ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. <Lord_Nightmare>
i've bee looking at OPL1 datecodes, and I have a feeling that every opl chip ever produced was made between october and december 1985, on one single production line
<Lord_Nightmare>
and yamaha discontinued production of it after that, probably in favor of the upcoming opl2 which saw wide release with the adlib in 1987
<andlabs>
that just makes me wonder what cuased it to get discontinued quickly
<andlabs>
is there some bug we don't know about?
<Lord_Nightmare>
no idea
<cr1901_modern>
that's... interesting
<cr1901_modern>
and makes me want an OPL1 even more
<andlabs>
honestly I just want MIT-licensed FM cores that are 100% correct
<cr1901_modern>
nuked OPN2 is probably 100% correct or very close to it. Can't help w/ the license tho :P.
<Lord_Nightmare>
everyone calls the y8950 an opl plus adpcm
<Lord_Nightmare>
but did you know the y8950 is actually OLDER than the opl?
<Lord_Nightmare>
that one in particular has a datecode of september 1985
<Lord_Nightmare>
i've never seen any opl chip that old
<andlabs>
lol
<andlabs>
gotta compare the die
<Lord_Nightmare>
ok, i stand corrected
<Lord_Nightmare>
there was a second run of OPL chips
<andlabs>
and I guess I should have clarified what I want: non-licensed or at the very least MIT-licensed or even zlib-licensed netlists
<andlabs>
computer-consumable stuff
<andlabs>
idk
<andlabs>
I'm still amazed people cloned chips back then and yet all that knowledge is somehow gone
<Lord_Nightmare>
and i believe the first run (oct-dec 1985) was commissioned by commodore for the SFX (though a few appear on snk arcade games), and the second run was commissioned by taito for bubble bobble, and was made around april 1986
<Lord_Nightmare>
dee doo doo, do-dee do doo doo dee doo doo-doo, doo...

<cr1901_modern>
Indeed :3. It's sickenly cute.
<Lord_Nightmare>
RIP MTJ though :(
<Lord_Nightmare>
taken too early by kidney cancer
<cr1901_modern>
Ouch :(
<Lord_Nightmare>
if he was still around i'd love to know the story of why popils never saw a nes or pc-engine releae despite being finished
<Lord_Nightmare>
i have a feeling taito flexed at atari and prevented them from releasing it
<Lord_Nightmare>
since the characters were very similar to those mtj designed for bubble bobble
<cr1901_modern>
Rainbow Islands is also sickenly cute
<Lord_Nightmare>
mtj did chack'n pop, bubble bobble, rainbow islands, and volfied
<Lord_Nightmare>
at taito
<Lord_Nightmare>
and i think he did other stuff too
<Lord_Nightmare>
after he left taito he did popils at atari/tengen but it only ever saw a game gear release despite having finished nes/pc-engine/turbografx versions
<Lord_Nightmare>
of which jun amanai, the programmer, still has the prototypes

<andlabs>
now do the main theme of rainbow islands :3
