<Elvanor> Hello. I installed LibreELEC on my Pi 4. Works great, but I have some issues with RetroArch
<Elvanor> First, can someone confirm that to add cores to RA, you should do that via the Kodi interface? as add-ons?
<pragmaticenigma> Elvanor, you might also need to reach out to the RetroArch community. I can't say that I've seen interfaces for managing the hardware included with LibreElec
<Elvanor> pragmaticenigma: what do you mean, the hardware?
<Elvanor> LibreELEC (via Kodi addons) allow you to install the cores
<Elvanor> and other parts of RetroArch
<Elvanor> but I cannot do that directly in RA, and unfortunately, quite a lot of the cores that I can install in Kodi are broken :(
<Elvanor> and some are absent
<pragmaticenigma> I think you mean modules... Cores to me means CPU cores
<pragmaticenigma> so I thought you were trying to allocate system resources
<Elvanor> ok. RA terminology is core
<Elvanor> so I used this term
<Elvanor> but they are like modules yes, they provide support for a given architecture
<Elvanor> For exemple you have a SNES core, a Genesis core, etc.
<pragmaticenigma> yeah... for someone not familiar with that application, it's a poor choice in terms on their part
<pragmaticenigma> I would guess that you might have to reach out to their side of the equation though. Random guess is they might say LibreElec wasn't a targetted platform
kobbra has joined #libreelec
<Elvanor> well, I think this is more on the side of LibreELEC, since the cores are probably built for LibreELEC and packaged as Kodi add-ons
<Elvanor> I can ask RA though, sure
<kobbra> Hi guys! who is maintaining the docker addon?
<pragmaticenigma> LibreElec does nothing for AddOns... those are the same ones provided by the main KODI repos
<pragmaticenigma> kobbra, doubt it's someone monitoring this channel
<pragmaticenigma> kobbra, but if you go into the add on's info screen, you will see the name of the mainting group
<kobbra> pragmaticenigma that is a very good point :P
<kobbra> pragmaticenigma it says Team LibreElec :)
lrusak has quit [Ping timeout: 258 seconds]
<kobbra> im trying to find it on github but doesnt seem to be public or im an idiot... nr is very possible :)
gouchi has joined #libreelec
<Elvanor> pragmaticenigma: no, those are in a LibreELEC Kodi repos
<pragmaticenigma> kobbra, Thus might be the source, but I have no idea: https://github.com/ToKe79/retroarch-kodi-addon-LibreELEC
<Elvanor> the RA cores
<Elvanor> not in a "mainstream" Kodi repos
<asdf28> Elvanor: are you using a fork of libreelec?
<asdf28> it doesn't come with retroarch, does it?
shibboleth has joined #libreelec
<Elvanor> asdf28: no, official LibreELEC image
<Elvanor> out of the box
<Elvanor> and I just installed RA on it (again as a Kodi add-on)
<Elvanor> this part works well
<asdf28> <disclaimer lang="en">This is an unofficial add-on. Please don't ask for support in LibreELEC or Lakka forums / irc channels.</disclaimer>
<asdf28> you have violated the terms of service! :->
<asdf28> grrr
<Elvanor> ha...
<Elvanor> Did not pay attention to this ^^
<Elvanor> Is there somewhere I could ask for help or at least news?
<asdf28> i honestly haven't heard about this until now
<asdf28> i knew about the game-player addon
<asdf28> that relied on standalone retroarch cores, afaik
<asdf28> is this a new add-on?
<asdf28> if it's the one that pragmaticenigma has linked, it says in the readme that it's built for S905 box devices
<asdf28> which could explain why some of the cores are broken for you
<asdf28> but again, no experience with this
<Elvanor> by gameplayer, you mean the integrated libretro Kodi player?
<asdf28> if this is the source of the addon, your source for help should be #lakka
<asdf28> because it was made by a lakka developer
<asdf28> where did you get the addon from?
<Elvanor> Which one?
<Elvanor> The RA one?
<asdf28> yes
<Elvanor> Let me check, but I am pretty sure it is from the LibreELEC add ons repos
<Elvanor> let me check (going to my Pi 4)
<asdf28> i'm just wondering because i would have loved such an addon, but i newer saw it before
<Elvanor> so it is in the game-starter repos
<Elvanor> it's not the LibreELEC one apparently
<Elvanor> Bite your Idols! 3.0.0
nabakolu has joined #libreelec
<Elvanor> (indeed, I forgot, but I had to add this repos to my install first)
<asdf28> oh, i see
<Elvanor> I had totally forgotten about that
<Elvanor> BUT
<Elvanor> the cores themselves are NOT on that repos
<asdf28> well, the thing is
<asdf28> some of the more advanced retroarch cores are compiled with specific options for specific boards
<asdf28> so this could be the problem
lrusak has joined #libreelec
<asdf28> depending on how the cores are built
<Elvanor> I think I may understand what's going on
<Elvanor> let me check, but I think I installed cores that are only planned for retroplayer
<asdf28> for example, i have a S905 tv box, when i tried loading a 3D emulator core that's built for an RPI4, it would crash
<Elvanor> (retroplayer unfortunately has some blockers for me, so I cannot use it)
<Elvanor> yet at least
<Elvanor> else I would prefer to use it and stay entirely within the Kodi environment
<asdf28> 2D cores are mostly fine but 3D cores can be problematic
<Elvanor> asdf28: I have issues with 2D cores :-)
<asdf28> if you download something like lakka, your advantage is that it
<asdf28> that it's a customized build for your device
<asdf28> with all cores compiled specifically for it
<asdf28> okay, but some do work?
<Elvanor> yes
<Elvanor> basically right now what does not work is Scummvm core
<Elvanor> and also i need latest MAME core
<Elvanor> and it seems to be absent on retroplayer (on the libreelec addons)
<asdf28> you could try the following
<Elvanor> going back to my Pi 4. I'll check where the cores come from (which repos)
<Elvanor> back in a sec
<asdf28> if these cores are equivalent to retroarch cores, you could download lakka for the RPI4
<asdf28> then extract the cores from there and put it on your libreelec system
<asdf28> i'd try that to make sure that the cores are not build for an incompatible platform
<Elvanor> so I confirm
<Elvanor> the cores are from LibreELEC repos
<Elvanor> and they are probably only intended for use with retroplayer
<asdf28> yes, but were they built for your specific device? this is the question
<Elvanor> but, *some* of them work with RA
<Elvanor> asdf28: well if they work at all, I guess yes
<Elvanor> I mean it's not like they were built for x86
<asdf28> yes
<Elvanor> but indeed, for the cores that dont work, I get unresolved symbols
<Elvanor> on the logs
<asdf28> but as i said, an RPI4 is an ARM64 device
<asdf28> my S905 box is too
<Elvanor> which is what I said
<Elvanor> so the cores are clearly arm64
<asdf28> but i couldn't play some cores that were compiled for an RPI4
<Elvanor> ok
<Elvanor> I see what you mean
<Elvanor> it's not just the arch
<asdf28> because they don't use the same graphics processor
<Elvanor> but also other things on the device
<Elvanor> What I *think* I should have done
<asdf28> and some cores are compiled with specific graphics features that are device specific
<Elvanor> is install the cores as described on this page https://github.com/bite-your-idols/Gamestarter
<Elvanor> and not via LibreELEC / Kodi addon
<Elvanor> Before launching the addon, you can download full Lakka core package (RPi/Generic) in settings window.
<Elvanor> this is what's written on the page
<asdf28> hmm
<asdf28> okay, it has precompiled cores for the rpi4
<Elvanor> ha, good that you gave me the link
<Elvanor> because it;s not on the page
<asdf28> but i don't know this addon and how it determines which core to download
<Elvanor> how did you find it
<asdf28> i just clicked through the github page that you linked
<chewitt> LE binary add-ons are packaged for Kodi/Retroplayer, and may not work with the Gamestarter stuff
<Elvanor> and these are for Rpi2/3
<Elvanor> chewitt: yes, exactly
<Elvanor> this is the issue I have
<Elvanor> Just realized that now
<chewitt> I'd expect the emultator cores to be packaged within Gamestarter
<chewitt> Bite Your Idols has a support thread in the forums, best to ask there
<Elvanor> there is a problem though, I dont see any current MAME core though :(
<Elvanor> in their repos
<Elvanor> and I need this
<Elvanor> But, yes now I know where to ask for help
<Elvanor> (It's actually a real mess: the retrolib core for Kodi are installed in a different directory BUT symlinks are created in the RA directory (!)
<Elvanor> cores*
<Elvanor> I'll try now with the gamestarter scummvm core for instance, to see if it works
<Elvanor> in RA
<mack-> Elvanor: I decided to just wait a few version revisions before I try the gaming in Libreelec. I have a separate Pi for retroarch, lol.
<Elvanor> I understand. I decided to dive in right away when I got my Pi4, though
<mack-> but, by all means continue on with that you're doing. Find those bugs and improve the UX for late adopters :)
<Elvanor> I actually already made a *lot* of progress
<Elvanor> most of my findins I wrote there
<chewitt> at one point the creator of that Gamestarter image was asking to upstream it into our repo
<chewitt> but it always looked a bit hacky, so we suggested it remained as a community image
<Elvanor> chewitt: well, it';s still very useful
<Elvanor> in my opinion, it works better now that retroplayer
<Elvanor> chewitt: I confirm that cores downloaded from the gamestarter repos work (when the same ones as LE binary addons, did not)
<Elvanor> so very good to know
<Elvanor> I solved 1 of my two issues, as I now have a working scummvm core
<Elvanor> But I still have the issue that I need a current MAME core. and they dont have that one as well :(
<Elvanor> but again - now I know where to go for support.
<Elvanor> Thanks everyone for the help.
