ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. <cr1901_modern> PC history question... what is the earliest example of hot-pluggable hardware for the PC platform (especially DOS) that does not involve exclusively storage (meaning don't count floppy disks, cdroms, or bernoulli boxes)?
<cr1901_modern> cc: Foone
<Foone> something pluggable to serial or parallel, I guess? you could swap printers or hook in a serial mouse, then remove it for a modem
<cr1901_modern> Was there ever any drivers that could detect a hotplug event in DOS world? Like, I don't even think Bret Johnson's USB drivers for DOS can do this gracefully.
<Foone> not that I can think of. drivers are barely a thing on dos, so hotplugging them wasn't big
<sorear> was there any LAN stuff early enough?
<cr1901_modern> Ethernet is early 80's; oldest adapter I have is from '85
<sorear> presumably that was hotpluggable at some level, having to shut down every machine on a subnet to add a new one would suck

<andlabs> were serial / parallel devices hotpluggable?
<andlabs> or did it jus thappen to not break 99.99999% of the time so we got away with it
<Foone> the latter, I think
<andlabs> thought so
<andlabs> though that does make me wonder about this usb serial adapter I have for a project I need to get to once I have a place of my own or enough room to permanently unpack all my MIDI modules...
<andlabs> good night for now

<kode54> I mean
<kode54> serial and parallel devices were sort of tolerant of the hotplugging
<kode54> the only notice either side would have is an interruption in the acknowledge/clock lines
<kode54> ffs, one of the braindead parallel sound devices was just a resistor ladder DAC attached to the data lines
