ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. <andlabs> nice
<andlabs> I bought a DEC puck mouse too
<andlabs> I still need to get a DEC keyboard and a scsi2sd
<andlabs> oh and a monitor adapter
<andlabs> I'm still frustrated that the newest versions of scsi2sd are no longer open hardware
<Foone> you just need a whole everything and it'll be complete!
<andlabs> =P
<andlabs> I have just the computer now
<andlabs> I'll also need the scsi2sd for the x68000
<andlabs> and possibly for my performa 600
<Foone> I agree on the SCSI2SD not being open, but I kinda understand why. I was at a VCF and one of the guys who made it was there, and we were having trouble with one. He looked at it and was like "oh. I didn't make that one... it's a clone"

<Foone> and apparently that's a very common situation: people asking him for support for a scsi2sd that's not working and it's not working because someone cloned it based on the open source design but cheaped out on components
<Foone> it sounds like there's a lot of SCSI2SD clones out there that will work on "most adapters", because they're in spec enough that if you plug them into a very compatible adapter they'll work fine, but won't work on a lot of the odder adapters
<Foone> and I think at the time my roommate was trying to use it on a minivax of some sort? which is apparently far enough outside of the "normal" SCSI to not work with the clones

<Sarayan> A little like us being asked to support all the butchered variants of mame
<Foone> exactly. the kind of shit that Mozilla was so annoyed with that resulted in IceWeasel existing
<andlabs> I mean I guess that's fair
<andlabs> it'd be nice if people who make, for instance, SD2IDEs would credit the original SD2IDE project more often
<andlabs> er
<andlabs> SD2IEC
<andlabs> and the scsi2sd guy does make it clear he's not getting credit in any of these clones
<andlabs> shrug
<andlabs> I'm just not a fan of anything that used to be open source but isn't anymore
<andlabs> even if in this case the firmware and drivers is still oepn source for some reason
