<cr1901_modern> Foone: More laserdisc bullshit for your pleasure: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdmSlwcknC0
<cr1901_modern> Warning, contains harmful doses of 80s.
<Foone> as do i
<andlabs> my 3.5" drives (both internal and external) arrivd
<andlabs> let's hope both work
<ZrX-NoMs> Before the smoke
<andlabs> the external drive is detected by macOS but isn't being treated as a disk drive for some reason; let's try linux
<andlabs> Pietro Gagliardi, [05.11.20 15:20] well
<andlabs> Pietro Gagliardi, [05.11.20 15:20] shit
<andlabs> Pietro Gagliardi, [05.11.20 15:20] turns out what I thought were 1.44MB disks were really 720K disks
<andlabs> Pietro Gagliardi, [05.11.20 15:20] that would probably explain it
<andlabs> Pietro Gagliardi, [05.11.20 15:24] yeah that was it; gah
<andlabs> Pietro Gagliardi, [05.11.20 15:24] though now I know my existing sabrent external floppy drive indeed does not work
<Foone> interesting. sabrent drives tend to be pretty good in my experience
<m4t> there are a couple oem drives based on teac FD-05PUB which can be had pretty cheap. hp and dell rebranded them. i have the hp, but have not tested it with 720k even though they're said to support it.
<Foone> yeah. the FD-05PUB is my standard
<m4t> i got mine for $9.99 shipped on amazon. sadly that listing is now oos. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NYAW1QO/
<andlabs> m4t: yes, the IBM one I have is one of those
<andlabs> the USB identifier reveals its secret
<andlabs> *I have now
<andlabs> but theq uestion is do those realy not handle 720K disks?
<andlabs> Nerionaya implied to me that she has a USB floppy drive that does handle 720K disks
<m4t> "This drive reads 720Kb diskettes. Most do not.
<m4t> " from amazon review
<andlabs> weird
<andlabs> the IBM one doesn't
<andlabs> shrug
<andlabs> maybe it's not a PUB
<andlabs> but it is a TEAC FD-05
<m4t> https://www.officedepot.com/a/products/938345/Teac-Floppy-Drive-FD-05PUB-Floppy/ "It reads and writes 1.44MB Mac diskettes as well as 1.44MB and 720K PC diskettes, ensuring that your system can work with all your previous data."
<Foone> "most do not" seems to be a bit of an urban legend in my experience. I've done a lot of testing on USB drives, and in my experience I found zero that couldn't read 720k disks
<Foone> the only 720k-not-supporting thing I found was a weird USB-to-floppy-interface adapter
<andlabs> wait no it is a PUB
<andlabs> huh
<andlabs> IDK then
<andlabs> either way, that won't work for the 1.44MB disk images I was going to use it for writing
<andlabs> (for the PC-98)
