ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. andlabs: That record sounds pretty badass, ngl. Still horrifying tho XD

TIL that the casette port is TRS-80 compat
<Foone>
yeah. I got a cable for mine and it's just a TRS-80 cable
<cr1901_modern>
I guess IBM PC was about the cusp of where floppies became preferred storage medium. I can find decent docs for older standards like Tarbell (including schematics)
<cr1901_modern>
Tarbell is "cute"... it's slow enough that it uses a 555 time for synchronizing to the center of data rather than a PLL or delay line
<cr1901_modern>
or synchronous counter like the WD177x does
<whitequark>
nice
<andlabs>
I think the casette port was a de facto industry standard?

Pietro Gagliardi, [22.11.20 22:20] I love when I google a computer from a major manufacturer and all I get is one single video that I already know is bullshit that has no information and nothing but people selling aftermarket batteries
<andlabs>
Pietro Gagliardi, [22.11.20 22:20] no no one needs to know specs or anything like that, that's all fluff

Foone: When you're awake... I have a very strange request if you're willing to help me and you have a pair of digital calipers
<cr1901_modern>
(Whenever it's convenient for you)
<Sarayan>
What a teaser, something very strange by Foone's standards must be rather strange indeed
<cr1901_modern>
Idk if it's strange by Foone's standards. It is certainly a strange one for me to ask/care about, even among the vintage computing crap I do.
<cr1901_modern>
Anyways, I have an IBM 5150 and IBM 5170 set up. I have no plans to sell them, but in general, I like to keep my really vintage machines in about the same condition as I got them.
<cr1901_modern>
For many years, I've run both machines deliberately without the chassis screws in them to easily be able to get to the innards. I saved the original screws in an effort to keep them in the condition I got both machines.
<cr1901_modern>
Galaxy-brain me can't figure out which chassis screws belong to which machine, other than the washers for 4/10 of them are different sizes from the other 6/10
<cr1901_modern>
So if someone else measures the washer diameter of their 5150, I can possibly eliminate which screws belong to which machine. In the meantime, I guessed :P
<cr1901_modern>
If I were smart, I would've put the screws into different containers/bags based on machine. But 9 years ago me was an idiot.
