ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. <Lord_Nightmare>
Foone: the weakness of the original discferret is its slow usb mcu, which is why i think replacing it with an fx2 or stm32 would make things much better
<Lord_Nightmare>
original mcu only runs at usb1.1 speeds
<Lord_Nightmare>
which means it takes multiple disk rotations to transfer the flux data from sram to the host computer before it can advance to the next track or side
<Lord_Nightmare>
this is a problem when dealing with marginal disks where the media will delaminate all over the drive head after a few rotations
<cr1901_modern>
12Mbps isn't enough to stream a whole track ._.?
<Lord_Nightmare>
the fpga can't do full duplex, it can allow fpga to write to sram or usb to read from sram, not both
<Lord_Nightmare>
full duplex was a planned feature but i don't think philpem ever wrote that
<Lord_Nightmare>
i could be wrong
<Lord_Nightmare>
i believe the fpga used has more than enough logic units to handle interleaved sram reads and writes so the usb mcu can read the fpga contents simultaneous to the fpga writing disk data there
<Lord_Nightmare>
but the bottleneck is still the usb speed
<Lord_Nightmare>
I forget whether the discferret's sram is arranged as 256KW or 512KB
<Foone>
kilowatts
<Foone>
it's 512 kilobytes.
<cr1901_modern>
kilowords I assume?
<Foone>
yeah. KW is kilowords, but the memory for the discferret is 512 x 8
<Foone>
in any case, I'm interested in the discferret for compatibility reasons, and if I was starting from scratch to build a floppy imager I wouldn't start from it
<Foone>
so personally I'm not super-interested in how to improve it
<Sarayan>
Plus there's the glasgow if you want to have a swiss knife (some assembly needed) or the applesauce(?) if you don't
<Sarayan>
discferret was a nice idea that didn't really pan out
<Foone>
yup! and I've got the applesauce and I'm on the list for the glasgow
<Foone>
cause I need ALL THE IMAGERS
<Sarayan>
what, kryoflux and catweasel too?
<Foone>
no catweasel yet. they're hard to find
<Sarayan>
yeah
* Sarayan
has no imager, gee
<Sarayan>
not sure what I'd do with it, I may have a couple dozen floppies remaining
<Sarayan>
I do have a 3" drive though :-)
<Foone>
but I definitely want one. and a Copy II PC Option Board, of course
<Foone>
nice! I need to work out a solution for imaging 3" disks
* cr1901_modern
has about 30 DD 5.25" floppies and 20 HD 5.25" floppies. And about 120-150 3.5" floppies.
<Sarayan>
that's what I have. It's interesting that the drive is separate from the controller
<Foone>
interesting! what system is that for?
<Sarayan>
(I have the oric which goes with it too :-)
<Sarayan>
oric 1/atmos
<Sarayan>
I have the oric 1
<Foone>
ahh, neat.
<Sarayan>
I haven't tried to start it in 20 years, so... :-)
<Foone>
I've got a 3" drive that I haven't tested yet, but it's got a standard PC/shugart interface, so possibly I can get it working with a kryoflux or similar
<Sarayan>
the jasmin has a stantard wd chip as a controller, so signals must be the usual
<Sarayan>
but, well, at that point I consider easier to rewrite to oric to run on a fpga that try to make mine boot :-)
<Foone>
I definitely have computers like that
<Foone>
I'm pretty much going to have to fully rebuild from scratch that stupid tube-amp board if I want it to boot
<Foone>
and the Zenith Minisports... good lord. I have like 5 of them and they're all broken, and I kinda doubt I can get even one working by combining them
<Foone>
and don't get me started on getting any VideoFloppy cameras working
<Foone>
getting one of those has been such a long quest that I accidentally interfered with a Lazy Game Reviews episode by making it hard for him to find any cameras on ebay, because I WAS BUYING THEM ALL
<Sarayan>
mwahahahahhaa
<Sarayan>
Sometimes I'm surprised you still have a significant other, you must have chosen each other well
<Sarayan>
I loved the "there's no way I'll touch that" with the hairy keyboard
