<asdf28>
can someone explain why the kernel modules are located in /usr/lib/kernel-overlays/ in LibreElec, compared to /lib/modules/ on a generic linux system?

i'm having a strange issue where i changed the linux version in the linux kernel package from 5.9.11 to 5.8, and when i boot the system no modules are loaded at all
<asdf28>
they are still there in /usr/lib/kernel-overlays, but when i try to load them manually, it says invalid module format
<asdf28>
no, it actually says "Unknown symbol in module"
<asdf28>
it seems as if there's a mismatch between the kernel and module versions, but how can this happen with in-tree modules?

Because the kernel packaged is the kernel intended to be used. not changed... if you desire different kernels, you probably should be running a raspbian or some other linux distro designed for the Rpi and install kodi separately

pragmaticenigma: thanks. in some rare cases, it makes sense though if something breaks on a particular device with a newer kernel
<pragmaticenigma>
asdf28: No, it doesn't make sense to me. The project's purpose is to release an environment with just enough core to run KODI. If you are finding something that breaks, you should submit a bug report or come here for help troubleshooting

<pragmaticenigma>
and if you need to test regression, step down a version of KODI... don't try to rollback individual components
<pragmaticenigma>
sorry, step down a version of LibreElec

<chewitt>
asdf28 we use a system of overlay dirs (fancy symlinking) to allow different sets of dvb drivers to be used (user selected)
<chewitt>
if you clean build with an updated/different kernel this should be handled fine within the build system
<chewitt>
if you manually copy only the KERNEL file to /flash .. it won't match additional driver/modules in SYSTEM
<chewitt>
if you haven't done full rebuild (clean build) .. do that first

oh.. it's this kind of folder that can mix preinstalled content and new content from /storage?
<asdf28>
i was using a previous build of LE from git, from october i think, that had kernel 5.8 as a default
<asdf28>
but the current version does not play well with it
<asdf28>
5.9 and 5.10 work so it's not a big deal
<asdf28>
i just wanted to test if some minor problems would disappear when going back to the older kernel
