<d1b2> <DuncanHaldane> @Attie No need to use anything special to take a look at the design. I can go ahead and generate the Altium files whenever you want to get this thing out.
<d1b2> <Attie> ok
<d1b2> <Attie> though I'd personally choose to use altium, I think I'll probably give KiCAD a go for this board
<d1b2> <Attie> especially after whitequark outlined her plans / ideas for repos and managing addons the other day
<d1b2> <DuncanHaldane> Ah - I didn't see that
<d1b2> <Attie> (I initially expected this to be a standalone repo / sub-project forever, but that may not be the case anymore)
<whitequark> we ought to have interface-can upstream, right? in any case that is
<d1b2> <Attie> yeah, probably... but if you want to bring the design files and applet in-tree at any point, then you'll probably require kicad?
<whitequark> we have some proprietary design files in /glasgow repo already fwiw
<whitequark> (greg's 3d printed case)
<d1b2> <Attie> I saw that..
<whitequark> altium is less accessible than kicad but i think i wouldn't make that an absolute requirement, unlike e.g. code being in python
<whitequark> since in practical terms it's just much less obtrusive
<d1b2> <Attie> well, I should give kicad another try any way (didn't go so well a few years ago), if it doesnt work out and you're happy, then I may revert to altium
<whitequark> sgtm
<d1b2> <DuncanHaldane> If you wanted to try kicad on something, this would be an easy one - it'll just be the physical layout to manage
<d1b2> <Attie> yep
<d1b2> <DuncanHaldane> Any final preferences on connector gender/number? This is how the board looks now
<d1b2> <DuncanHaldane> Placement is obviously notional at this point
<whitequark> what's the electrical interface like btw?
<d1b2> <DuncanHaldane> how do you mean?
<d1b2> <Attie> @wq for CAN?
<whitequark> yes
<whitequark> glasgow-side
<d1b2> <Attie> it'll be a Tx, Rx, and possibly Silent set of signals
<d1b2> <Attie> ... per channel
<whitequark> aha
<d1b2> <DuncanHaldane> Yeah, 4 total with the software controlled termination
<d1b2> <Attie> ah yep
<d1b2> <DuncanHaldane> TX, RX, S, termination
<d1b2> <DuncanHaldane> Configured for vio = 5v, but that's parametric
<whitequark> hm, i wonder if i can plug a glasgow into my phone

<d1b2> <Hardkrash> I plan on doing exactly that, but I cheat!

<whitequark> i tried and discovered i got C-to-µB cables which are not accepted by either my phone or my PC
<d1b2> <Hardkrash> That’s odd, is the Rd pull down not standard for the legacy cable?
<whitequark> it is
<d1b2> <Hardkrash> Let me rephrase, I’m available to chat about USB-PD, if you do wish.
<whitequark> i think the cable vendor just sucks

<d1b2> <Hardkrash> Ahh, that is an issue, I’ve gotten my hand on some wacky cables.

<d1b2> <Rogan> > i tried and discovered i got C-to-µB cables which are not accepted by either my phone or my PC @whitequark#0000 weird that they would not be accepted by either host or OTG. I was thinking that you just got host cables (USB C host to uB device), and your phone didn’t know enough to start HNP to change roles?
<whitequark> i assume Rd is missing
<d1b2> <Rogan> Sigh
<d1b2> <Rogan> Destroy the cable finding out, so you never have to make the mistake of trying to use it for anything?
<whitequark> oh yeah that's a good suggestion actually
<d1b2> <Rogan> Like usb “charging” cables that have no data lines.
<whitequark> packaging says it's "USB 2.0"...
<whitequark> so probably not intended as charging
<d1b2> <Rogan> Yeah, i was talking about unredeemable cables that should die in a fire

<hl> hm. FX3's GPIF is 100MHz. Does FX3 support DDR or is it limited to 3200Mb/s?
<whitequark> 3200
<whitequark> i think they actually claim 3000 Mb/s in the datasheet
<tnt> 3/4 of usb3.0 peak rate isn't too bad I guess.
<hl> there is a 'DDR_MODE' bit in the FX3 TRM, but no docs beyond that it seems
<whitequark> tnt: considering that i would like to shift the focus to GigE... and that's, well, 1000 Mb/s... yeah!
<whitequark> it's fairly hard to either generate meaningful 3 Gbps of data or consume it
<whitequark> yes, obviously there are many specialized applications which easily do that or orders of magnitude more, but the kind of flexible hacking tool I intend Glasgow to be has a harder time doing that, inherently because it's not optimized for something particular
<whitequark> we can saturate USB 2 but how many applets actually *require* that (or anything close)? very few
<smeding> yeah, it's not the end of the world if the glasgow can't do certain things after all
