I have a daemon with a block in the wantlist for many minutes
<fiatjaf>
why can't it download the block?
<fiatjaf>
I have the block in another machine, although both are not directly connected
<fiatjaf>
will the wanting daemon ever give up?
<Swedneck>
stebalien: many small files

<voker57>
fiatjaf: no
<voker57>
problem might be connection manager killing your connection, it will eventually reestablish in that case
<fiatjaf>
killing what connection?
<fiatjaf>
I have a lot of connections open
<voker57>
killing connection to that another machine
<voker57>
in my experience that's very often problem when downloading large data sets with only one provider
<voker57>
connection manager does not discriminate, so often he severs the connection and puts timeout on re-establishing it
<fiatjaf>
makes sense
<fiatjaf>
although the dataset is small and it hasn't even begun downloading it
<fiatjaf>
I'll try again
<fiatjaf>
but it won't really ever give up?
joocain2 has quit [Ping timeout: 256 seconds]
<fiatjaf>
what if the object it is trying to download doesn't exist?
<voker57>
it's impossible to prove it does not exist
<fiatjaf>
how can I make it stop trying manually?
<voker57>
kill process/whatever created this wantlist
<fiatjaf>
oh
<fiatjaf>
wow
<fiatjaf>
makes perfect sense

is there a list of CID ?
<aLeSD_>
for example I'd like to access the iso of Ubuntu 18.04 is there a way to find out it's CID ?
<aLeSD_>
is it possible to find out a CID by the MD5SUMS or SHA1SUMS or SHA256SUMA ?
<Swedneck>
someone could easily make an index of that stuff
<aLeSD_>
is it possible to find out a CID by the MD5SUMS or SHA1SUMS or SHA256SUMA ? ?
<aLeSD_>
ops
<Swedneck>
you just need to have the file and run `ipfs add --only-hash` on it, then list that hash somewhere
<aLeSD_>
Swedneck, will ipfs substitute torrent network ?
<Swedneck>
it could, probably not for a while though

i'm not a good person to ask, i only use the terminal for ipfs
<Swedneck>
check out "ipfs desktop" and "siderus orion" though

iirc those are the best GUIs
<voker57>
fiatjaf: sure they will. you can sidestep the process with `ipfs swarm connect`

@swedneck: for many small files, badger is probably better. Unfortunately, it's still experimental for a reason so caviat emptor (memory issues...). Personally, I have a 10GiB badger repo that's working just fine.
<Swedneck>
well my use case is serving the fdroid repo, which means updating it often
<Swedneck>
currenctly that's just not feasible, since it takes literal hours to do, and it doesn't remember files it has added previously
ddahl has joined #ipfs
<stebalien>
@swedneck: not sure if badger will change that. Personally, I'd recommend using MFS (`ipfs files`) to edit the directory within IPFS.
<Swedneck>
i've already been recommended that but there's no documentation on it
<Swedneck>
i don't even know how to add files with that
<stebalien>
(a) add the file to IPFS and (b) run `ipfs files cp /ipfs/HashOfFile /path/to/target/mfs/location/of/file`
<Swedneck>
alright, but how do i make updating faster?
<Swedneck>
only a couple files are going to be changed/updated every time

Only update the changed files. That's why `ipfs files` can be faster, you can copy in the changed files leaving everything else alone.

@swedneck: use IPFS add to add the new files and then `ipfs files cp /ipfs/HashOfNewFIle /path/to/location` to copy it into the repo. Unfortunately, `ipfs add` *still* has to hash everything to see if it has changed. We could play some games with timestamps and extended attributes but that's rather brittle.
<Swedneck>
what's wrong with just checking the last modified date?
<Swedneck>
if the last modified date is later than when it was last added to ipfs, add it. If not, don't re-add it and assume the hash is the same

it'd be nice as an option, otherwise anyone using large amounts of files will just have to make their own script anyways
