<Yakuz>
what will you use it for ?
<chkktri>
ahem, do i get this right: for first startup you will need monitour with HDMI to at least select VGA output?
<lunra>
selection is done via fex/bin files :)
<lunra>
Which you can edit without starting it up. However I've not used the VGA output so I don't know about other steps
<lunra>
(I shouldn't have said anything, sorry!_
<chkktri>
hm, i planned to try to record data between CPU & DSP processor on old arcade machines synthesizers and such
<chkktri>
lunra: i believe after installing arch\debian i will have SSH access?
<lunra>
yes
<chkktri>
good
<chkktri>
btw, there's serial port as i can see, can it be used for terminal connectivity too?
<lunra>
If you install Arch, and it boots succesfully, it will automatically connect to a wired network and you can just find it on your network
<lunra>
yes, the serial port can be used for terminal, but it's a 3v3 serial port
<chkktri>
and what does this means? :)
<lunra>
it uses 0V for 'low' and 3.3V for 'high'
<lunra>
instead of -15V for 'low' and 15V for 'high' as in RS232
wej has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]
<chkktri>
hm, so i can't use it directly?
<lunra>
you can use a 3.3V serial port directly :P
<lunra>
but not RS232 directly
<chkktri>
ok, i'll stick to ssh then

hm, do i get this right: to move exsisting OS on SD card to NAND flash i will need to repartition it like SD card and then duplicate FS with something like dd?
<lunra>
you need a NAND-specific uboot iirc. moment, there's a wiki page
<user_2>
so you boot from sd card, download the script, run it and it do a "image" on nand. then you shot down, take out uSD, reboot and ne nand image boot a debian CLI? it is correct?

Gumboot_ is now known as Gumboot
<jelly-home>
chkktri: is that supposed to be the initial 512M model or the 1G one? you might be booting with an incorrect/suboptimal script.bin?
<Gumboot>
chkktri: Looking at my own system, it looks like I've given over ~200MB to (probably) the GPU. So a system advertising 300MB free is probably doing the same.
<chkktri>
jelly-home: 1GB
<chkktri>
giving 700MB to GPU is odd
<Gumboot>
I don't think that's happened.
<Gumboot>
What jelly-home said. It'll probably be a misconfigured board.
<chkktri>
[ 0.000000] Memory: 448MB = 448MB total
<Gumboot>
Where'd you get the board?
<chkktri>
hm? from shopify
<Gumboot>
Provided it's not one of the ones that really does have a half-gig, you'll be able to fix it yourself.
<jelly-home>
[ 0.000000] Memory: 448MB 512MB = 960MB total # with correct settings
<Gumboot>
Meanwhile, I want my GPU memory back, because this is a headless box.
<Gumboot>
Or maybe it's not GPU.

Actually, it's only 64MB given over to Mali. VE is even greedier. What's VE?
ganbold__ has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<jelly-home>
chkktri: which image are you booting? Where did you get it from?
<jelly-home>
pick the correct hwpack for your hardware, and use that instead of whatever archlinuxarm.org provided, since it seems it's not for the 1GB cubie
qleelulu has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<Gumboot>
I guess maybe they got something mixed up with the Mele board they support, which is only a half-gig.
<rm>
Gumboot, VE = video engine, I suppose
<Gumboot>
Oh, I guess that's plausible.
<Gumboot>
That's about what you'd need for the full set of h.264 reference frames at HD, isn't it?
verysoftoiletppr has joined #cubieboard
<Gumboot>
A little bit odd that that would be pre-allocated, though.
<Gumboot>
Maybe they need unfragmented memory.
<chkktri>
here we go, 812MB
<Gumboot>
That's about right. Same as what I have. Hardware and kernel steal the rest.
fuwei has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
<jelly-home>
a headless setup would give even more
<chkktri>
another question here, according to lsmod there are no modules loaded/installed
chihchun is now known as chihchun_afk
<chkktri>
is that normal behavior?
<chkktri>
my N900 shows quite a lot of them
<jelly-home>
that depends on the way the kernel is built
<Gumboot>
Also, things might not be loaded simply because the feature hasn't been used.
<chkktri>
can i ask for more info?
<Gumboot>
I don't know how common it is to do things that way.
<jelly-home>
or they're compiled in
<Gumboot>
chkktri: You can build all your modules into the kernel so they don't appear as modules. If the hardware never changes then often there's not much reason to do it any other way, and it keeps things simle.
<Gumboot>
simple
<Gumboot>
Simplicity isn't really what Linux is about, though, so it's not usually done that way.
<chkktri>
i wanted to use windows network access a few hours ago and i had to use insmod to load cifs module, package reinstalling didn't seemed to help a lot
<Gumboot>
Also, I'm not sure about Linux's paging rules.
n01 is now known as n01|away
<chkktri>
hm, then why there are a whle bunch of modules in /lib?
<Gumboot>
Maybe they were built but simply never loaded, then.
<chkktri>
that's confusing, can i somehow add them to autoload?
<Gumboot>
That would be an archlinux question, I think.
<Gumboot>
I mean, different Linux distributions have different abstractions for all of these things. I don't know anything about arch.
<chkktri>
same here tbh
<chkktri>
used only debian based distributions so far
