM would always stick "INPUT 2" over it
<natarii>
you can program device names into this one, but it likes to corrupt its eeprom so they randomly lose characters
