There are 2 new OPi boards using the H5: the OPi Zero H5 and the OPi Zero2 H5. These seem to be basic variations of the original devices. Do these devices warrant the creation of their own pages, or would they be listed under "variations"?

<RichardG867>
...since when is there a dual-ethernet OPi??
<KotCzarny>
since never
<KotCzarny>
it's just usb chip
<RichardG867>
yeah
<RichardG867>
probably only useful as a 10/100 packet tap
<KotCzarny>
or for wan <100mit
<KotCzarny>
*mbit
<RichardG867>
if I wanted to make a router with 1 integrated 10/100 and 1 USB 10/100, I have a slim desktop with a laptop AMD chip and laptop power supply that can route a lot more than the H2
<KotCzarny>
sure, does it run on 2watt?
bonbons has joined #linux-sunxi
<RichardG867>
that's where the OPi wins pretty much
<KotCzarny>
allwinner isnt about high performance
<RichardG867>
you know what, I may end up doing something similar, since I have a lite and a RTL8152 USB adapter.
<KotCzarny>
not to mention its tiny
<RichardG867>
my home network runs on interconnected TP-links running openwrt, which work, but have no storage or expansion to do bandwidth monitoring and some other more complex stuff
<KotCzarny>
that 2 eth opi is nice because nothings hangs around
<miasma>
RichardG867: your tp-link devices probably have usb for usb flash media
<KotCzarny>
and h3/h2+ is supported quite well by linux-sunxu=i
<RichardG867>
they don't
<miasma>
ok
<RichardG867>
they're the 841/740 family which has tap points for USB but it involves reaching SMD components and adding your own power supply.
<RichardG867>
the new OPi also got me wondering, it claims to have 16MB SPI, could a minimal kernel and some routing utilities in the initramfs fit in that
<KotCzarny>
probably
<KotCzarny>
cheap enough to play with it
<miasma>
definitely. iirc a minimal kernel (without going into embedded menuconfig settings) might be around 3-4 megs
<miasma>
initramfs with busybox ~ 300-400 kB
<KotCzarny>
miasma: with xz compression expect less
<miasma>
yes
<lurchi_>
RichardG867: 16 M*Bit* or *Byte*?
<RichardG867>
it just says 16MB
<KotCzarny>
my full blown droid kernel is 3M
<miasma>
i use faster compression as its faster to boot :)
<lurchi_>
then its likely mbit (most storage chips are specified in Bit)
<RichardG867>
keep in mind: my tp-link devices have 4 MB flash
<KotCzarny>
how often do you boot?
<KotCzarny>
;)
<RichardG867>
and run full blown openwrt with a couple hundred KB to spare.
<KotCzarny>
2-5s doesnt make a difference
premoboss has joined #linux-sunxi
<miasma>
RichardG867: we'd appreciate any more information about the SPI flash size. it can be 16 MBit or 16 MBytes. we can't be sure until someone buys and tests it :)OH
<KotCzarny>
i think willmore ordered it
premoboss has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<RichardG867>
actually, perfect idea
premoboss has joined #linux-sunxi
<RichardG867>
someone should get openwrt on it eventually.
<KotCzarny>
quite easy with 16MB and mainline kernel/uboot
<RichardG867>
(OT: I also have the "zsun" wireless card reader that ironically has the same soc, 2x the RAM and 4x the flash of those tp-link routers.)
<RichardG867>
yes it would be a quite capable openwrt system...
<RichardG867>
except for the 8189
<RichardG867>
how good is that for AP
<KotCzarny>
not good
lurchi_ is now known as lurchi__
<miasma>
RichardG867: not sure where you're located but i'm pretty sure that most new tp-link boxes are more efficient in routing than the opi board. they even have native gigabit switches
<miasma>
and not that expensive
<avph>
so is there any guide to have kernel+initrd on SPI flash with sunxi?
<avph>
so somehow you need a FS on the flash righT?
<miasma>
i odn't have sunxi boards with spi flash, but on openwrt boards it's not that different from other storage formats
<RichardG867>
my only openwrt experience is with MIPS devices and those pretty much use u-boot across the board.
<miasma>
openwrt does it a bit differently because the router boards might require special partitions for firmware and they use overlay/unionfs for factory reset
