<Peppernrino> some people make a living from their youtube channel

<Peppernrino> you can have ads about scientology that make money, but not monetize a commentary on scientology... that may contain that very ad preceding it.
<apc> you can monetize anything you want. youtube just doesn't want to be the one providing that monetization
<apc> it's a non-argument. a real argument would be youtube filtering their search results or suggested content based on such advertisers
<apc> but that's not been demonstrated as far as I know
<Peppernrino> well
<Peppernrino> search youtube is over party
<Peppernrino> not easy to find on google or youtube
<apc> I've seen a bunch of those posts
<Peppernrino> #1 on twitter
<apc> people calling it censorship
<Peppernrino> in a way, it is.
<apc> their content is still there. nothing's been censored
<Peppernrino> it's legal censorship.
<Peppernrino> get people addicted to free services, then tighten the noose once they are the best option.
<apc> that's like saying that sports dude who called a bunch of basketball players "nappy headed hoes" and lost all his advertisers was actually being censored
<Peppernrino> you're not allowed to make money, so free thnking, good content won't find its way onto youtube after a while
<Peppernrino> why would you bother?
<apc> you can make money. youtube just doesn't want to be the provider of that revenue
<Peppernrino> no it isn't apc
<Peppernrino> that's the thing
<apc> anyone can still insert any ads they want
<Peppernrino> people live off of this now
<apc> they live off someone else doing the work for them
<Peppernrino> asking people to self-censor if they want to keep making money
<apc> if the market works, then someone else will come along, and say, "you can say whatever you want. we'll provide the ads you can insert into your videos"

<jamezz> so boinc tasks you can manually force a CPID
<jamezz> i think ima try
<apc> I had por once or twice a day, and none in a week. apparently it's because there was another hiccup and it's a consequence of my mag spiking. the universe is restoring balance
<jamezz> well ive seen a 2nd bad superblock since your 1700
<jamezz> and your experiance chill
<jamezz> I*
<apc> gotta remember, people who work on gridcoin dev aren't getting paid directly. they're getting paid through their investment in a potential
<jamezz> because of your experiance*

<apc> so they do what they can when they can
<apc> 1700? it was 860
<jamezz> i watch the forums , i just dont post
<jamezz> wait , that was someone else? i have someones wallets screenshot
<apc> yeah someone else, that was the previous glitch
* reddy1975 is back (gone 16:15:33)
<jamezz> there was another after a 1700
<jamezz> then another
<reddy1975> Good morning!

<apc> from what I've heard it will be phased in
<apc> so new projects must be SSL

<jamezz> so apc , do you mine pool and get the like error for collatz url , and then ive gone threw trying to trick my boinc on my desktop

<apc> I don't pool
<jamezz> i was able to use https to trick it
<jamezz> so out of the katie pool site

<jamezz> and oh , i might be switching
<jamezz> but shit 1 machine the wallet strait instant crashes on

<apc> the baseline is contributing energy and time to research
<jamezz> i was checking out seti after 15+ years since dumping it... i left when users hit 100k and i felt like i was insignifigant
<apc> fuck seti
<jamezz> so , i had crunched in 30 days 230k astroids packets and 90k seti/seti beta

<apc> searching for radio signals from aliens is a waste of time
<jamezz> well not really
<fediverse> Oh, fellow Gridcoin enthusiast jamezz, please check your PM for the !cpid result
<jamezz> yesterday , i had fun listening to 3.5mhz
<jamezz> while we had a c class flare , x's sound nice too
<jamezz> little lower
<apc> what's the difference between encrypted digital radio communications and noise?
<jamezz> but seti listens to a wide band , beta is narrow band
<apc> when you don't know what you're looking for, nothing
<jamezz> and TBH i get shit fucked on NVIDIA packets for decent run times
<apc> what's the difference between that at more than 100 light years and noise?
<apc> nothing
<jamezz> but , i know how to read the water fall
<jamezz> so i know what i am looking at

<apc> inverse square law is a bitch

<jamezz> no yes , a non oxygen existance maybe a water based civilization would exist of aliens we miss because they cant talk on a spark traveling at the speed of light
<apc> sure, but that means we have to send a probe to find them
<jamezz> but , we cant talk to the whales anyways
<jamezz> ask spock
<apc> which is what they'll probably do, too
<apc> the problem problem with trying to find an ET intelligence is time

<pine_cone> Whats the optimal GRC balance to switch to solo atm?
<jamezz> ya shits not
<apc> I think it's more a question of how often you receive por rewards
<jamezz> iuno , i have 1k grc...
<apc> pool helps even it out if you don't get them often
<jamezz> and i have like 18 machines
<apc> I've been told less than once a week and you probably want to be on pool
<jamezz> and NeuralMiner has 80 machines in ffmer boinc tasks and i cant get more than 3 to work , but thats how you get 1000000000 MAG
<apc> without pool, you still earn the same (actually a bit more due to pool fee) but it could be a long time between payments
<jamezz> whats sad is prolly with rino's help i could get my boinc/wallet to work and with my help he could get his video to work
<jamezz> ponderus
<pine_cone> ah so pool > non-pool in most cases anyway
<pine_cone> hmm
<jamezz> just ponderus
<jamezz> hay pine_cone , you have the pine pi machine right?
<pine_cone> im waiting on heatsink for the pi.. haven't set it up yet
<apc> totally depends. I mean if you have modern hardware or a bunch of machines crunching, pool might not be a good deal
<jamezz> ok
<jamezz> i dont think hardware gets more modern than mine for the next 2-3 months and in every day pockets for a year
<pine_cone> ah I have a new machine but its only crunching when I'm working at it.. other machine is super low power but is crunching solo (but has heaps low RAC..)
<jamezz> XEN that is
<jamezz> lol
<jamezz> this quad core RCA tablet ive turned into a dedi for boinc seems to make me wanna invest into PI for boinc

* Peppernrino crosses fingers
<jamezz> herm , i have 4 machines with modest gpu's
<jamezz> well
<jamezz> 3 machines with 4 modest gpu's
<pine_cone> GPUs use a lot more power than CPU's mostly though
<jamezz> the top end being a nvidia ( MSI ) 750gtx ti
<pine_cone> and only v.limited projects.. so the average RAC on those would be higher right?
<jamezz> same as what Peppernrino trying to get to work in linux
<apc> sure. just depends on what your preferences are, goals, and priorities
<jamezz> then a amd box with an r7 i think , and an nvidia card and quad core A8 cpu
<jamezz> then this laptop and 1 like it
<jamezz> but android seems to be more widely supported than single video card manufactures
<jamezz> kinda like how intel based chipset is limited as fuck
<jamezz> for gpu that is not cpu , dont clown you were going to miss interpret that
<apc> were everyone's glasses really that huge in the 80s?
<jamezz> i might give linux a run for boinc finally inhouse gui vs cloud... im bout to loose my 2 quad core vps's

<jamezz> just 2 machines
<jamezz> the $300/60 day google cloud trial but the boinc/gridcoin tutorial is bunk... says to make 4 x 2 cpu 1.8gb machines and set it @ 80% but thats slow and its low on ram and projects like ram , and 20% cpu wasted so i did 2 x 4 core and 3.8gb ram and can do most projects
<jamezz> 100% cpu
<jamezz> i had it set to 100% on the 4 x 2 core and they bitched dropped them all to single core
<jamezz> upgraded and no issues , was sucking up ram
<jamezz> im almost at 60 days
<jamezz> than 1 vps threw amazon cruching like 1 seti packet every 5 hours running windows , and 1 running linux that likes poem
<jamezz> they suck ass , the free amazom shit
<pine_cone> ah they must do some throttling / load balancing in the background
<pine_cone> is there a free tier for any of them?
<jamezz> amazon , yes ec2 1gb 1 core free for a year can do a windows and a linux instance
<jamezz> and with google its $300 free when you sign up , or 60 days what ever comes first... with opt out at end and well tested.... they halt you and ask if you want to pay or not
<jamezz> and you can cancel
<jamezz> 8 cores 16gb
<jamezz> or no its 8 and 8
<jamezz> i think you can make a single 8 core i didnt think about that

<customminer> Traderman: We're not talking about the team requirement nor magnitude multiplier topics which would definetley cause division within the community, we're talking about a lack of security that's affecting the whole Gridcoin/BOINC community. If users are passionate about projects that do not have SSL encryption enabled, they should take action and request SSL
<customminer> on the individual project's forums. It's not even a permanent change that would occur, projects can be added back into the whitelist.
<traderman> customminer, that is true, but as we can see in the case of Universe, it may not be even up to the admins themselves.
<customminer> Erkan_Yilmaz: Yeah true, whales could potentially move polls one way or another, especially with the unbalanced mag+balance vote weight (issue: https://github.com/gridcoin/Gridcoin-Research/issues/87 ) and the low voting participation within the community. That said, to counter the whales we need to rally the community into participating in polls - if you
<customminer> abstain from voting then complain about your project being removed you can't really complain about the outcome (though you should request SSL implementation to potentially reverse the whitelist status). At the moment, pools do not vote.

<customminer> traderman: The implications? We discussed this in the 4th Gridcoin Community Hangout - the risk of implementing SSL is that the project admin misconfigures the project & experiences some down time. Not using SSL in a BOINC project poses a larger risk to the entire BOINC community. Indeed, some projects may have laws in their country limiting their ability to
<customminer> implement SSL, but only universe@home slightly has this hurdle. I don't think there's legal ramifications that we need to concern ourselves with - requesting SSL support does not make me a criminal.
<customminer> traderman: Besides, how long would you propose to hold off for? Outreach to projects started in April, 5 have still yet to respond - what if there's a more serious issue like a cheater or a hacker distributing malware through their project? IMO, an absent project admin is a massive red flag.
<NeuralMiner> my vote is for the 70/30 split.
<WhitesoxCrypto> Hi gridsters!!
<customminer> WhitesoxCrypto: Hey :)
<customminer> NeuralMiner: Do you think we should create 3 polls? Balance, Mag+Balance, CPID count, with a few options like 1:1, 2:1, 70:30, 90:10 ?
<customminer> Or better yet, balance, mag, cpid count instead of mag+balance poll? Or just the one poll with mag+balance ?
<NeuralMiner> you could. you can still do a CPID count on mag/balance without making it a separate poll though.
<customminer> true
<NeuralMiner> i think a single poll, but count all those things separately to get a good average?
<customminer> You cannot break down mag+balance easily
<NeuralMiner> as long as it's made clear that's what's happening. multiple polls might confuse people.
<NeuralMiner> that's true.
<NeuralMiner> i think CPID is the most important one though.
<traderman> customminer, i'm not talking about legal ramifications for us/you, as we see in the case of Universe, we may be burdening the project admins with this. If they get hacked, that is technically their problem, if a project gets hacked, we can just remove any compromised project immediately
<NeuralMiner> and that's easy.

<vega40k> example
* vega40k cry LOUD
<pocketprotector> hm
<customminer> traderman: Yeah, we are technically imposing SSL on the project admins, but the majority of BOINC projects have SSL already with 0 problems. It's free with LetsEncrypt (fair enough Universe@home has to buy theirs), no BOINC project is currently hosted in a country with banned encryption import/export (like North Korea), It's a pretty low effort change too.
<NeuralMiner> numberfields got it done pretty quick.
<customminer> traderman: You cannot tell if an MITM attack has occured, and we likely wouldn't know about a project hack unless it distributed malware.
yoyo[RKN] has quit [Quit: Rechenkraft.net ... be part of it ...]
<NeuralMiner> i would say the options should be the ones you stated above, as well as leave it the way it is.
<customminer> kl
<customminer> 1:1 being the remain option
<traderman> customminer, my question is:how are we gonna deal with Universe if they say they won't/can't? There are a lot of crunchers on there.
<Peppernrino> neuralminer: /var/log/dist-upgrade/ is empty. lol
<customminer> traderman: They've said they will, but only in November. So I guess if it was voted out, their computation would not be rewarded for at least 3 months. Users crunching their project could migrate if they wish to continue receiving GRC.
<NeuralMiner> Peppernrino, check /var/log/apt/term.log
<NeuralMiner> that's what newer distros use.
<Peppernrino> k
<traderman> customminer: And if they don't migrate cause they liked Universe so much, we loose members?
<vega40k> Peppernrino: what you try to do ?
<Peppernrino> install nvidia drivers for 750ti on ubuntu 14.04.5
<customminer> traderman: Perhaps. We shouldn't be held hostage by a project's current whitelist status though. If users do not want non-SSL projects to leave the whitelist they should complain directly to the affected project's project admin rather than prevent the vote being held. Perhaps if 200 users posted in the universe@home thread it would be given extra funding
<customminer> earlier than November?
<Peppernrino> from what i can see in the log... it's doing that thing where it installs 304.131 as the driver, but 304.20 as nvidia-settings...
<Peppernrino> neither of those are current.
<Peppernrino> install nvidia-current does not do that.
<apc> can you go grab the packages directly, not from repository?

<Peppernrino> vega40k: ubuntu mate is only 16.04.1.... this is ok?
<fkinglag> NO
<fkinglag> ubuntu 16 is NOT OKAY
* fkinglag waits for AMD drivers...
<NeuralMiner> i use 16.
<NeuralMiner> both the nodes run on 16
<fkinglag> if you use AMD GPU that is not new 4xx series then for the love of god avoid Ubuntu 16
<fkinglag> no drivers yet
<Peppernrino> but for nvidia
<Peppernrino> i'll try it
<Peppernrino> i'm gonna rock 14.04.5 on the amd boxes if i can
<Peppernrino> :)
<Peppernrino> *bodhi
<Combined2857> fkinglag: install kernel 4.7
<Peppernrino> yeah, pussy.
<fkinglag> Combined2857 why
<Combined2857> fkinglag: fixes most bugs with AMD cards
<Emptybeerbottle> 02.09.16 is better.
<fkinglag> Combined2857 nope
<Combined2857> have you tried it ?
<fkinglag> there is NO support for AMD drivers on ubuntu16
<fkinglag> regardless of kernel
<Combined2857> lol what ?
<fkinglag> what, Combined2857? have you tried?
<fkinglag> I certainly have
<Combined2857> I run mint 18 with AMD and it runs perfectly
<fkinglag> only thing available is AMD microcode shits
<fkinglag> linux proprietary is what you're using Combined2857?
<Combined2857> no dude the radeon open source driver
<fkinglag> that's not what I mean
<fkinglag> proprietary got removed from Ubuntu16 repository
<fkinglag> leaving people with GPU with no support
<fkinglag> for fully utilizing
<Combined2857> i never used the fgrlx or how the hell was called
<fkinglag> man the fuck up them ;)
<Peppernrino> 14.04.2 kenel is nearing end of life...
<fkinglag> fuck yo open source radeon drivers
<Combined2857> no open source driver works perfectly
<fkinglag> yes yes I know how well it works
<fkinglag> but it may not work fully to your GPU specifications for all we know
* Peppernrino writes his own drivers
<fkinglag> depends on the GPU I can imagine
<fkinglag> does radeon open source come with amdconfig Combined2857?
<Combined2857> fkinglag: well you dont have another choice in ubuntu 16
<fkinglag> that's what you use to overclock
<fkinglag> and set clocks
<fkinglag> so then avoid Ubuntu 16
<fkinglag> fuck being without the right drivers, yo
* Peppernrino needs cuda
<fkinglag> I've had plenty of fglrx headaches and enough to know how to workaround them
<Combined2857> thats AMD's fault you know not ubuntu's
<fkinglag> Combined2857 no? It's both their collective faults :P
<fkinglag> mostly AMDs
<Peppernrino> AMDs nuts
<Combined2857> how;s ubuntu;s fault ?
<fkinglag> ur nuts
<Peppernrino> ;_;
<Combined2857> what can they do if AMD does not create a driver for their GPU?
mrarturas has joined #gridcoin
<fkinglag> Combined2857: ubuntu couldn't use the drivers probably, and so they just went lazy and removed the support
<Peppernrino> i have a team of asians in the basement
<fkinglag> due to them upgrading to some new fucking xserver or some shit
<Combined2857> fkinglag: the drivers were shit
<fkinglag> how?
<fkinglag> I upgrade from ubuntu 14 to 15 and my drivers still worked..
<Combined2857> i loaded the drivers and my laptop couldn't suspend, when I went back to open source drivers it did
<fkinglag> infact xserver fixed lots of issues I was having after upgrading
<Peppernrino> oh
<fkinglag> some issues that I blamed AMD for
<fkinglag> which were actually xserver's fault
<Combined2857> open source drivers are better than the proprietary lol
<fkinglag> you didn't do it right then Combined2857 :P
<fkinglag> don't blame AMD
<fkinglag> blame yourself
<fkinglag> a computer is only as smart as it's user
<Combined2857> No i dont blame myself, I used the software center to select the proprietary drivers and they did not work correctly
<Peppernrino> 15 is good?
<fkinglag> Combined2857 that is the EZ mode to install shit you have no knowledge about
<fkinglag> you didn't even read anything
<fkinglag> you just clicked shit
<fkinglag> so blame yourself
<Combined2857> yes I clicked shit and that shit should work so I don't blame myself
<fkinglag> lol
<fkinglag> that's an excuse
<Combined2857> amd should just contribute to the open source driver and not try to create proprietary things that do not work
<fkinglag> you're unexcused from claiming ignorance Combined2857
<Peppernrino> put on your shitclickers and click some shit..
<Peppernrino> put on your shitclickers and click some shit.....
<Peppernrino> put on your shitclickers and click some shit.....
<fkinglag> and yes AMD could be doing more for FOSS drivers
<fkinglag> can't bash AMD for your own ignorance
<fkinglag> easy to throw AMD under the bus
<Combined2857> I won't sit down for hours to read about how to get my laptop to work with their silly proprietary drivers, I just choose open source and they work perfectly, if you want towaste your life trying to fix things that they halfbuilt then be my guest im not that stupid
<fkinglag> everything works after I did it right, I learned how to do it, wouldn't say ot
<fkinglag> it's a waste of my time
<fkinglag> especially when I can use it to help others
