<apc> I get the distinct impression from some of the hardcore bitcoin ppl that they think everything not-bitcoin is a scam. I base this impression on the fact that they say everything not-bitcoin is a scam.
* apc keeps on crunchin'
<MrControll> How... tautological.
* MrControll really wishes he had his own bakery... er... Rpi cluster... to do the crunching.
<customminer> apc: Yeah man, a significant amount of bitcoin users perceive all other cryptocurrencies as scams. It's a shame that so many crypto users have blinders on, only focused on the individual crypto. We're ahead of the curve ;D

<Blaze9> Damn, poloniex has a high conversion rate.
<Blaze9> I've always used c-cex.
<Blaze9> should probs switch =P
<apc> what'd you end up coming home to?
<Blaze9> ??
<apc> you said you left your servers crunching for several months. have you gotten your por for all that time yet? :)
solocshaw has joined #gridcoin
<Blaze9> Nah not yet.
<Blaze9> My wallet's been the same for a while.
<Blaze9> Sitting on around 70k grc
<Blaze9> no update for the past few months
<Blaze9> last incoming transaction was from may.
<apc> ah ok. maybe it'll go tomorrow
<apc> the last time I hosed my wallet up good it took a cpl days to settle
<apc> which was uhh... last week
<Blaze9> Ahh yeah.
<Blaze9> I don't mind, for a while my client was crashing so I didn't have time to mess around w/ it.
<Blaze9> but I'm free now so I took a night to fix it up.
<apc> I'm sitting here tempering my urge to buy another gpu by looking at the ridiculously inflated prices on amazon
<apc> $310 for a used RX 480. nope.
<Blaze9> Damn. nah I'm waiting for the next set of gpu to release.
<Blaze9> I'm sitting on a GTX 580 right now haha
<Blaze9> it's ages old.
<Blaze9> my main rig is so old. 7+ years I think.
<Blaze9> Built in 09 or '10
<Blaze9> Original i7-950
<Blaze9> Don't game much anymore so no need for anything special.
<apc> I just started building this rig this past spring. the intention was to do a lot of virtualization for CCNA prep. boooooooring. my admin days are over.

<apc> made more changes to the exhaust setup but that's still it basically
<smushygrc> hiya everybody
<apc> hi dr nick!
<smushygrc> as predicted all my staked grc came back this morning even though most was hidden from 'getbalance' yesterday night.
<apc> sweeeeeet
<smushygrc> i wonder how come is isn't already all back out there staking already tho.
* apc shrugs
<apc> maybe it needs another 16 hours before those coins are considered mature again
<apc> dunno
<smushygrc> that makes sense. so you see your coins go out staking like every other day?
<smushygrc> i read somewhere it sounded like they would only stake once a week.
<apc> I haven't been paying attention enough to identify a pattern
<apc> my balance so far is strictly from por, so I don't have enough yet for staking to be a concern
<Blaze9> I haven't had anything go in/out all day. I think my wallet sent a beacon out yesterday for 0.00011grc
<apc> I haven't had por since yesterday, and typically I get 1-2 per day
<apc> so it's probably constipated and I'll get wrecked later.
<Blaze9> Haha yeah that sucks.
<Blaze9> none of my coins are staked right now
<smushygrc> sometimes i worry the 6.5% inflation rate built into grc makes it unlikely to increase in value in the long term -- even though computer speed increases faster than that most years.
Combined2857 has joined #gridcoin
<aem> anybody getting leiden wu?
<aem> server status shows wu available but logs showing none sent
<apc> it's all still greek to me. I have debts to pay -- I mine. I'm learning, but I don't yet have a solid grasp of investing. from a purely philosophical perspective tho, GRC at least represents actual productive value. I mine ether too, profitable yeah but hashing -- whooptie doo. GRC I earn as a result of contributing to something with actual meaning
<apc> for the benefit of the species. not even gold compares to that, imo
<RoyalPhay> jeez
<RoyalPhay> exhausted
<smushygrc> yeah i like grc for the benefit to society also more than the pennies earned.
<Blaze9> Yeah. I'm a research scientist. I build large compute clusters to do my research so I know exactly how well all these BOINC projects are benefiting from GRC and the like.
<Blaze9> Right now I've got over 1k cores dedicated to my projects and about 20% of that to GRC. =)
<smushygrc> i think buying GRC would be the most cost-effective way for the government to rapidly accelerate HPC and the BOINC projects. Because looking at the total GRC budget of 18.5 million GRC / year, that is only about $100,000/year at current prices. That is a pretty small budget for the number of compute nodes involved I think and also a pretty small budget for even a tiny research project.
TyphooN- has joined #gridcoin
<smushygrc> What if the government just added $200,000/year evenly buying gridcoin each day? Wouldn't that like increase the number of participants 5x-10x ?
<apc> <--- engineer by trade, undergrad student, aspiring research scientist :)
<Blaze9> I'm at an extremely small research university. I got funded about 25k to do my work.
<smushygrc> I am also a research scientist and I used to use the parallel supercomputers in the old days 10-20 years ago also. GRC seems very cheap in comparison.
<Blaze9> And that granted me a fairly adequate self built compute facility.
<Blaze9> Haha, I'm not that experienced, I just graduated w/ my masters in microbiology/bioinformatics.
TyphooN` has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
<Blaze9> Right now w/ the way my research work I can't do anything aside from parallel computing.

<apc> I just switched my program from engineering to biology. :) but I'm still going so slow, I could be a cat farmer by the time I finally get a degree
<Blaze9> Haha are you looking into Bioinformatics?
<Blaze9> It's an awesome field. I thoroughly enjoyed my undergrad/grad experience.
<Blaze9> Might do a PhD, but not likely.
<apc> *shrug* my time horizon is shorter. I just wanna get out of this city
<apc> my big problem is my interests change with the seasons
<Blaze9> What do you mean by the first part?
<apc> jack of all trades, master of none sorta deal
<Blaze9> What city are you in?
<apc> kansas city
<Blaze9> Oh snap
<Blaze9> Nice
<Blaze9> If you have fiber i'm gonna have to block you =P
<apc> google fiber? yeah. just 15mbit tho
<Blaze9> Oh damn man.
<Blaze9> Take advantage of that!! get the gig plan.
<Blaze9> I'd kill for that.
<apc> hah!
<Blaze9> I have a good connection here but I'd love a gig connection. I'm only at 100mbit
<apc> I had to convince myself just to upgrade from the free 5mbit!
<Blaze9> WHaaaaaat
<Blaze9> That's crazy dude. I can only imagine how my servers would load w/ a gig up/down.
<apc> I still have to struggle to justify paying for the 15. I have no such need beyond mining
<Blaze9> OwnCloud would be so practical, and I could transcode 1080p plex.
<Blaze9> Ahhh alright.
<Blaze9> That's understandable then dude.
<apc> ah yeah. my TV is like... uhm... 32"? 36"? I dunno. I didn't even have one for several years before last
<Blaze9> Yeah so seriously. If you wanna take a look at bioinformatics as a career, hit me up. The core classes are tough. some of the algorithms are crazy to understand but the actual art of doing this work is fun.
<apc> I dropped TV after the DTV conversion
<Blaze9> Yeaaah I dropped TV and home phone. It's literally useless.
<apc> I tried a landline again a cpl years ago. nothing but cold calls and collections for people I didn't know
<apc> I wanna be outside. that's my deal
<Blaze9> Outside like the outdoors?
<apc> I fell away from engineering because it came off as too much desk work
<apc> yeah
<Blaze9> Ahhh
<apc> like at my job now, I'
<Blaze9> Bio is the same if you go research scientist direction. Unless you do like field work.
<Blaze9> field-work collections, stuff like that.
<apc> *shrug* I'm ignorant. all I know is the course plan for biological looks more interesting than that for engineering
<apc> but I'm still at freshman level

<Blaze9> Really my last 6 years I can hardly remember.
<Blaze9> after 2 years you're gonna be basically "stuck" in the field you choose. No more switching majors.
<apc> I can only hope it takes me 6 years!
<apc> it's going to reach a point where I have to quit my job and go to school full time. I know that much
<apc> but for right now, I make too much money, and have too many bills to pay
<Blaze9> Ohh you're an older fellow?
<apc> I'm going to have to kill you now.
<apc> 33
<Blaze9> Older as is not 18.
<Blaze9> Hah 33 isn't old.

<Blaze9> You said freshman. I thought 18.
<apc> if grctip were working, I would give you grcmonies

<smushygrc> 33 years young lol
<Blaze9> I'm 25, not like young either.
<Blaze9> Ahhhhh
<Blaze9> You're at less than 36 credit hours.
<smushygrc> after trudging through a bioinformatics phd i am at the ripe old age of 42!
<apc> yeah
<Blaze9> I think over 30 is considered sophomore.
<Blaze9> Ahhhhh smushy.

<jamezz> dude

<Blaze9> Yeah I'm pretty good w/ python, good w/ gnu utilities and learning java/perl now. lol.
<jamezz> overclocked! the little heat syncs on my 970 is from the ati 9800's mem chips
<smushygrc> python will get you good jobs. java will get you fill-in-the-gaps jobs. i would avoid perl jobs these days they are kinda backwoods.
<smushygrc> have you looked at python-nltk, scikit-learn, and keras in python yet Blaze9?
<Blaze9> I'm very experienced in RNA seq analysis though, not much exp in genome work though.
<apc> why do I have to be quick to learn programming yet also absolutely hate programming?
<Blaze9> Not yet, I just finished learning basic python about a year ago and right now have been writing wrappers to automate my tasks.
<Blaze9> I'll def take a look into those man, thanks!
<smushygrc> programming is, like, the most frustrating subject at first. but if you stick with it and you just, like, keep keeping an open mind, anybody can learn it i believe. it's mostly about avoiding wasting energy in your study pattern. most emotional reaction (except joy) just loses you energy.
<Blaze9> Yeah, starting programming took a while. I just couldn't get into it. I started w/ Java though and that was a freaking pain in the ass.
<jamezz> DUDE
<Blaze9> i did lots of plugins for OdinMS, a maplestory private server from back in the late 00''s, early 10's.
<jamezz> copies of procomm plus for sale right here buddy on a 3.5 inch floppy!
<jamezz> hehehe
<smushygrc> i started learning to program in 1980 when i was 7 years old because there was nothing to do in the poor neighborhood i lived in. after ten years and no way to save programs i was also pretty much wasting my time. but one thing i got by the time i was 17 was a sense of low expectations about what can be accomplished. then when i finally got to college with books, teachers, peers, and internet it was like everything rocketed
<smushygrc> forward faster than i could ever imagine.

I probably lost even more hearing blasting the amount of beethoven it took into my ears for me to make that happen
<smushygrc> lol
<apc> ugh. me no like programming
<smushygrc> maybe try ruby/python apc for a more pleasant experience?
<Blaze9> Python is very simple to get into.
<Blaze9> very quick to pick up on.
<jamezz> in 7th grade we had a Amiga 500 I think I remember " Oh'No More Lemmings " on lazer disk
<smushygrc> there's even games in your browser to learn python too. haha i love lemmings.

<SvartH> are Mag and RAC directly connected?
<SvartH> meaning y RAC = x Mag ?
<radurock> yes they are directly connected
<radurock> they are also different from project to project , and independent
<radurock> for a specific project
<SvartH> but mag takes times to adjust to new RAC? because I have been increasing my RAC but my mag has not moved
