ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. Channel logs: https://freenode.irclog.whitequark.org/~h~yamahasynths
<andlabs> it's been years since I have used it but 'barbeque' on github claims it still doens't work
<andlabs> it just doesn't open files
<andlabs> also oh I guess there's https://linux.die.net/man/8/floppy
<KitsuWhooa> Where can I get a file?
<KitsuWhooa> Apparently looking for any random hdm file on google doesn't work
<KitsuWhooa> or the web archive
<andlabs> ...which is not on my system
* KitsuWhooa shrugs
<andlabs> also ah I guess fdutils's superformat can do it
<andlabs> format a: /a:1024 /t:77 /n:8 /u
<andlabs> well I can't find anything about an /a option for format
<andlabs> and /t is number of tracks and /n is number of sectors
<andlabs> but IDK how that translates to CHS
<andlabs> the defaults for a 1.44MB disk are /t:80 /n:9 because 80*9*2(for 2HD) == 1440
<andlabs> so I guess 1024 is the sector size
<andlabs> ...track count is cylinders * heads
<andlabs> wait that would mean 77 cylinders and 2 heads, dur
<TD-Linux> I use linux with a usb floppy drive and it is quite easy with ufiformat, I would recommend that
<andlabs> oh that doesn't work with usb floppy drives
<andlabs> and yes ufiformat is the right tool
<andlabs> and yep 1232 is right there woo
<andlabs> oh cool it's hanging at the end
<andlabs> wait no it worked
<andlabs> dd can't write the image but cat seems to be able to, huh
<andlabs> hahahaha well this disk image works so far but the FM channels are broken lol
<andlabs> oh it was the SOUND BIOS setting in the BIOS
<andlabs> wait no it's still broken
<andlabs> and this other sound setting turns off the FM entirely; hmmm
<andlabs> let me try turning the CPU down to 8mhz
<andlabs> otherwise I'll try another game later
<andlabs> yeah no huh
<Lord_Nightmare> does anyone have an fm77 around?
<Lord_Nightmare> we need redumps of all the roms
<Lord_Nightmare> honestly any sort of japanese pc with a kanji ROM in it needs said ROM redumped
<Lord_Nightmare> many emulators just used their own hand-drawn kanji roms and they ended up mistakenly assumed to be the real ones
<Lord_Nightmare> an interesting kanji ROM card i'd never known about (I think foone found this) is the mac II one
<Lord_Nightmare> which maps the kanji ROM to nubus space
<andlabs> well I could dump the ROMs from my PC-98 laptop if I knew how
<Lord_Nightmare> i think at least some of the roms are mapped to cpuspace
<Lord_Nightmare> the kanji roms might not be
<andlabs> fun
<fseidel> Lord_Nightmare: RE FM77: contact Soji, tell him I sent you: http://ysflight.in.coocan.jp/main/e2020.html
<fseidel> he's an FM-series enthusiast and would probably be happy to help
<fseidel> I don't know if he has the original FM77, but he's got an FM7 and FM77AV
<andlabs> does he also have an FM-X
<andlabs> surprised Ys Flight SImulator is not an actual Ys flight simulator, more surprised it took a while to figure that out
<fseidel> unlikely, he's only ever mentioned the "Fujitsu original" ones to me
<fseidel> and none of the MSX/PC clones
<fseidel> just the FM7/Towns machines
<Lord_Nightmare> fseidel: I will pass that along

<ugla> https://kodamo.org/essencefm.php that looks like one heck of an FM box
<andlabs> well the FM-X was their only MSX machine and it was released concurrently with the original FM-7
<andlabs> I do wonder what led to decision to choose one over the other
<andlabs> *released concurrently with AND advertised together with
<andlabs> ugla: and priced to boot x.x
<andlabs> also out of stock :<
<ugla> Yes. I don't have that kind of money, but it seems cool. I guess it's a small operation.
<cr1901_modern> . o O (Do I need 300 voices?)
<ugla> It's also multipart as heck it seems :)
<cr1901_modern> 24-32 voices should be enough for anybody
<ugla> Thinking of the DX1 with its layered patches, and then playing that polyphonically, and then having many such tracks. It quicky adds up.
<ugla> I guess you wouldn't have to worry about note stealing

<ugla> Four note chord on DX1 would be 8 voices. Then double that to avoid note stealing with long decay. Then have many tracks.

<andlabs> so yeah from last night
<andlabs> [20:29:41] <andlabs>hmm
<andlabs> [20:29:55] <andlabs>madou monogatari 1 has broken FM sound on the PC-486NOTEAS
<andlabs> [20:30:02] <andlabs>I wonder why
<andlabs> [10:20:38] <andlabs>I tried slowing the CPU down and that didn't help
<andlabs> [10:20:54] <andlabs>plus writing to the SSG channels works fine
<Sarayan> cr1901: A mu100 listens to two midi ports, with 16 channels each, and some instruments use two samples at the same time
<Sarayan> 32 is weak :-)
<cr1901_modern> . o O (At what point do you have so many channels that you can't hear any single one, but you can hear the sum of all channels just fine?)
<cr1901_modern> Like the weak law of large numbers, but for audio
<Sarayan> There's this little thing your may have heard about called an "orchestra"
<Sarayan> you should look it up :-P
<cr1901_modern> I can still hear when e.g. a single flute is playing
<cr1901_modern> But yes, I appreciate where you're going w/ that. I just wonder mathematically how many different channels you'd have to put into an audio file before mixing all of them to prevent clipping means that no single one of them is audible by the human ear
<Sarayan> I suspect it really depends on whether there's frequency separation
<Sarayan> e.g. you can hear the flute solo over the group of violins, but can't really separate the violins

<ugla> In a live setting, having lots of voices could be handy, if it would let you run two songs at the same time, and bring tracks in and out as you transition between them
<cr1901_modern> hmmm
<ugla> Looking at a Reface DX instead which I could at least conceivably afford used
<Stilett0> any of you guys know a ranma42? he (or she) is looking at visually decoding the decap of SB16 DSP 4.05: https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?p=910592#p910592
<cr1901_modern> Cannot say I recognize them
<Sarayan> Don't we have 4.05 already?
