<sorear> Digital catgirls, the kind that interact with vaxen and/or alphas

<protosphere> re: X68000, the one in the ebay photos is the original model and has SASI. They do have rechargeable cells which you'll want to get out
<protosphere> SASI isn't really much of a problem once you install the SxSI bootloader thing, I use mine with a SCSI2SD just fine
<protosphere> I don't think you can have internal SxSI drives on the original model though, only the SCSI-2 models can iirc
<protosphere> and SASI has no termination power so you have to power the drive/whatever externally
<protosphere> another catch is that the SASI controller is ID 0 (SCSI models use ID 7) so you have to set your device IDs to take this into account
<protosphere> that caught me out for a while and i was super confused as to why things weren't working
cr1901_modern has joined ##yamahasynths
<protosphere> there's a floppy disk image you can download to set everything up - note that you *need* this if the machine isn't already setup with the SxSI bootloader. The bootloader is stored in battery-backed SRAM so won't be there if the battery is dead
<protosphere> you can make the floppies with a regular PC 1.2MB 5.25" drive
<protosphere> but the original model won't boot via SxSI by default
<cr1901_modern> sorear: It's not VAX, but it _is_ DEC: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DECtalk#/media/File:DECtalk_DCT01_and_Tink.jpg
<cr1901_modern> (Might also be a catboy of the 4-legged variety, rather than a catgirl. Idk.)
<andlabs> protosphere: ah good to know that there are modern hard disk solutions
<andlabs> I do not know what I'm going to do with these yet
<andlabs> though
<andlabs> will the battery backed SRAM reset to default when I remove the battery or will it brick the computer?
<protosphere> It will just boot from floppy again
<protosphere> default settings as far as I’m aware
<protosphere> So long as you have a way to make a boot disk it’ll be fine
<protosphere> ah, the other downside of the original is that it only has 1 MB memory instead of 2 MB that later machines have. You’ll find a bunch of games that need the 2 MB
<protosphere> Mine had 2 in it which I assume is an expansion board, but I haven’t actually looked yet
<andlabs> I'll find out the technical specs later
<andlabs> that toaplan guy does sell a 1MB expansion board so
<andlabs> first I need to get some actual games for this thing, and I alreayd know which one I'll definitely get, but only because it's the most ridiculous thing ever
<andlabs> that scary looking piece of sheet metal? you shove the mouse in there.
<whitequark> wtf
<andlabs> they had to simulate the arcade controls somehow *shrug*
<protosphere> Doesn’t the mouse also double as a trackball or something
<andlabs> although I think the one in this picture is broken
<andlabs> it definitely does not look right
<andlabs> wait no I guess it is right

<andlabs> hey brits (assuming any are here): what's a good price for a zx spectrum +2?
<Lofty> ...I got pinged because you mentioned "zx" :P
<Lofty> Unfortunately I don't know much about Speccy pricing
<andlabs> heh
<racoon> when they first came out they were ~100 quid
<racoon> i'd say not much more than 60
<racoon> any british tech from that era that isn't acorn has utterly terrible build quality
<racoon> the 80s were austere times
<racoon> even by modern standards the acorn and sinclair stuff was shite
<racoon> uhhh
<racoon> *amstrad and sinclair stuff
<Sarayan> the cpc6128 wasn't so bad
<cr1901_modern> https://www.ebay.com/itm/Acorn-Archimedes-410-1-With-Keyboard-And-Mouse/313301587771 I'm not bidding, but this doesn't seem too terrible
<cr1901_modern> is it?
<m4t> that's reall clean
<m4t> really*
<cr1901_modern> What's that odd plug thing to the left :P?
<m4t> it's so you can plug it into your washer/oven outlet
<cr1901_modern> ... will it fit ._.?
<m4t> nah those are angled i guess
<m4t> so you need to use pliers first
<cr1901_modern> Ahhh right, thanks for the help :)!
<m4t> np
<andlabs> well that's a bit much for me for right now
<andlabs> but I'd probably just get a raspi 400 and RISC OS Open 5
<andlabs> as for this speccy...
<andlabs> $79.15
<andlabs> heh
<racoon> it's very weird to me that someone from the US would want a spectrum :)
<superctr__> timex sinclair :P
<cr1901_modern> is it "zee ex" or "zed ex"?
<superctr__> latter
<racoon> zee ex would be Weird
<cr1901_modern> it's how I've internally been pronouncing it :)
<racoon> it'd be like pronouncing "UK garage" ga-raj
<cr1901_modern> how do ppl in the UK pronounce garage then?
<racoon> garridge!
<cr1901_modern> ahhh... TIL

<racoon> i'm still not sure how i should say birmingham, alabam. i feel like there is no way for an english person to say it without it being weird
<racoon> *alabama
<racoon> fortunately it's never came up
<sorear> mm, alabam
<racoon> A key on this keyboard is stuck slightly
<racoon> a laptop keyboard in my posession never lasts more than a month
<whitequark> wow, a month
<whitequark> i thought i run through keyboards quickly
<racoon> well the last one lasted a year but two keycaps basically would not stay on any more
<racoon> then it needed replacing
<racoon> it got pretty bad
<racoon> it works perfectly for a month or so. :)
<whitequark> mine last maybe a year, i make sure to always keep at least one replacement keyboard on hand
<cr1901_modern> This is the third keyboard for my W520 in 10 years. The "A" key is always a good candidate to wear out.
<whitequark> it kinda makes sense to me though, xps13 keyboards are definitely not rated for like, being used for 12+ hours every single day
<whitequark> or the batteries. or... hm. actually other parts survive pretty well
<racoon> i lived a "nomadic lifestyle" (read: was homeless) with this laptop so it's lasted surprisingly well
<racoon> i am sure it is not meant for regularly building firefox with though, so it'll probably be very messed up by the end
<cr1901_modern> I did that once in 2015 on Net b/c "pkg_add" wasn't working. I'm kinda surprised the w520 tolerated it back then.
<racoon> i maintain the netbsd firefox-esr package on an x250
<racoon> it's fine, just gets very hot
<cr1901_modern> :)
<racoon> i hear some parts of this laptop is held together with sticky stuff
<racoon> including the screen
<racoon> which now wobbles around :) it is probably completely unstuck.
<racoon> in retrospect it was dumb not to get the i7 version, but back then this wasn't my only computer -.-
<andlabs> racoon: I'm only tempted because there's another american seling it
<racoon> ah, did they play jet set willy then regret their purchase :P
<andlabs> I do have a NIB/CIB Timex Sinclair 2068
<racoon> there are some great and impressive spectrum games, but i do think many of the most famous ones are terrible :P
<racoon> same for the bbc, many of the best games are obscure
<racoon> i think because they were released very late when the systems were very dying
<racoon> like, most bbc games didn't have music, never mind scrolling, then there's this... https://youtu.be/hjAWGauqTFg?t=96
<cr1901_modern> PSG soundtrack?
<racoon> yeh
<racoon> apparently
<racoon> had to look that up
<racoon> the 48k spectrum mostly makes farty noises
<racoon> the 128k is a bit better
<racoon> neither of these machines were designed for games at all
<racoon> clive thought people would be doing serious business with his machines
<racoon> he was a bit of a nutter
<cr1901_modern> heh
