<ssvb>
Wizzup_: looks cool, have you tried connecting the SPI flash chip to it?
<Wizzup_>
No, I was unable to locate it. :)
<Wizzup_>
That'll be the next step on another day
<ssvb>
Wizzup_: hmm, unable to locate?
<Wizzup_>
Someone said he had NOR flash (those winbond ones), but he didn't answer me when I asked on IRC. I ordered them myself as well, but those won't arrive for another week.
<ssvb>
Wizzup_: I see
ninolein has quit [Ping timeout: 250 seconds]
<ssvb>
Wizzup_: have you ordered just SOIC-8 chips, or modules with pin headers?
<ssvb>
you can just compile it, then switch your board into FEL mode (by not having a bootable SD card or pressing FEL button) and run "./sunxi-fel spiflash-info" to see if it can talk to the SPI flash chip
<ssvb>
this is based on a very old branch, but I will post a more complete cleaned up patch set to the mailing list soon
<ssvb>
BTW, the write protect pin is not used by default and you can ignore it, the SPI flash chip needs to be switched into a special mode where it respects the WP pin to make use of it
<ssvb>
the firmware in the SPI flash may enable write protection at boot time, so that later on you can't easily overwrite it from linux
<Wizzup_>
That is good to know. Thank you.

Having the right config seems always like a bit of magic for any ARM based system, so arm64 decided to provide a defconfig that supports all boards at least in a basic fashion

no pinctrl builded
<montjoie>
perhaps related to the warning for PINCTRL_SUN50I_A64
<apritzel>
montjoie: ah yes, did you use the a64-v5 branch? The fix is to add "select PINCTRL
<apritzel>
to arch/arm64/Kconfig.platforms just before the PINCTRL_SUN50I_A64
<montjoie>
I use the a64-v5, not the good one ?
<apritzel>
yes, that's the right one
<apritzel>
but you didn't use defconfig, did you?
<montjoie>
:)
<apritzel>
this bug is part of my mission to teach people of defconfig ;-)
<montjoie>
but clearly something is missing, since I cannot even see pinctrl via menuconfig
<apritzel>
yeah, because of the missing symbol
<apritzel>
montjoie: does adding "select PINCTRL" in arch/arm64/Kconfig.platforms fix it for you?
<montjoie>
yes it boots thanks, now come the HARD part, finding a correct hostname for it:)
<apritzel>
oh yes ;-) Do you have a scheme in place, like names from a movie or a book?

Wizzup_, did you use stranded wire to solder to the NAND socket? I always use solid when doing work like that. Less risk of a little strand getting loose and shorting things.
<Wizzup_>
willmore: I tried to find thin wires that were solid
<Wizzup_>
(if that answers your question ;-)
<willmore>
Wizzup_, Did you succeed?
<willmore>
:)
<willmore>
Hard to tell from the pic, looks stranded.
<willmore>
I have found that soldering stuff like that benefits from a ton of flux. Makes the surface tension of the solder really high so it doesn't tend to blob together.
<willmore>
Another trick is to glue the wires in place before soldering. That way you have hands free and don't have to worry about jiggling them at the wrong time.
<willmore>
And you glued them as a strain relief, good.
<willmore>
I wonder if those pins are available on the header on the Opi1.
<willmore>
Looks like the only difference between the FV and the BV parts is the clock speed of the QSPI. FV are better. I got mine for an esp8266 project and speed won't be critical there.
<Wizzup_>
willmore: yes! they work fine
<Wizzup_>
used flux as well
<Wizzup_>
I tested all of them separately using gpio and a multimeter
