ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. I prefer analog catgirls, for the warmer sound

Digital catgirls, the kind that interact with vaxen and/or alphas

re: X68000, the one in the ebay photos is the original model and has SASI. They do have rechargeable cells which you'll want to get out
<protosphere>
SASI isn't really much of a problem once you install the SxSI bootloader thing, I use mine with a SCSI2SD just fine
<protosphere>
I don't think you can have internal SxSI drives on the original model though, only the SCSI-2 models can iirc
<protosphere>
and SASI has no termination power so you have to power the drive/whatever externally
<protosphere>
another catch is that the SASI controller is ID 0 (SCSI models use ID 7) so you have to set your device IDs to take this into account
<protosphere>
that caught me out for a while and i was super confused as to why things weren't working

<protosphere>
there's a floppy disk image you can download to set everything up - note that you *need* this if the machine isn't already setup with the SxSI bootloader. The bootloader is stored in battery-backed SRAM so won't be there if the battery is dead
<protosphere>
you can make the floppies with a regular PC 1.2MB 5.25" drive
<protosphere>
but the original model won't boot via SxSI by default
<cr1901_modern>
(Might also be a catboy of the 4-legged variety, rather than a catgirl. Idk.)
<andlabs>
protosphere: ah good to know that there are modern hard disk solutions
<andlabs>
I do not know what I'm going to do with these yet
<andlabs>
though
<andlabs>
will the battery backed SRAM reset to default when I remove the battery or will it brick the computer?
<protosphere>
It will just boot from floppy again
<protosphere>
default settings as far as I’m aware
<protosphere>
So long as you have a way to make a boot disk it’ll be fine
<protosphere>
ah, the other downside of the original is that it only has 1 MB memory instead of 2 MB that later machines have. You’ll find a bunch of games that need the 2 MB
<protosphere>
Mine had 2 in it which I assume is an expansion board, but I haven’t actually looked yet
<andlabs>
I'll find out the technical specs later
<andlabs>
that toaplan guy does sell a 1MB expansion board so
<andlabs>
first I need to get some actual games for this thing, and I alreayd know which one I'll definitely get, but only because it's the most ridiculous thing ever
