<Strykar>
ssh isn't starting on a fresh install of LE on an Odroid C2, the web interface starts
<Strykar>
I've reinstalled twice, no change. if it makes any difference, same issue on coreelec :/
<davu>
Did you enabled it at the LE Settings->services after installation?
<Strykar>
davu: is that via the web interface? its a headless install
<davu>
LibreELEC is not meant to be used headless
<davu>
and no, it's not done via the webinterface
<davu>
what sense does a mediacenter (what Kodi is) make if you run it headless?
<Strykar>
it's headless atm in my room, the tv is in the living room. sec, reinstalling LE
<Strykar>
I could connect a monitor to it
<davu>
that doesn't answer my question. What sense does that make? How do you connect your TV?
<Strykar>
I was hoping to move the SBC to the tv after setting it up here
<davu>
and be aware that the LE version you are using for Ordroid is no longer supported. As I guess you are using LE 9.0.2 which uses Kodi 18.2 and therefore it's outdated
<davu>
but now it makes sense....LE uses an installation wizard which asks for enabling SSH during first run
<davu>
So you never saw that if you try to install it without a monitor connected to it
<davu>
And again...it doesn't make sense to install a mediacenter without a monitor connected to it ;)

<Strykar>
finally!
<Strykar>
so is it cool to ask CoreELEC Qs in here?
<pragmaticenigma>
depends
<Strykar>
just realized I didn't reinstall core to LE whilst trying to get ssh working
<pragmaticenigma>
but honestly, this is for LibreElec... CoreElec is a different build and they do have their own support forum. A better place to find CoreElec specific help
<Strykar>
yea im registering on their forum now, but I prefer IRC and they dont even have a channel :/
<Strykar>
what's the reason there isn't an LE 9.2.6 release for the Odroid C2?
<pragmaticenigma>
just different focuses... the primary difference is the Amlogic hardware... RPi doesn't have it, Odroids do
<Strykar>
I know they're different hardware, I'm wondering why its lagging behind by so much, I thought I read the LE devs had hardkernel SBCs

<asdf28>
Strykar: the odoid c2 has an amlogic S905 chip, right?
<asdf28>
as such, it should be supported by libreelec
<asdf28>
it's just not official yet
<asdf28>
but there should be plenty of inofficial builds for this chip that you can try
<thresh>
Strykar, iirc the main problem was the lack of new kernels for odroid c2
<chewitt>
has a nasty audio glitch tho, mind your tweeters
<chewitt>
all is sonically fab until machine-gun-noise kicks in :)
<chewitt>
there's a buffer underrun to be found somewhere
<chewitt>
also the usual vdec issues to be fixed..
<chewitt>
support for the 3.14 vendor kernel ended with LE 9.0, hence no LE 9.2 image
<chewitt>
the current issue is not lack of kernels, but lack of competent developers taking an interest in the mainline kernel
<chewitt>
overall performance of modern kernels is great, but the media stuff is behind
ghostcube has quit [Quit: Verlassend]

<Strykar>
chewitt: thanks for clearing that up.. the kernel lagging mainline has plagued this board since release. what's a recommended SBC with good LE support and a recent kernel? I'm rethinking upgrading to a C4 unless that's well supported
<chewitt>
C4 has better audio, but otherwise the same challenges as the C2
<chewitt>
from a mainline perspective
<Strykar>
good ol Amlogic eh
<chewitt>
CE would be an option there tho
<Ommand>
is rpi not just the benchmark>
<Strykar>
Ommand: for LE maybe, not as a performance SBC
<Ommand>
we are talking about for LE use here though, aren't we?
<chewitt>
RPi4 will be the one to beat for support, the engagement from pi foundation is (as always) in a different league to other vendors
<chewitt>
but not smooth sailing in the immediate future due to the GBM/V4L2 transition
<chewitt>
RPi4 LE10 is currently a regression over LE9.2
<chewitt>
that will change, but we're not there yet
<chewitt>
there is currently about 5000% more effort going into RPi4 than anything else (effort in general, not just LE effort)
<Strykar>
what kernels are the RPi3B+ and 4 running on LE
<chewitt>
9.2 = 4.19
<chewitt>
10 = 5.10+
<Strykar>
so the 4'd be a solid buy
<chewitt>
should be 5.10++++ given the amount of not-yet-upstream code
<chewitt>
but there is a huge upstreaming effort
<chewitt>
this time around pi foundation can afford to pay people to do it all properly :)
<pragmaticenigma>
Rpi4 has it's hardware issues, some resolved. Active cooling, or large heat syncs are highly recommended for media playback
<Strykar>
does Hardkernel only supply LE with boards and nothing else?
<Strykar>
pragmaticenigma: good to know, I always get a metal case as a heatsink, even my C2 sits in one
<pragmaticenigma>
I'm still running Pi2's here... haven't seen much reason to upgrade at the moment, though it has been tempting
<Strykar>
the 2GB RPi4 is even cheaper than what the C2 was for years ago, seems really tempting
<pragmaticenigma>
think I would recommend the 4 or or higher versions though, 4k requires some muscle
<pragmaticenigma>
*4GB
<Strykar>
orly?
<Strykar>
the 8GB prices OTOH.. straight up twice that of the 2GB
<chewitt>
Strykar what do you expect HK to supply LE with?
<pragmaticenigma>
I think he's talking about reference boards to develop with... which I would be surprised if anyone did that
<chewitt>
our testing shows RPi4 2G is the minimum; stats show 4GB to be the most popular
<chewitt>
HK are rubbish at sending me samples in advance, but have always been happy to send me anything I asked for
<Strykar>
chewitt: I see
<chewitt>
I have quite a few HK boards as a result
<chewitt>
I seem to do most of their upstreaming on Amlogic these days .. largely as i'm too impatient to wait for them to do it
<chewitt>
also made possible because adding board support is largely a copy/paste device-tree exercise these days
<chewitt>
the upstream codebase is very well structured and simple to work with
<chewitt>
it's just weak on media capabilities
<Strykar>
which to me seems weird, the C2 supported 4K@60 back when it came out, I kinda expected the opposite for amlogic socs moving forward
pyrodex has joined #libreelec
<chewitt>
there is maybe ~5% code inheritance between the vendor kernel and current mainline kernel
<chewitt>
and that's rounding up
<chewitt>
for an S905 device the main issue to a usable board right now is an audio glitch
<Strykar>
so when you say "the upstream codebase is very well structured and simple to work with"..
<chewitt>
it's been completely re-written around modern kernel frameworks
<chewitt>
the vendor 3.14 kernel is functional but fcuking horrid code
<chewitt>
poorly documented and full of magic values
<chewitt>
and it predates most of the kernel frameworks for media support, so it's all Amlogic homebrew
<chewitt>
once you start to "fix" things in it, you quickly end up down a rabbit hole where fixing one thing breaks another
<chewitt>
and then you realise the only true fix requires you to refactor a huge chunk of code
<chewitt>
that effort is best directed towards building new code, not fixing old stuff
<Strykar>
how's Amlogic's code for the C4, that was a recent release
<chewitt>
it has 85% of the same code from the 3.14 kernel forward ported to Linux 4.9 and with more tacked on to deal with newer audio hardware and other capabilities
<Strykar>
joy
<chewitt>
quality probably improved a bit since it was an evolution of proven code, but it's still rather fugly
