<DonkeyHotei> u-boot after 2017.11 does not support building with gcc < 6.0
<DonkeyHotei> if you are building on ubuntu 14.04, that's pretty inconvenient
<DonkeyHotei> are there any sunxi-meaningful changes after 2017.11 yet?
<anarsoul|2> DonkeyHotei: 14.04 was released 3.5 years ago, why do you still use it?
<apritzel> anarsoul|2: the last systemd free Ubuntu?
<anarsoul|2> apritzel: I see
<apritzel> but yeah, the software in there is getting old, GCC being just one example
<pmpp> or because it usually take 3 years to fix bugs ? 6 months is not too much for enjoying stable
<anarsoul|2> pmpp: I'm using archlinux that uses rolling release model, and I haven't had any major issues for years
<DonkeyHotei> anarsoul|2: i'm skipping 16.04 and waiting to see if 18.04 is any better
<DonkeyHotei> systemd is yuck
<lurchi_> compared to upstart ...
<DonkeyHotei> 14.04 already has bits and pieces of it
<pmpp> DonkeyHotei: mint 18.3 is beginning to look like an os
<anarsoul|2> iirc ubuntu switched to gnome in 17.10
<DonkeyHotei> it would be great if they picked up the glue packages from devuan for 18.10
<DonkeyHotei> if not for ubuntu then for xubuntu etc.
<lurchi_> if you wan't a totally broken system, then go for devuan ...
<DonkeyHotei> i'm aware
<DonkeyHotei> but 18.10 is almost a year out

<wens> systemd is not going away in ubuntu
<DonkeyHotei> of course not
<DonkeyHotei> but in xubuntu and others, it doesn't have to be required
<DonkeyHotei> unfortunately, due to the common repos, this would be tricky
<wens> after installing, switch to sysvinit-core? that's what I do on Debian anyway
<miasma> how's that related to gcc versions? can't one just install whatever version afterwards if the distro's repositories are outdated
<lurchi_> DonkeyHotei: if you are fine with crappy shell scripts for the init systems, this is clearly doable
<DonkeyHotei> miasma: yes, and installing gcc that's not in the repos is pretty inconvenient
<miasma> how about using it in a chroot?
<DonkeyHotei> why bother?
<miasma> ok

<beeble> getting a toolchain that is current isn't that hard. free electrons and linaro offer prebuild ones and building one yourself with crosstool-ng isn't that hard either. so there are easy solutions for you if you really have to use 3+ year old distribution for development

<bpi> hi there, I'm developing a new product, a home appliance, using allwinner a64 as the brain. Could any one point to me which kernel branch is most usable now? Per my understanding the mainline master still missed some feature, right?

<anarsoul> I'm just using NFS, so no issues with loading modules
<anarsoul> of course, everything essential for booting (mostly networking drivers) is compiled in

<jonkerj> apritzel: my u-boot is 548864 bytes. Don't know if that's too big
<apritzel> jonkerj: yes, that's too big
<jonkerj> if I try to accomplish the same using overlays, it works, so I do not think the resulting FDT is too big to fit
<jonkerj> jay
<jonkerj> the thing is, that I'm not bothered by the size anymore, since I switched to DT overlays
<apritzel> well, there is still a bug
<apritzel> looks like the fdt command is somehow overwriting code
<jonkerj> yeah
<apritzel> jonkerj: if it's not too troublesome for you, I would be grateful if you could quickly test this oneliner and see if that fixes the problem
<jonkerj> I will, but tonight

<apritzel> jonkerj: does that mean that with Thumb2 you still get such a big binary? On a 32-bit machine?
<jonkerj> the binary size is of 2017.11 which seems to have that patch already. It's a 32-bit machine (orange-pi-{plus,pc,one})
<jonkerj> quite easy to see for yourself: make orangepi_plus_defconfig && make && stat u-boot-sunxi-with-spl.bin
<jonkerj> grep grep OVERLAY .config
Pe3ucTop has joined #linux-sunxi
<apritzel> jonkerj: # CONFIG_OF_LIBFDT_OVERLAY is not set ;-)
<jonkerj> yeah, I was mixing up config parameters, but THUMB _is_ set
<jonkerj> does not really matter if Kconfig is patched (which is), THUMB is in affectuated config
Hao has quit [Ping timeout: 264 seconds]
<apritzel> jonkerj: thanks, but indeed I see it as well
<apritzel> jonkerj: which is weird, as we thought we had about half a year until this hits us again
<apritzel> jonkerj: ah wait: this is only u-boot-sunxi-with-spl.bin
<shadeslayer> apritzel: btw your image didn't really boot for me :P
<mripard_> yeah, u-boot-sunxi-with-spl will be larger
<shadeslayer> but I might have done something stupid, idk
<apritzel> not u-boot.bin or u-boot.img, which is still around 350K
<shadeslayer> I need to build my own kernel and uboot and try to make it work with the pinebook rootfs I hav
<shadeslayer> *have
<mripard_> and we won't even compile it successfully now if it's too large
<jonkerj> should I be using u-boot.bin instead? I blindly followed the instructions on the wiki :-)
<apritzel> mripard_: that was what I was just thinking ...
<apritzel> shadeslayer: you mean my latest Pine64 firmware image on my github repo?
<shadeslayer> the one I tried 2 weeks ago
<shadeslayer> yeah
<apritzel> shadeslayer: that is only for the Pine64 (DDR3 DRAM)
<shadeslayer> ahh
<shadeslayer> that might explain it :P
<apritzel> shadeslayer: does not work on anything with LPDDR3
<shadeslayer> ok
jstein has joined #linux-sunxi
<apritzel> shadeslayer: but it's just a matter of a different defconfig, I will try to upload something later tonight
Hao has joined #linux-sunxi
<shadeslayer> apritzel: what'd be more useful for me would be to have binaries I can drop into my sdcard
<shadeslayer> and flash to the boot partitions
<shadeslayer> instead of having a img file
<shadeslayer> I already have a rootfs that I want to make work with mainline
<apritzel> shadeslayer: though that would be more for the Pine64LTS and SoPine, not sure how far you get with the Pinebook
<shadeslayer> I see
<apritzel> shadeslayer: that's what it is already: pure firmware bits
<shadeslayer> we can find out :)
<apritzel> shadeslayer: there is no rootfs or anything, I am not in that business
<shadeslayer> apritzel: no no, I have a rootfs that I want to make work
<apritzel> if your SD card has its first partition at 1MB, you won't overwrite anything
<apritzel> shadeslayer: that's what I am saying: my "image" is just a 600K firmware binary that you dd on an SD card
<shadeslayer> ohhh
<shadeslayer> apritzel: but the kernel?
<shadeslayer> or is it just uboot?
<apritzel> no kernel, just use mainline
<shadeslayer> alrighty
<apritzel> or some recent distribution
<shadeslayer> *nod*
<shadeslayer> I will build my own :)
<apritzel> or that
<shadeslayer> but hooray :D
<apritzel> Ubuntu 17.10 has some Allwinner support, for instance
<shadeslayer> well, I have the setup to build my own kernel, I want to try out icenowy[m]'s branch for the pinebook
<Wizzup> apritzel: btw, -cpu host did indeed fix the problem with kvm
<apritzel> Wizzup: ah, good to know
<shadeslayer> what I need to read up about is how to point uboot to the right partition to load the kernel and everything
Hao has quit [Ping timeout: 265 seconds]
<shadeslayer> because I don't have a serial cable :(
<apritzel> shadeslayer: you could just try the defaults, it might pick it up automatically

Hao has quit [Ping timeout: 272 seconds]
DullTube has quit [Quit: Leaving]
<jonkerj> apritzel: did not really get your (and mripard_'s) point regarding u-boot*.bin: generally you'll need u-boot with SPL on 32bit sunxi, right?
<apritzel> yeah, but the size of u-boot-sunxi-with-spl.bin is a red herring now
<apritzel> jonkerj: since it will be blown up to 504K now
<jonkerj> I could try to disable stuff in u-boot, defconfig probably contains way more than I need
<apritzel> due to the size property in sunxi-u-boot.dtsi, which binman uses to generate the file
<jonkerj> network/usb, for instance
<apritzel> jonkerj: no need, your size is fine
<apritzel> it's actually around 350K
<jonkerj> ah, it's the non-spl part that needs to be the right size
<jonkerj> still curious that 'fdt set .. reg' makes u-boot crash/reset the CPU, though
<jonkerj> it's not size related
<apritzel> yes, we had it overlapping with the saved environment on the (raw) MMC
<apritzel> jonkerj: did you load a DT to $fdt_addr_t? Or did you use U-Boot's ($fdtcontroladdr)? I guess the first ...
<jonkerj> I am using a different variable for the address to load FDT to
<apritzel> $fdt_addr_r, I mean (shall not write spinlock code at the same time ;-)
Hao has joined #linux-sunxi
<jonkerj> 0x49000000, $fdt_addr
<apritzel> jonkerj: and where would that end up then? Maybe it's pointing at some place with U-Boot code in it?
<jonkerj> good question, have not looked at that yet
<jonkerj> but still: when using overlays, I use the same fdt address and the same fdt resize command and achieve the exact same result fdt
<apritzel> 16 MB should be plenty for any DT, though
<jonkerj> I mean, the fdt using overlays is identical to the fdt using 'fdt mknode/set' commands
<apritzel> jonkerj: so it might be a bug in the fdt command then ...
<jonkerj> maybe I'll git-bisect my way through it tonight
<jonkerj> since 2016.(i think 09) did not have this problem and 2017.11 does
