anyone else have the impression that gc is so slow, you might as well just `rm -rf /path/to/repo`, and then just repin the data from a fresh repo?

I wouldn't reduce the amount of connections, though. Establishing connections is time consuming and also takes a considerable amount of cpu time for the crypto. While having a connection idle isn't an issue at all.
